A high resolution semiconductor detector for applications in space

Nuclear radiation detectors with volumes of approximately 1 cu cm was fabricated from single crystals of germanium-silicon alloy containing as much as 20 weight percent germanium. The properties of these detectors were investigated and will be discussed. Tests reveal that the gamma ray photoelectric peak efficiency of an alloy detector with only 12 weight percent germanium is approximately 4 times that of a silicon detector of equal volume. The room temperature roomure appears to be a good possibility. Storage for long periods at room temperature does not seem to adversely affect these devices. The results of preliminary radiation damage experiments suggest that the alloy detectors possess a radiation damage resistance far greater than that of silicon

New Project Knowledge Management: Lessons Learned from temporary structures of Public Sector R&D Organisations

R&D Organisations are key players in the knowledge economy and make major contributions to Australia’s efforts to achieve and maintain competitive advantage. The explicit purpose of R&D organisations is to develop new knowledge and apply existing knowledge in new ways. Much of the R&D is carried out in temporary structures or project teams. Drawing upon theory and grounded in case based evidence, this paper explores how new forms of project management affect knowledge generating and application processes in R&D organisations. It appears that much of the knowledge generation and application occurs through taking advantage of almost naturally occurring oscillations between open and closed system practices over the course of projects. Theoretical and practical lessons and implications for further research are advanced

The contrast produced from a photographic transparency is controlled by placing the transparency between a pair of partially reflecting mirrors forming walls of an optical cavity. Mirrors trap a collimated laser beam illuminating the transparency so that at least a portion of the beam energy is passed through the transparency plural times. The distance that the light beam travels between the mirrors is controlled as a function of the wavelength of the beam energy to control the phase of light interference in the beam passing through the transparency, thereby controlling the intensity of the beam derived from the mirror downstream of the transparency

A unified framework for generalized multicategories

Notions of generalized multicategory have been defined in numerous contexts throughout the literature, and include such diverse examples as symmetric multicategories, globular operads, Lawvere theories, and topological spaces. In each case, generalized multicategories are defined as the "lax algebras" or "Kleisli monoids" relative to a "monad" on a bicategory. However, the meanings of these words differ from author to author, as do the specific bicategories considered. We propose a unified framework: by working with monads on double categories and related structures (rather than bicategories), one can define generalized multicategories in a way that unifies all previous examples, while at the same time simplifying and clarifying much of the theory.Comment: 76 pages; final version, to appear in TA
