Food safety news events classification via a hierarchical transformer model

    Get PDF
In light of the significance of regulatory authorities and the rising demand for information disclosure, a vast amount of information on food safety news reports is readily accessible on the Internet. The extraction of such information for precise classification and provision of appropriate safety alerts based on their respective categories has emerged as a challenging problem for academic research. Given that most food safety-related events in news reports comprise lengthy text, the pre-trained language models currently employed for text analysis are generally limited in their capability to handle long documents. This paper proposes a long-text classification model utilising hierarchical Transformers. We categorise information in long documents into two distinct types: (1) multiple text chunks meeting the length constraint and (2) essential sentences within long documents, such as headings, paragraph start and end sentences, etc. Initially, our proposed model utilises the text chunks as input to the BERT model. Then, it concatenates the output of the BERT model with the important sentences from the document and use them as input to the Transformer model for feature transformation. Finally, we utilise a classifier for food safety news classification. We conducted several comparative experiments with various commonly used text classification models on a dataset constructed from publicly available information on food regulatory websites. Our proposed method outperforms existing methods, establishing itself as the leading approach in terms of performance. [Abstract copyright: © 2023 The Author(s).

Quantification of Multiple Climate Change and Human Activity Impact Factors on Flood Regimes in the Pearl River Delta of China

Coastal flood regimes have been irreversibly altered by both climate change and human activities. This paper aims to quantify the impacts of multiple factors on delta flood. The Pearl River Delta (PRD), with dense river network and population, is one of the most developed coastal areas in China. The recorded extreme water level (m.s.l.) in flood season has been heavily interfered with by varied income flood flow, sea-level rise, and dredged riverbeds. A methodology, composed of a numerical model and the index R, has been developed to quantify the impacts of these driving factors in the the PRD. Results show that the flood level varied 4.29%–53.49% from the change of fluvial discharge, 3.35%–38.73% from riverbed dredging, and 0.12%–16.81% from sea-level rise. The variation of flood flow apparently takes the most effect and sea-level rise the least. In particular, dense river network intensifies the impact of income flood change and sea-level rise. Findings from this study help understand the causes of the the PRD flood regimes and provide theoretical support for flood protection in the delta region

Dephosphorization of hot metal using rare earth oxide-containing slags

An innovative rare earth oxide-containing slag for hot metal dephosphorization was proposed, and the factors influencing the efficiency during the dephosphorization of hot metal using rare earth oxide-containing slags were also studied. An increase in the temperature up to 1,550°C is beneficial to the dephosphorization process, and the maximum degree of dephosphorization for slags containing 6 wt% rare earth oxides is 44.49%; further temperature increases would deteriorate the efficiency, and the degree of dephosphorization decreases to 37.38% at 1,600°C. An increase in the basicity of slags up to 3.0, and the rare earth oxide content up to 6 wt%, improves the dephosphorization efficiency; further increase in the basicity and rare earth oxide content, the efficiency has almost no change. It was also found that an increase in the quantity of slags is beneficial to the dephosphorization reaction

Effect of adding yttrium on precipitation behaviors of inclusions in E690 ultra high strength offshore platform steel

    No full text
The mechanism of inclusions precipitation of the E690 offshore platform steel, with and without addition of yttrium, was studied using the thermodynamic calculation method. The results show that in the E690 steel in the absence of yttrium, the MnS inclusions were precipitated in the liquid phase at the solidification front. By adding the yttrium, MnS inclusions were replaced by spindle and spherical yttrium-containing oxide and sulfide complex inclusions, and the precipitation sequence of yttrium-containing inclusions in the liquid steel was Y2O3, Y2O2S, and YS. However, Y2S3 inclusions cannot be precipitated in the liquid steel under the experimental conditions. It was also found that Al2O3 inclusions can be formed in the liquid steel with and without addition of yttrium. The thermodynamic calculation results are in accordance with the experimental results

Joint extraction of wheat germplasm information entity relationship based on deep character and word fusion

Abstract The verified text data of wheat varieties is an important component of wheat germplasm information. To automatically obtain a structured description of the phenotypic and genetic characteristics of wheat varieties, the aim at solve the issues of fuzzy entity boundaries and overlapping relationships in unstructured wheat variety approval data, WGIE-DCWF (joint extraction model of wheat germplasm information entity relationship based on deep character and word fusion) was proposed. The encoding layer of the model deeply fused word semantic information and character information using the Transformer encoder of BERT. This allowed for the cascading fusion of contextual semantic feature information to achieve rich character vector representation and improve the recognition ability of entity features. The triple extraction layer of the model established a cascading pointer network, extracted the head entity, extracted the tail entity according to the relationship category, and decoded the output triplet. This approach improved the model’s capability to extract overlapping relationships. The experimental results demonstrated that the WGIE-DCWF model performed exceptionally well on both the WGD (wheat germplasm dataset) and the public dataset DuIE. The WGIE-DCWF model not only achieved high performance on the evaluation datasets but also demonstrated good generalization. This provided valuable technical support for the construction of a wheat germplasm information knowledge base and is of great significance for wheat breeding, genetic research, cultivation management, and agricultural production

Modern science and technology is a weapon against natural disasters. Shenzhen is a city of technology and innovation and we should endeavor to address flood control, drought relief and wind mitigation (named “three-prevention” in this context). In particular, we should vigorously promote the improvement of technology, and make use of modern information technologies such as big data, internet of things, cloud computing and artificial intelligence to create intelligent three-prevention system. This paper described in detail the characteristics and the construction status of the intelligent three-prevention system as well as the future development direction, in order to achieve the construction goals of the overall situation probing of the three-prevention, real-time decision-making assistance, flat command and control and urban resilience development. Since the intelligent three-prevention system’s launch in April 2020, it has started more than 20 times of emergency response against typhoon and flood. The whole process functions of front-end intelligent perception, fine dynamic simulation, real-time forecast and early warning, emergency command and post-disaster assessment have been preliminarily realized

The improvement of aircraft engine performance resulted in the highly demand of drilling micron-sized holes (. Moreover, there is no obvious heat-affected zone (HAZ), recast layer or micro-cracks on the hole surface and wall. In conclusion, the two-step approach is an effective hole processing method that provides the possibility of high-efficiency and high-quality machining of film cooling holes.11Nsciescopu
