Totem: a case study in HEP
It is being proved that the neurochip \Totem{} is a viable solution for high
quality and real time computational tasks in HEP, including event
classification, triggering and signal processing. The architecture of the chip
is based on a "derivative free" algorithm called Reactive Tabu Search (RTS),
highly performing even for low precision weights. ISA, VME or PCI boards
integrate the chip as a coprocessor in a host computer. This paper presents: 1)
the state of the art and the next evolution of the design of \Totem{}; 2) its
ability in the Higgs search at LHC as an example.Comment: Latex, elsart.sty, 5 pages, talk presented by I.Lazzizzera at CHEP97

A survey on knowledge and perceptions regarding head lice on a sample of teachers and students in primary schools of north and south of Italy
High rates of pediculosis are found in every part of the world. The age-range most affected is between 3 and 12 years. No-nit policies are ineffective in preventing infestations. On the other hand, misdiagnosis and overuse of pediculicides, increase resistance to treatment. Lack of information leads people to consider this kind of infestation to be associated to low social classes and immigrants. This research has been implemented to find out about the information level on pediculosis on a sample of students (722) and teachers (408) of some primary schools in northern and southern Italy, and to highlight the role of personal aspects such as age, gender, cultural level, geographical position which may influence this topic and, eventually, allow the use of the correct knowledge in developing appropriate procedures within
the school district. Data was obtained through a questionnaire containing 21 multiple choice questions for the teachers and 14 for the students. Standard descriptive statistics were computed. ?2 tests were applied to highlight statistical association among observed variables; test for the difference of two proportions were applied to confirm significant differences among the observed proportions.
The level of information for students seems to be, approximately, the same both for northern and southern Italy. There was a slight prevalence of correct answers from southern teachers, probably because the phenomenon of pediculosis has a positive trend of growth in the south. The number of correct answers was, for all, on average about 60.0%; a negative result in itself, considering the simplicity of the questions. Knowledge about the biology of the louse was virtually absent. The area of prevention showed lack of information and need for improvement. Most of the teachers believe that there are specific products that can prevent infestation by louse. Most of the teachers have information which does not come from scientific sources. Students receive some short and incomplete information from their parents. Deficiencies in teachers? knowledge indicate that they are inadequately equipped to manage lice infestation. Educational interventions with teachers and families and, as a consequence, with students should be taught at school to allow a correct understanding of the pediculosis, increasing the teachers? competence and, consequently, as soon as the infestation should manifest, a rapid alert of the Health Service so that proper treatment could be provided
Tutti giù per terra (all fall down) – An active course to discover earthquakes topics
Teaching topics involving risk and safety, and earthquake, requires a full involvement. Otherwise,
it can be useless. A full involvement means an experience rewarding the person in his/her
integrity, starting from practice to go beyond it, understanding phaenomena not using science as a
form of rational believe, working on the different ingenuous idea that everyone has of the
earthquake, staying related to the social connections of the learning group. ConUnGioco
developed, starting from these objectives, "Tutti giù per terra", an active course for discover, for
the Italian INGV: the course, whose title is inspired to the last line ("All fall down", in italian,
"Tutti giù per terra") of the child singing game "Ring a ring'o roses" (in Italian: girotondo), is
based on an interactive and participative approach. Following the active course, partecipants can
experiment feeling and emotions related to the experience of an earthquake (through simulation
tools). Therefore, starting from the questions that the simulated experience raised in everyone, the
group will search its own answers, investigating theorical knowledges with scientific experiments
and games, staying in touch with explanations coming from legends, history and religion. The
course will end in the area of concrete actions and possible reactions to an earthquake, talking
about preventions and solutions, individually and as a community
Searching the Higgs with the Neurochip TOTEM
We show that neural network classifiers can be helpful in discriminating
Higgs production events from the huge background at LHC, assuming the case of a
mass value GeV. We use the high performance neurochip TOTEM,
trained by the Reactive Tabu Search algorithm (RTS), which could be used for
on-line purposes. Two different sets of input variables are compared.Comment: 4 pages,1 figure, requres espcrc2.sty and epsfig.sty. Work prsented

Could the use of bedside lung ultrasound reduce the number of chest x-rays in the intensive care unit?
Background: Lung ultrasound can be used as an alternative to chest radiography (CXR) for the diagnosis and follow-up of various lung diseases in the intensive care unit (ICU). Our aim was to evaluate the influence that introducing a routine daily use of lung ultrasound in critically ill patients may have on the number of CXRs and as a consequence, on medical costs and radiation exposure. Methods: Data were collected by conducting a retrospective evaluation of the medical records of adult patients who needed thoracic imaging and were admitted to our academic polyvalent ICU. We compared the number of CXRs and relative costs before and after the introduction of lung ultrasound in our ICU. Results: A total of 4134 medical records were collected from January 2010 to December 2014. We divided our population into two groups, before (Group A, 1869 patients) and after (Group B, 2265 patients) the introduction of a routine use of LUS in July 2012. Group A performed a higher number of CXRs compared to Group B (1810 vs 961, P = 0.012), at an average of 0.97 vs 0.42 exams per patient. The estimated reduction of costs between Groups A and B obtained after the introduction of LUS, was 57%. No statistically significant difference between the outcome parameters of the two groups was observed. Conclusions: Lung ultrasound was effective in reducing the number of CXRs and relative medical costs and radiation exposure in ICU, without affecting patient outcome

Clinical impact of HSV-1 detection in the lower respiratory tract from hospitalized adult patients
AbstractThe occurrence and clinical impact of herpes simplex virus (HSV) were evaluated in 342 bronchoalveolar lavage specimens from 237 patients. HSV-1 and HSV-2 were detected in 32.1% and <1% of patients, respectively. A significant difference of HSV-1 prevalence and load was found in relation to admission to intensive care unit, mechanical ventilation and mortality within 28 days; in particular, a viral load ≥105 copies/mL bronchoalveolar lavage fluid was significantly associated with critical features. No association was found with immune status or other characteristics. Nine of 21 (42.9%) cases of ventilator-associated pneumonia were positive for HSV-1, with poor outcome in six
