Green-Schwarz Formulation of Self-Dual Superstring
The self-dual superstring has been described previously in a
Neveu-Schwarz-Ramond formulation with local N=2 or 4 world-sheet supersymmetry.
We present a Green-Schwarz-type formulation, with manifest spacetime

Subcritical Superstrings
We introduce the Liouville mode into the Green-Schwarz superstring. Like
massive supersymmetry without central charges, there is no kappa symmetry.
However, the second-class constraints (and corresponding Wess-Zumino term)
remain, and can be solved by (twisted) chiral superspace in dimensions D=4 and
6. The matter conformal anomaly is c = 4-D < 1. It thus can be canceled for
physical dimensions by the usual Liouville methods, unlike the bosonic string

The Vector-Tensor Supermultiplet with Gauged Central Charge
The vector-tensor multiplet is coupled off-shell to an N=2 vector multiplet
such that its central charge transformations are realized locally. A gauged
central charge is a necessary prerequisite for a coupling to supergravity and
the strategy underlying our construction uses the potential for such a coupling
as a guiding principle. The results for the action and transformation rules
take a nonlinear form and necessarily include a Chern-Simons term. After a
duality transformation the action is encoded in a homogeneous holomorphic

Proximity Effects in Radiative Transfer
Though the dependence of near-field radiative transfer on the gap between two
planar objects is well understood, that between curved objects is still
unclear. We show, based on the analysis of the surface polariton mediated
radiative transfer between two spheres of equal radii and minimum gap ,
that the near--field radiative transfer scales as as
and as for larger values of up to the far--field limit. We
propose a modified form of the proximity approximation to predict near--field
radiative transfer between curved objects from simulations of radiative

Principles, Practices, and Social Movements
Consider two current controversies in American law and politics: the first is whether the expansion of copyright, trademark, and other forms of intellectual property conflicts with the free speech principle; the second is whether government collection and use of racial data (in the census or in law enforcement) violates the antidiscrimination principle. What do these controversies have in common? Both involve constitutional challenges that call into question the legitimacy of existing practices. More importantly, these examples teach us something about how constitutional principles operate. In each case, controversy arises as people apply a longstanding principle to a longstanding practice—a practice that heretofore has not been understood to be implicated by the principle. People exercise creativity by applying the principles to these previously uncontroversial practices, and as they do, they can reshape the meaning of both the principle and the practice
The American Civil Rights Tradition: Anticlassification or Antisubordination?
With the publication of Groups and the Equal Protection Clause, Owen Fiss inaugurated the antisubordination tradition in legal scholarship of the Second Reconstruction. Antisubordination theorists contend that guarantees of equal citizenship cannot be realized under conditions of pervasive social stratification and argue that law should reform institutions and practices that enforce the secondary social status of historically oppressed groups. As elaborated by Fiss and subsequent proponents, including Catharine MacKinnon, Charles Lawrence, Derrick Bell, Laurence Tribe, and Kenneth Karst, this principle is variously called the antisubordination principle, the antisubjugation principle, the equal citizenship principle, or the anticaste principle. The latter expression evokes the famous statement of John Marshall Harlan in Plessy v. Ferguson that there is no caste in the United States, as well statements made by framers of the Fourteenth Amendment that the amendment was designed to prohibit “class legislation” and practices that reduce groups to the position of a lower or disfavored caste. Fiss called his version of the antisubordination approach the “group disadvantaging principle” and he defined it as the principle that laws may not “aggravate” or “perpetuate” “the subordinate status of a specially disadvantaged group.
Tourism as a Sustainable Rural Development Strategy: Building Consensus in Resident Attitudes
A survey of community leaders, broadly categorized as business people, public officials, and conservationists, was conducted to assess attitudes toward tourism in a six-county region of the Southern Appalachian Highlands of Tennessee and North Carolina. Broad support for tourism development was found across all groups, with the caveat that economic growth not take place at the expense of community character or environmental quality. In general, however, members of conservation organizations were more concerned about the negative impacts of tourism development than were business people or public officials. The methodology employed highlights issues of agreement and conflict among influential community groups. This approach can help communities engage in a consensus-building process and plan a sustainable tourism-based development strategy that is acceptable to all groups
Self-Dual N=8 Supergravity as Closed N=2(4) Strings
As open N=2 or 4 strings describe self-dual N=4 super Yang-Mills in 2+2
dimensions, the corresponding closed (heterotic) strings describe self-dual
ungauged (gauged) N=8 supergravity. These theories are conveniently formulated
in a chiral superspace with general supercoordinate and local OSp(8|2) gauge
invariances. The super-light-cone and covariant-component actions are analyzed.
Because only half the Lorentz group is gauged, the gravity field equation is
