    Pore Structure and Pore Solution in Alkali Activated Fly Ash Geopolymer Concrete and Its Effect on ASR of Aggregates with Wide Silicate Contents

    Alkali silica reaction (ASR) is detrimental to concrete. It is a time-dependent phenomenon, which can lead to strength loss, cracking, volume expansion, and premature failure of concrete structures. In essence, it is a particular chemical reaction involving alkali hydroxides and reactive form of silica present within the concrete mix. Geopolymer is a type of alkaline activated binder synthesized through polycondensation reaction of geopolymeric precursor and alkali polysilicates. In this thesis, three types of reactive aggregates with different chemical compositions were used. Systematic laboratory experiments and microstructural analysis were carried out for the geopolymer concrete and the OPC concrete made with the same aggregates. The result suggests that the extent of ASR reaction due to the presence of three reactive aggregates in geopolymer concrete is substantially lower than that in OPC based concrete, which is explained by the pore solution change and verified through their microstructural variations and FTIR images

    Benefits of Low Carbon Development Strategies in Emerging Cities of Developing Country: A Case of Kathmandu

    Kathmandu is one of the fastest growing cities in South Asia facing various challenges related to climate change, local pollutants emissions and energy security of supply. This study analysed the greenhouse gas mitigation potential in different economic sectors of the city by using Long-range Energy Planning (LEAP) frame work. It shows that the effect of implementing various low carbon development strategy options can reduce 35.2% of total greenhouse gas emission from energy use as compared to the base case scenario in 2030. This indicates the need for exploring the possibility of utilizing the global climate funds and adopting voluntary mechanisms for greenhouse gas mitigation. The estimated demand side technology investment cost of low carbon measures for different sectors ranges from less than USD 1/tonne CO2e for residential sector to USD 99/tonne CO2e for transport sector. The low carbon options also results co-benefits in terms of significant reduction in emission of local pollutants and improvement of energy security. As Government of Nepal has envisioned following low carbon economic development path on the long run, there is the need of establishment of regulatory framework, institutional framework and development of clear action plans for realizing the implementation of low carbon development strategy measures in the country

    Formulation and Comparative in-vitro Evaluation of Mucoadhesive Buccal Tablets of Furosemide

    This study was conducted to develop mucoadhesive buccal tablet of Frusemide. A Mucoadhesive buccal tablet of Frusemide were prepared by using wet granulation method using dfferent polymer such as HPMC k 100, Carbopol-940 in different ratio. Tablets were analysed by measuring different parameters thickness, hardness weight uniformity, drug content uniformity, LOD, sweeling index, invitro dissolution study and solubility. The tablets were evaluated for in vitro release in pH 6.8-phosphate buffer for 12 hr in standard dissolution apparatus. Mucoadhesion strength was increased with increase in the concentration of carbopol. In order to determine the mode of release, the data was subjected to Zero order, first order, Higuchi and Peppas diffusion model

    Patient journey during and after a pre-eclampsia-complicated pregnancy:a cross-sectional patient registry study

    OBJECTIVES: To gain insight into the patient journey through a pre-eclampsia-complicated pregnancy. DESIGN: Cross-sectional patient registry study. SETTING: Online patient registry initiated by the Preeclampsia Foundation. PARTICIPANTS: Women with a history of pre-eclampsia enrolled in The Preeclampsia Registry (TPR). PRIMARY AND SECONDARY OUTCOME MEASURES: Retrospective patient-reported experience measures concerning awareness of pre-eclampsia, timing and type of information on pre-eclampsia received, involvement in decision making regarding medical care, mental/emotional impact of the pre-eclampsia-complicated pregnancy and impact on future pregnancy planning. RESULTS: Of 3618 TPR-participants invited to complete the Patient Journey questionnaire, data from 833 (23%) responders were available for analysis. Most responders were white (n=795, 95.4%) and lived in the USA (n=728, 87.4%). Before their pre-eclampsia diagnosis, 599 (73.9%) responders were aware of the term ‘pre-eclampsia’, but only 348 (43.7%) were aware of its associated symptoms. Women with a lower level of education were less likely to have heard of pre-eclampsia (OR 0.36, 95% CI 0.21 to 0.62). Around the time of diagnosis, 29.2% of responders did not feel involved in the decision making, which was associated with reporting a serious mental/emotional impact of the pre-eclampsia experience (OR 2.46, 95% CI 1.58 to 3.84). Over time, there was an increase in the proportion of women who were aware of the symptoms of pre-eclampsia (32.2% before 2011 to 52.5% after 2016; p<0.001) and in the proportion of responders stating they received counselling about the later-life health risks associated with pre-eclampsia (14.2% before 2011 to 25.6% after 2016; p=0.005). CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrates that improved patient education regarding pre-eclampsia is needed, that shared decision making is of great importance to patients to enhance their healthcare experience, and that healthcare providers should make efforts to routinely incorporate counselling about the later-life health risks associated with pre-eclampsia.     Zinc and provitamin A biofortified maize genotypes exhibited potent to reduce hidden-hunger in Nepal

    Zinc deficiency affects one third of the population worldwide, and vitamin A deficiency is a prevalent public health issue in Sub-Saharan Africa and South-Asia, including Nepal. Crop biofortification is the sustainable solution to these health—related problems, thus we conducted two different field trials in an alpha lattice design to identify zinc and provitamin A biofortified maize genotypes consistent and competitive in performance over the contrasting seasons (Season 1: 18 February to 6 July 2020 and Season 2: 31 August to 1 February, 2020/21). In our study, the performance of introduced maize genotypes (zinc—15 and provitamin A biofortified—24) were compared with that of the local check, focusing on the overall agro-morphology, yield attributes, yield, and kernel zinc and total carotenoid content. Zinc and total carotenoid in the tested genotypes were found in the range between 14.2 and 24.8 mg kg−1 and between 1.8 and 3.6 mg 100 g−1. Genotypes A1831-8 from zinc and EEPVAH-46 from provitamin A biofortified maize trial recorded kernel zinc and total carotenoid as high as 52.3, and 79.5%, respectively, compared to the local check (DMH849). The provitamin A genotypes EEPVAH-46 and EEPVAH-51 (total carotenoid: 3.6 and 3.3 mg 100 g−1), and zinc biofortified genotypes A1847-10 and A1803-42 (20.4 and 22.4 mg kg−1 zinc) were identified as superior genotypes based on their yield consistency over the environments and higher provitamin A and zinc content compared to the check. In addition, farmers can explore August sowing to harvest green cobs during December-January to boost up the emerging green cob business

    Determinants of agriculture biodiversity in Western Terai landscape complex of Nepal

    The study explored agriculture biodiversity around protected areas and identified factors affecting diversity of agriculture biodiversity in farming households. The study analyzed the data collected from household survey of about 907 farmers from Western-Terai Landscape Complex of Nepal. Intra-species and inter-species richness and evenness in agriculture landscape were estimated and compared across a spectrum of land-uses. The study identified different social, economic, technological and ecological factors affecting the richness of intra-species and inter-species diversity of agriculture biodiversity using generalized linear regression models. Technology index, information index, food security, animal holding, ethnicity, irrigation facility and land-use were found as major variables affecting agriculture. The results also indicated that buffer zones had higher diversity than other land-uses, indicating positive effects of protected-land on surrounding agriculture biodiversity. Results supported need of coordinated efforts to mainstream agriculture biodiversity conservation with landscape conservation plans and socio-economic developments of the region
