    Crowdsourcing Approach for Evaluation of Privacy Filters in Video Surveillance

    Extensive adoption of video surveillance, affecting many aspects of the daily life, alarms the concerned public about the increasing invasion into personal privacy. To address these concerns, many tools have been proposed for protection of personal privacy in image and video. However, little is understood regarding the effectiveness of such tools and especially their impact on the underlying surveillance tasks. In this paper, we propose conducting a subjective evaluation using crowdsourcing to analyze the tradeoff between the preservation of privacy offered by these tools and the intelligibility of activities under video surveillance. As an example, the proposed method is used to compare several commonly employed privacy protection techniques, such as blurring, pixelization, and masking applied to indoor surveillance video. Facebook based crowdsourcing application was specifically developed to gather the subjective evaluation data. Based on more than one hundred participants, the evaluation results demonstrate that the pixelization filter provides the best performance in terms of balance between privacy protection and intelligibility. The results obtained with crowdsourcing application were compared with results of previous work using more conventional subjective tests showing that they are highly correlated

    Assessment of disaster preparedness and related impact factors among emergency nurses in tertiary hospitals: descriptive cross-sectional study from Henan Province of China

    BackgroundThe aim of this study was to investigate the current state of disaster preparedness and to determine associated factors among emergency nurses from tertiary hospitals in Henan Province of China.MethodsThis multicenter descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted with emergency nurses from 48 tertiary hospitals in Henan Province of China between September 7, 2022–September 27, 2022. Data were collected through a self-designeds online questionnaire using the mainland China version of the Disaster Preparedness Evaluation Tool (DPET-MC). Descriptive analysis and multiple linear regression analysis were used to evaluate disaster preparedness and to determine factors affecting disaster preparedness, respectively.ResultsA total of 265 emergency nurses in this study displayed a moderate level of disaster preparedness with a mean item score of 4.24 out 6.0 on the DPET-MC questionnaire. Among the five dimensions of the DPET-MC, the mean item score for pre-disaster awareness was highest (5.17 ± 0.77), while that for disaster management (3.68 ± 1.36) was the lowest. Female gender (B = −9.638, p = 0.046) and married status (B = −8.618, p = 0.038) were negatively correlated with the levels of disaster preparedness. Five factors positively correlated with the levels of disaster preparedness included having attended in the theoretical knowledge training of disaster nursing since work (B = 8.937, p = 0.043), having experienced the disaster response (B = 8.280, p = 0.036), having participated in the disaster rescue simulation exercise (B = 8.929, p = 0.039), having participated in the disaster relief training (B = 11.515, p = 0.025), as well as having participated in the training of disaster nursing specialist nurse (B = 16.101, p = 0.002). The explanatory power of these factors was 26.5%.ConclusionEmergency nurses in Henan Province of China need more education in all areas of disaster preparedness, especially disaster management, which needs to be incorporated into nursing education, including formal and ongoing education. Besides, blended learning approach with simulation-based training and disaster nursing specialist nurse training should be considered as novel ways to improve disaster preparedness for emergency nurses in mainland China

    MODMA dataset: a Multi-modal Open Dataset for Mental-disorder Analysis

    According to the World Health Organization, the number of mental disorder patients, especially depression patients, has grown rapidly and become a leading contributor to the global burden of disease. However, the present common practice of depression diagnosis is based on interviews and clinical scales carried out by doctors, which is not only labor-consuming but also time-consuming. One important reason is due to the lack of physiological indicators for mental disorders. With the rising of tools such as data mining and artificial intelligence, using physiological data to explore new possible physiological indicators of mental disorder and creating new applications for mental disorder diagnosis has become a new research hot topic. However, good quality physiological data for mental disorder patients are hard to acquire. We present a multi-modal open dataset for mental-disorder analysis. The dataset includes EEG and audio data from clinically depressed patients and matching normal controls. All our patients were carefully diagnosed and selected by professional psychiatrists in hospitals. The EEG dataset includes not only data collected using traditional 128-electrodes mounted elastic cap, but also a novel wearable 3-electrode EEG collector for pervasive applications. The 128-electrodes EEG signals of 53 subjects were recorded as both in resting state and under stimulation; the 3-electrode EEG signals of 55 subjects were recorded in resting state; the audio data of 52 subjects were recorded during interviewing, reading, and picture description. We encourage other researchers in the field to use it for testing their methods of mental-disorder analysis

    Robust estimation of bacterial cell count from optical density

    Optical density (OD) is widely used to estimate the density of cells in liquid culture, but cannot be compared between instruments without a standardized calibration protocol and is challenging to relate to actual cell count. We address this with an interlaboratory study comparing three simple, low-cost, and highly accessible OD calibration protocols across 244 laboratories, applied to eight strains of constitutive GFP-expressing E. coli. Based on our results, we recommend calibrating OD to estimated cell count using serial dilution of silica microspheres, which produces highly precise calibration (95.5% of residuals <1.2-fold), is easily assessed for quality control, also assesses instrument effective linear range, and can be combined with fluorescence calibration to obtain units of Molecules of Equivalent Fluorescein (MEFL) per cell, allowing direct comparison and data fusion with flow cytometry measurements: in our study, fluorescence per cell measurements showed only a 1.07-fold mean difference between plate reader and flow cytometry data

    Carbohydrates have always attracted large interests in their synthesis and applications. Due to their diversified roles, they have been employed in many synthetic methodologies as well as building blocks of numerous natural products. The different roles of carbohydrates and successful examples of their applications would be demonstrated. Part 1: In the first part, pyrrolidine derivatives were constructed in high diastereoselectivities and good yields through a [3 + 2] cycloaddition of a tert-butyldimethylsilyl protected carbohydrate allene with a range of imines. Following which, the carbohydrate auxiliary was removed and pyrrolidines were afforded with excellent enantioselectivities of up to 99% ee. The potential of this strategy was further demonstrated by the selective reduction of the pyrrolidines. Part 2: In the second part, carbohydrate-integrated isoxazolines were synthesized from 2-nitroglycals and sulfur ylides in the presence of 1-phenylthiourea catalyst. The reactions underwent [4 + 1] annulations and rearrangement to afford the corresponding carbohydrate-integrated isoxazolines in high yields with excellent diastereoselectivities of up to 95% de. Part 3: In the final chapter, protected dimycolyl-diarabino-glycerol (purified from Mycobacterium marinum) was successfully synthesized by using Mitsunobu reaction and selective arabinofuranosylation. This glycolipid was found to stimulate a pro-inflammatory response in macrophages and investigation of this cell wall glycoconjugate in driving host-pathogen interactions and contributing to the immunopathogenesis of mycobacterial infections is currently underway.DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY (SPMS

    Image Denoising via Improved Dictionary Learning with Global Structure and Local Similarity Preservations

    We proposed a new efficient image denoising scheme, which leads to four important contributions. The first is to integrate both reconstruction and learning based approaches into a single model so that we are able to benefit advantages from both approaches simultaneously. The second is to handle both multiplicative and additive noise removal problems. The third is that the proposed approach introduces a sparse term to reduce non-Gaussian outliers from multiplicative noise and uses a Laplacian Schatten norm to capture the global structure information. In addition, the image is represented by preserving the intrinsic local similarity via a sparse coding method, which allows our model to incorporate both global and local information from the image. Finally, we propose a new method that combines Method of Optimal Directions (MOD) with Approximate K-SVD (AK-SVD) for dictionary learning. Extensive experimental results show that the proposed scheme is competitive against some of the state-of-the-art denoising algorithms
