    The X-ray Nature of Nucleus in Seyfert 2 Galaxy NGC 7590

    We present the result of the Chandra high-resolution observation of the Seyfert~2 galaxy NGC 7590. This object was reported to show no X-ray absorption in the low-spatial resolution ASCA data. The XMM observations show that the X-ray emission of NGC 7590 is dominated by an off-nuclear ultra-luminous X-ray source (ULX) and an extended emission from the host galaxy, and the nucleus is rather weak, likely hosting a Compton-thick AGN. Our recent Chandra observation of NGC 7590 enables to remove the X-ray contamination from the ULX and the extended component effectively. The nuclear source remains undetected at ~4x10^{-15} erg/s/cm^-2 flux level. Although not detected, Chandra data gives a 2--10 keV flux upper limit of ~6.1x10^{-15} erg/s/cm^-2 (at 3 sigma level), a factor of 3 less than the XMM value, strongly supporting the Compton-thick nature of the nucleus. In addition, we detected five off-nuclear X-ray point sources within the galaxy D25 ellipse, all with 2 -- 10 keV luminosity above 2x10^{38} erg/s (assuming the distance of NGC 7590). Particularly, the ULX previously identified by ROSAT data was resolved by Chandra into two distinct X-ray sources.     JUMPS IN DIFFERENT LEVELS OF WATER: AN OPTIMAL ENVIRONMENT TO JUMP ON LAND

    The purpose of this study was to compare rate of force development (RFD) and rate of impact force (RIF) among on-land and in different levels of water jumps. Fourteen male participants were recruited in this study. Participants carried out the testing on land first and followed by testing in knee-high (LOW), trochanter major high (MID), and nasal-high (HIGH) of water. In each condition, participants performed 3 countermovement jumps (CMJ) separated by 15 sec rest. RFD and RIF were calculated. A repeated measure ANOVA was used for assessing the differences of variables among different conditions. The results showed that RFD for LOW is significantly lower than the others, and loading impact on-land is significantly higher than the others. Jumping in MID and HIGH are optimal levels of water for jumps training

    Autonomic Dysfunction Because of Severe Tetanus in an Unvaccinated Child

    Tetanus is rare in a country with a national vaccination program. When it does occur, the associated autonomic dysfunction is a challenge for physicians. We report here a case of an unvaccinated 5-year-old boy who suffered from tetanus complicated by autonomic dysfunction, which was successfully controlled by the infusion of magnesium sulfate. This is the first case that demonstrated the therapeutic effect of magnesium sulfate in a child with tetanus. This case highlights the importance of implementing a vaccination program

    The study of Seyfert 2 galaxies with and without infrared broad lines

    From the literature, we construct from literature a sample of 25 Seyfert 2 galaxies (S2s) with a broad line region detected in near infrared spectroscopy and 29 with NIR BLR which was detected. We find no significant difference between the nuclei luminosity (extinction-corrected [OIII]~5007) and infrared color f60/f25\rm{f_{60}/f_{25}} between the two populations, suggesting that the non-detections of NIR BLR could not be due to low AGN luminosity or contamination from the host galaxy. As expected, we find significantly lower X-ray obscurations in Seyfert 2s with NIR BLR detection, supporting the unification scheme. However, such a scheme was challenged by the detection of NIR BLR in heavily X-ray obscured sources, especially in six of them with Compton-thick X-ray obscuration. The discrepancy could be solved by the clumpy torus model and we propose a toy model demonstrating that IR-thin X-ray-thick S2s could be viewed at intermediate inclinations, and compared with those IR-thick X-ray-thick S2s. We note that two of the IR-thin X-ray-thick S2s (NGC 1386 and NGC 7674) experienced X-ray transitions, i.e. from Compton-thin to Compton-thick appearance or vice versa based on previous X-ray observations, suggesting that X-ray transitions could be common in this special class of objects

    Identification of novel DNA methylation inhibitors via a two-component reporter gene system

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Targeting abnormal DNA methylation represents a therapeutically relevant strategy for cancer treatment as demonstrated by the US Food and Drug Administration approval of the DNA methyltransferase inhibitors azacytidine and 5-aza-2'-deoxycytidine for the treatment of myelodysplastic syndromes. But their use is associated with increased incidences of bone marrow suppression. Alternatively, procainamide has emerged as a potential DNA demethylating agent for clinical translation. While procainamide is much safer than 5-aza-2'-deoxycytidine, it requires high concentrations to be effective in DNA demethylation in suppressing cancer cell growth. Thus, our laboratories have embarked on the pharmacological exploitation of procainamide to develop potent DNA methylation inhibitors through lead optimization.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We report the use of a DNA methylation two-component enhanced green fluorescent protein reporter system as a screening platform to identify novel DNA methylation inhibitors from a compound library containing procainamide derivatives.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>A lead agent IM25, which exhibits substantially higher potency in <it>GSTp1 </it>DNA demethylation with lower cytotoxicity in MCF7 cells relative to procainamide and 5-aza-2'-deoxycytidine, was identified by the screening platform.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Our data provide a proof-of-concept that procainamide could be pharmacologically exploited to develop novel DNA methylation inhibitors, of which the translational potential in cancer therapy/prevention is currently under investigation.</p
