Uniform materials and the multiplicative decomposition of the deformation gradient in finite elasto-plasticity
In this work we analyze the relation between the multiplicative decomposition
of the deformation gradient as a product
of the elastic and plastic factors and the theory of uniform materials. We
prove that postulating such a decomposition is equivalent to having a uniform
material model with two configurations - total and the inelastic
. We introduce strain tensors characterizing different types of
evolutions of the material and discuss the form of the internal energy and that
of the dissipative potential. The evolution equations are obtained for the
configurations and the material metric .
Finally the dissipative inequality for the materials of this type is
presented. It is shown that the conditions of positivity of the internal
dissipation terms related to the processes of plastic and metric evolution
provide the anisotropic yield criteria

Internal variables and phenomenological models for metals plasticity
This paper aims towards a presentation of the general structure of the phenomenological models presently used for the macroscopic description of metal plasticity and a discussion of their interaction with microstructural investigation. Attention is concentrated on internal variables modelization which, from the very beginning, must include some ideas about the microstructural material state. After a presentation of the basic mechanical and thermodynamical framework, the classical models will be described through the usual internal variables, the associated thermodynamic forces and the microstructural features they are supposed to take into account. Some approaches will then be presented to give a deeper microstructural content to these models. A distinction will be made between micromechanical approaches and qualitative use of microstructural informations. This methodological discussion will be illustrated by some recent works and models, and concluded by some examples showing the necessity to combine these two approaches. The concept of internal stress will also be discussed. As a conclusion the need for an increasing interaction between the mechanics and physics of materials will be advocated.L'objectif de cette présentation est de dégager la structure générale des modèles phénoménologiques habituellement utilisés pour la description macroscopique du comportement plastique des métaux.
Second gradient vs. surface energy in the Asaro-Grinfeld instability
This paper study an instability phenomenon that arise in epitaxial growth of single crystals with lattice mismatch. We compare a classical approach, based on the competition between the bulk and surface energies, with a non-standard one when the surface term is replaced by a term including the second gradient of the displacement field. We evidence how secontl order gradients may stabilize lower modes of corrugated boundaries, via an intrisic length scale
Welding operations on steels are accompanied by thermal, metallurgical and mechanical phenomena. These phenomena inevitably induce internal stress fields which can be the key factor for the determination of the mechanical properties of the material under concern, particularly its fatigue life. Our work deals principally with a mechanical phenomenon which is induced by metallurgy, namely the Transformation Induced Plasticity (TRIP). The effect of classical plasticity on TRIP is analyzed considering the martensitic transformation of 16MND5 steel, for which experimental investigations have shown that TRIP can be due exclusively to the hardening of the austenitic phase. The experimental results are not easily explainable if one considers models taken from the literature. Hence, the objective of this work is to contribute to a better understanding of the mechanisms involved in the observed phenomenon of interaction between classical plasticity and TRIP. For this purpose, a Finite Element micromechanical approach has been adopted. First steps have consisted in improving a numerical modeling presented in the literature. The numerical results have shown that great attention should be paid to the choice of numerical parameters, the scale of the modeling and the choice of the thermodynamical criterion that controls the transformation. Keywords: transformation induced plasticity; martensitic transformation; ferrous alloy; modelin
