    The purpose of this paper is to present a comparative analysis of the business education programs offered by Auburn University's College of Business, Alabama, U.S.A. and Faculty of Business Administration, Academy of Economic Studies, Bucharest Romania. This comparative analysis is conceived in a larger perspective of the two different cultures and traditions in developing business education programs.     Fit and Organizational Turnaround: An Examination of the Performance Implications of Strategy Content and Process Fit and Strategy and Cause of Decline Fit.

    Generally, extant turnaround research has been inductively based and has limited its conceptualization of strategy to strategy content. This study builds on past research by incorporating strategy process and theoretically deriving the causes of decline. In general terms, this study posits that fit (consistency) between strategy process and content is critical to an organization\u27s ability to recover from poor performance. Specifically, the following are considered consistent responses: (1) an entrepreneurial strategy with decentralized decision making and expanded information usage; and, (2) an efficiency strategy with centralized decision making and constricted information usage. Additionally, organizations need to fit their strategy to the cause of decline to have superior turnaround performance. This study examined the implications of strategy content/process fit and strategy/cause of decline fit in the hospital industry. Specifically, archival data for the years 1987-1994 was collected for the 131 Columbia/HCA hospitals identified as in decline during 1988-1991. Primary data was collected via questionnaire from 66 of these hospitals. Confirmatory factor analysis was used to assess the reliability, variance extracted, and discriminant validity of the measures collected by survey. Moderated multiple regression failed to support the positive performance implications of either type of fit. Potential explanations for the lack of support for the positive performance implications of fit were offered. These explanations include: (1) the choice of strategy is not crucial to turnaround performance; (2) the two types of fit are necessary but not sufficient for enhanced performance; (3) turnaround processes are too idiosyncratic to generalize; and, (4) a conceptualization of fit other than the one posited in this study is more appropriate. The limitations of this study include the number of respondents per organization, limited statistical power, limited generalizability of results, untested feedback loops, and potential retrospective and survival biases. This study concludes with suggestions for future research. These suggestions involve the role of the environment, organizational resources, and other strategy processes in organizational turnaround

    Small Business Manager Scanning Emphases and the Dominant Logic of the Business-level Strategy

    Normative prescription dictates that the pursuit of a business-level strategy can be best achieved when strategic decision makers focus their attention on those functions and activities most relevant to that particular strategy (Porter, 1980; 1985). We examine two elemental research questions for strategic management: 1) what is the connection, if any, between business-level strategies and the sectors managers scan most in their external environments; and 2) are business-level strategies associated with specific internal firm characteristics and capabilities managers attend to most? We evaluate these questions using a field survey in which small business managers identify differences in the external environmental sectors and internal firm attributes they scan most when pursuing different strategies. Results demonstrate some connections between the strategy being pursued and external and internal scanning emphases. Importantly, we conclude that this "scanning connection" should not be taken for granted and we offer suggestions for how managers should be deliberate about their scanning behavior

    Organizational culture and effectiveness: A study of values, attitudes, and organizational outcomes

    a b s t r a c t a r t i c l e i n f o Organizational culture is defined as a set of beliefs, values, and assumptions that are shared by members of an organization (Schein, 1985). These underlying values have an influence on the behavior of organizational members, as people rely on these values to guide their decisions and behaviors (Schein, 1985). Extrapolating from the influence culture has on the behavior of organizational members, much has been written about the impact of culture on an organization's effectiveness (e.g., Schein, 1985, Quinn, 1988. While the extant research is promising, more empirical evidence of the manner in which organizational culture impacts effectiveness is warranted. Previous research has explored the direct relationships between specific culture domains and specific effectiveness measures (e.g., Quinn and Spreitzer, 1991; Cameron and Freeman, 1991; Denison and Mishra, 1995; Denison, 1990). The purpose of this research is to delve deeper into the relationship between organizational culture and organizational effectiveness by exploring both direct and indirect effects. Siehl and Martin (1990) suggested that culture influences employee attitudes and that those attitudes, in turn, impact organizational effectiveness. We offer an empirical examination of this assertion by testing the mediating effect of employee satisfaction on the culture-effectiveness relationship. Frazier et al. (2004) describe mediating variables as constructs that "establish 'how' or 'why' one variable predicts or causes and outcome variable" (p. 116). Although the relationship between culture and effectiveness is relatively well established in the literature, "how" and "why" this relationship exists has not been adequately addressed. This manuscript attempts to begin to fill that void by exploring employee attitudes as one possible explanatory mechanism through which an organization's culture comes to impact its performance

    Differences in adolescent activity and dietary behaviors across home, school, and other locations warrant location-specific intervention approaches

