Quantifying primary and secondary humic-like substances in urban aerosol based on emission source characterization and a source-oriented air quality model
Humic-like substances (HULIS) are a mixture of high-molecular-weight,
water-soluble organic compounds that are widely distributed in atmospheric
aerosol. Their sources are rarely studied quantitatively. Biomass burning is
generally accepted as a major primary source of ambient humic-like substances
(HULIS) with additional secondary material formed in the atmosphere. However,
the present study provides direct evidence that residential coal burning is
also a significant source of ambient HULIS, especially in the heating season
in northern China based on source measurements, ambient sampling and
analysis, and apportionment with source-oriented CMAQ modeling. Emission
tests show that residential coal combustion produces 5 % to 24 % of the
emitted organic carbon (OC) as HULIS carbon (HULISc). Estimation of primary
emissions of HULIS in Beijing indicated that residential biofuel and coal
burning contribute about 70 % and 25 % of annual primary HULIS,
respectively. Vehicle exhaust, industry, and power plant contributions are
negligible. The average concentration of ambient HULIS in PM2.5 was
7.5 µg m−3
in urban Beijing and HULIS exhibited obvious seasonal variations
with the highest concentrations in winter. HULISc accounts for 7.2 % of
PM2.5 mass, 24.5 % of OC, and 59.5 % of water-soluble organic carbon. HULIS
are found to correlate well with K+, Cl−, sulfate, and
secondary organic aerosol, suggesting its sources include biomass burning,
coal combustion, and secondary aerosol formation. Source apportionment based
on CMAQ modeling shows residential biofuel and coal burning and secondary
formation are important sources of ambient HULIS, contributing 47.1 %,
15.1 %, and 38.9 %, respectively.</p
A unique distant submillimeter galaxy with an X-ray-obscured radio-luminous active galactic nucleus
We present a multiwavelength study of an atypical submillimeter galaxy in the
GOODS-North field, with the aim to understand its physical properties of
stellar and dust emission, as well as the central AGN activity. Although it is
shown that the source is likely an extremely dusty galaxy at high redshift, its
exact position of submillimeter emission is unknown. With the new NOEMA
interferometric imaging, we confirm that the source is a unique dusty galaxy.
It has no obvious counterpart in the optical and even NIR images observed with
HST at lambda~<1.4um. Photometric-redshift analyses from both stellar and dust
SED suggest it to likely be at z~>4, though a lower redshift at z~>3.1 cannot
be fully ruled out (at 90% confidence interval). Explaining its unusual
optical-to-NIR properties requires an old stellar population (~0.67 Gyr),
coexisting with a very dusty ongoing starburst component. The latter is
contributing to the FIR emission, with its rest-frame UV and optical light
being largely obscured along our line of sight. If the observed fluxes at the
rest-frame optical/NIR wavelengths were mainly contributed by old stars, a
total stellar mass of ~3.5x10^11Msun would be obtained. An X-ray spectral
analysis suggests that this galaxy harbors a heavily obscured AGN with
N_H=3.3x10^23 cm^-2 and an intrinsic 2-10 keV luminosity of L_X~2.6x10^44
erg/s, which places this object among distant type 2 quasars. The radio
emission of the source is extremely bright, which is an order of magnitude
higher than the star-formation-powered emission, making it one of the most
distant radio-luminous dusty galaxies. The combined characteristics of the
galaxy suggest that the source appears to have been caught in a rare but
critical transition stage in the evolution of submillimeter galaxies, where we
are witnessing the birth of a young AGN and possibly the earliest stage of its
jet formation and feedback.Comment: 13 pages in printer format, 10 figures, 1 table, accepted for

Dynamic Evolution Model of Isothermal Voids and Shocks
We explore self-similar hydrodynamic evolution of central voids embedded in
an isothermal gas of spherical symmetry under the self-gravity. More
specifically, we study voids expanding at constant radial speeds in an
isothermal gas and construct all types of possible void solutions without or
with shocks in surrounding envelopes. We examine properties of void boundaries
and outer envelopes. Voids without shocks are all bounded by overdense shells
and either inflows or outflows in the outer envelope may occur. These
solutions, referred to as type void solutions, are further
divided into subtypes and
according to their characteristic behaviours across the sonic critical line
(SCL). Void solutions with shocks in envelopes are referred to as type
voids and can have both dense and quasi-smooth edges.
Asymptotically, outflows, breezes, inflows, accretions and static outer
envelopes may all surround such type voids. Both cases of
constant and varying temperatures across isothermal shock fronts are analyzed;
they are referred to as types and
void shock solutions. We apply the `phase net matching procedure' to construct
various self-similar void solutions. We also present analysis on void
generation mechanisms and describe several astrophysical applications. By
including self-gravity, gas pressure and shocks, our isothermal self-similar
void (ISSV) model is adaptable to various astrophysical systems such as
planetary nebulae, hot bubbles and superbubbles in the interstellar medium as
well as supernova remnants.Comment: 24 pages, 13 figuers, accepted by ApS
The 13N(d,n)14O Reaction and the Astrophysical 13N(p,g)14O Reaction Rate
N()O is one of the key reactions in the hot CNO cycle
which occurs at stellar temperatures around 0.1. Up to now, some
uncertainties still exist for the direct capture component in this reaction,
thus an independent measurement is of importance. In present work, the angular
distribution of the N()O reaction at = 8.9
MeV has been measured in inverse kinematics, for the first time. Based on the
distorted wave Born approximation (DWBA) analysis, the nuclear asymptotic
normalization coefficient (ANC), , for the ground state of
O N + is derived to be fm. The
N()O reaction is analyzed with the R-matrix approach,
its astrophysical S-factors and reaction rates at energies of astrophysical
relevance are then determined with the ANC. The implications of the present
reaction rates on the evolution of novae are then discussed with the reaction
network calculations.Comment: 17 pages and 8 figure

Fluid and Diffusion Limits for Bike Sharing Systems
Bike sharing systems have rapidly developed around the world, and they are
served as a promising strategy to improve urban traffic congestion and to
decrease polluting gas emissions. So far performance analysis of bike sharing
systems always exists many difficulties and challenges under some more general
factors. In this paper, a more general large-scale bike sharing system is
discussed by means of heavy traffic approximation of multiclass closed queueing
networks with non-exponential factors. Based on this, the fluid scaled
equations and the diffusion scaled equations are established by means of the
numbers of bikes both at the stations and on the roads, respectively.
Furthermore, the scaling processes for the numbers of bikes both at the
stations and on the roads are proved to converge in distribution to a
semimartingale reflecting Brownian motion (SRBM) in a -dimensional box,
and also the fluid and diffusion limit theorems are obtained. Furthermore,
performance analysis of the bike sharing system is provided. Thus the results
and methodology of this paper provide new highlight in the study of more
general large-scale bike sharing systems.Comment: 34 pages, 1 figure
