National Economic Strategy in a Sluggish World Setting

This article is presented before the 19th Annual Meeting of the Philippine Economic Society at the Manila Hotel on December 11, 1982. Examination of the Philippine strategy for development during the 1970s has indicated a success that is relatively short-lived; hence, it is necessary to emphasize the importance of the links between the short-run strategies to long-term policies.competition, development program, economic reform

Filipinx/a/o-American College Students and Mental Health

Filipinx/a/o-Americans are the second largest Asian American population yet are often underrepresented in research studies and media, while predominantly East Asians remain the center focus. Issues and experiences of subpopulations within minority groups are often overshadowed by the dominant group and essentially erased. Therefore, disaggregating data persists as an important way to understand the differences between subgroups and to ultimately create effective strategies to remediate these inequities. This current study looks to further examine the research question: What experiences shape Filipinx/a/o-American college students’ mental health? Specifically how does family, religion, immigration, racial stereotypes (e.g., model minority myth), and acculturation at a PWI (predominantly white institution) contribute to their mental health? Due to the limited amount of research on the topic of Filipinx/a/o- Americans and mental health, this research aims to fill the gap of disaggregated data as well as incorporate more methods of Community Based Participatory Research (CBPR)

A historical and current perspective of Philippine economic problems

    Get PDF
The ar.ticle analyzes the problems confronting the Philippine economy and offers an explanation of the reasons and events that led to the current economic crisis in the Philippines. After the author makes the necessary discounts for national political events and time role played by the international economy and other external factors, he focuses on the role played by the market mechanism in the history of the Philippine economy. Much of the problems, according to the author, resulted from a cumulation of situations in which interventions in the market system made the economy less efficient. Deviations from the price mechanism as the prime element of solving essentially market problems aggravated national problems rather than lessened them. The author contends that the most glaring of these deviations was the unrealistic exchange rate policy adopted by government through the years. Consequently, with tile worsening of some problems, the ability of time government to cope with other more basic duties was adversely affected. Sicat cites two major components for recovery in the future: (a) restoration of credit lines and foreign exchange inflows through the sheer economics of readjustment; and (b) restoration of confidence in the Philippine economy. The latter is not only economic; it is essentially governed by political factors

Physical Model and Mesoscale Simulation of Mortar and Concrete Deformations under Freeze–Thaw Cycles

    Get PDF
The degradation of concrete material under multiple freeze–thaw cycles is an important issue for structures in cold and wet regions. This paper proposed a physical and mechanical model to explain the deformation behavior observed in previous experiments, from internal pressure calculation to mesoscale simulation, and for both closed and open freeze–thaw tests. Three kinds of internal pressures are considered in this study: hydraulic pressure due to ice volume expansion, crystallization pressure, and cryosuction pressure due to liquid–ice interface. The hydraulic pressure model combines Power’s model with poromechanical theories, which can well explain the reverse phenomenon (from expansion to contraction) observed in the closed test. The total internal pressure will be applied in a discrete numerical method (Rigid Body Spring Model) to simulate the deformation during each cycle, as well as the unrecoverable cracking (residual strain) at the end of each cycle. The constitutive laws are also modified considering the features of those internal pressures. Finally, the deformation behaviors of mortar, mortar–aggregate interface (closed test, 30 cycles), and the concrete (open test, 300 cycles) are simulated and compared with experiment measurements, which are found in a satisfactory agreement