    Background Investigation of physical activity and dietary behaviors across locations can inform “setting-specific” health behavior interventions and improve understanding of contextual vulnerabilities to poor health. This study examined how physical activity, sedentary time, and dietary behaviors differed across home, school, and other locations in young adolescents. Methods Participants were adolescents aged 12–16 years from the Baltimore-Washington, DC and the Seattle areas from a larger cross-sectional study. Participants (n = 472) wore an accelerometer and Global Positioning Systems (GPS) tracker (Mean days = 5.12, SD = 1.62) to collect location-based physical activity and sedentary data. Participants (n = 789) completed 24-h dietary recalls to assess dietary behaviors and eating locations. Spatial analyses were performed to classify daily physical activity, sedentary time patterns, and dietary behaviors by location, categorized as home, school, and “other” locations. Results Adolescents were least physically active at home (2.5 min/hour of wear time) and school (2.9 min/hour of wear time) compared to “other” locations (5.9 min/hour of wear time). Participants spent a slightly greater proportion of wear time in sedentary time when at school (41 min/hour of wear time) than at home (39 min/hour of wear time), and time in bouts lasting ≥30 min (10 min/hour of wear time) and mean sedentary bout duration (5 min) were highest at school. About 61% of daily energy intake occurred at home, 25% at school, and 14% at “other” locations. Proportionately to energy intake, daily added sugar intake (5 g/100 kcal), fruits and vegetables (0.16 servings/100 kcal), high calorie beverages (0.09 beverages/100 kcal), whole grains (0.04 servings/100 kcal), grams of fiber (0.65 g/100 kcal), and calories of fat (33 kcal/100 kcal) and saturated fat (12 kcal/100 kcal) consumed were nutritionally least favorable at “other” locations. Daily sweet and savory snacks consumed was highest at school (0.14 snacks/100 kcal). Conclusions Adolescents’ health behaviors differed based on the location/environment they were in. Although dietary behaviors were generally more favorable in the home and school locations, physical activity was generally low and sedentary time was higher in these locations. Health behavior interventions that address the multiple locations in which adolescents spend time and use location-specific behavior change strategies should be explored to optimize health behaviors in each location

    Fibrocytes and the tissue niche in lung repair

    Human fibrocytes are bone marrow-derived mesenchymal progenitor cells that express a variety of markers related to leukocytes, hematopoietic stem cells and a diverse set of fibroblast phenotypes. Fibrocytes can be recruited from the circulation to the tissue where they further can differentiate and proliferate into various mesenchymal cell types depending on the tissue niche. This local tissue niche is important because it modulates the fibrocytes and coordinates their role in tissue behaviour and repair. However, plasticity of a niche may be co-opted in chronic airway diseases such as asthma, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis and obliterative bronchiolitis. This review will therefore focus on a possible role of fibrocytes in pathological tissue repair processes in those diseases

    Summary and synthesis of Changing Cold Regions Network (CCRN) research in the interior of western Canada – Part 2: Future change in cryosphere, vegetation, and hydrology

    CCRN from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) through their Climate Change and Atmospheric Research (CCAR) programPeer ReviewedThe interior of western Canada, like many similar cold mid- to high-latitude regions worldwide, is undergoing extensive and rapid climate and environmental change, which may accelerate in the coming decades. Understanding and predicting changes in coupled climate–land– hydrological systems are crucial to society yet limited by lack of understanding of changes in cold-region process responses and interactions, along with their representation in most current-generation land-surface and hydrological models. It is essential to consider the underlying processes and base predictive models on the proper physics, especially under conditions of non-stationarity where the past is no longer a reliable guide to the future and system trajectories can be unexpected. These challenges were forefront in the recently completed Changing Cold Regions Network (CCRN), which assembled and focused a wide range of multi-disciplinary expertise to improve the understanding, diagnosis, and prediction of change over the cold interior of western Canada. CCRN advanced knowledge of fundamental cold-region ecological and hydrological processes through observation and experimentation across a network of highly instrumented research basins and other sites. Significant efforts were made to improve the functionality and process representation, based on this improved understanding, within the fine-scale Cold Regions Hydrological Modelling (CRHM) platform and the large-scale Modélisation Environmentale Communautaire (MEC) – Surface and Hydrology (MESH) model. These models were, and continue to be, applied under past and projected future climates and under current and expected future land and vegetation cover configurations to diagnose historical change and predict possible future hydrological responses. This second of two articles synthesizes the nature and understanding of cold-region processes and Earth system responses to future climate, as advanced by CCRN. These include changing precipitation and moisture feedbacks to the atmosphere; altered snow regimes, changing balance of snowfall and rainfall, and glacier loss; vegetation responses to climate and the loss of ecosystem resilience to wildfire and disturbance; thawing permafrost and its influence on landscapes and hydrology; groundwater storage and cycling and its connections to surface water; and stream and river discharge as influenced by the various drivers of hydrological change. Collective insights, expert elicitation, and model application are used to provide a synthesis of this change over the CCRN region for the late 21st century

    DYX1C1 is required for axonemal dynein assembly and ciliary motility

    DYX1C1 has been associated with dyslexia and neuronal migration in the developing neocortex. Unexpectedly, we found that deleting exons 2–4 of Dyx1c1 in mice caused a phenotype resembling primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD), a disorder characterized by chronic airway disease, laterality defects and male infertility. This phenotype was confirmed independently in mice with a Dyx1c1 c.T2A start-codon mutation recovered from an N-ethyl-N-nitrosourea (ENU) mutagenesis screen. Morpholinos targeting dyx1c1 in zebrafish also caused laterality and ciliary motility defects. In humans, we identified recessive loss-of-function DYX1C1 mutations in 12 individuals with PCD. Ultrastructural and immunofluorescence analyses of DYX1C1-mutant motile cilia in mice and humans showed disruptions of outer and inner dynein arms (ODAs and IDAs, respectively). DYX1C1 localizes to the cytoplasm of respiratory epithelial cells, its interactome is enriched for molecular chaperones, and it interacts with the cytoplasmic ODA and IDA assembly factor DNAAF2 (KTU). Thus, we propose that DYX1C1 is a newly identified dynein axonemal assembly factor (DNAAF4)
