Objective : Between 1961 and 1971 the US military used over 80 million litres of herbicides in southern Vietnam. This study aims to assess hormone levels in the saliva of lactating Vietnamese mothers and human health effects in a dioxin hot spot (Phu Cat district, Binh Dinh province) and a non-exposed (Kim Bang district, Ha Nam province) area in Vietnam. Materials and Methods : An epidemiological study was carried out in both areas. The subjects were 58 lactating females in the hot spot area and 53 lactating females in the non-exposed area. All were aged between 20 and 30 years with infants aged between 4 and 16 weeks. Information about disease risk factors was obtained through interviews with mothers. Breastmilk samples were taken from all subjects, whereas saliva samples were obtained from 41 mothers in the hot spot area and 19 in the non-exposed area. Body measurements for both mothers and their infants were compared between the two areas. Result and Discussion : The weight and chest circumference of infants in the hot spot area were significantly lower than those in the non-exposed area, whereas age (weeks) is also significantly younger in hot spot area than non-exposed area. Present maternal and family diseases in the hot spot area were significantly higher than those in the non-exposed area. Maternal eyesight in both eyes did not differ significantly between the two areas. The cortisone levels in saliva have been found to be closely related to those in breast milk samples of both mothers in hot spot and non-exposed areas. No significant difference was found between salivary hormone levels of mothers in the hot spot and non-exposed areas

An IFN-γ-IL-18 Signaling Loop Accelerates Memory CD8+ T Cell Proliferation

Rapid proliferation is one of the important features of memory CD8+ T cells, ensuring rapid clearance of reinfection. Although several cytokines such as IL-15 and IL-7 regulate relatively slow homeostatic proliferation of memory T cells during the maintenance phase, it is unknown how memory T cells can proliferate more quickly than naïve T cells upon antigen stimulation. To examine antigen-specific CD8+ T cell proliferation in recall responses in vivo, we targeted a model antigen, ovalbumin(OVA), to DEC-205+ dendritic cells (DCs) with a CD40 maturation stimulus. This led to the induction of functional memory CD8+ T cells, which showed rapid proliferation and multiple cytokine production (IFN-γ, IL-2, TNF-α) during the secondary challenge to DC-targeted antigen. Upon antigen-presentation, IL-18, an IFN-γ-inducing factor, accumulated at the DC:T cell synapse. Surprisingly, IFN-γ receptors were required to augment IL-18 production from DCs. Mice genetically deficient for IL-18 or IFN-γ-receptor 1 also showed delayed expansion of memory CD8+ T cells in vivo. These results indicate that a positive regulatory loop involving IFN-γ and IL-18 signaling contributes to the accelerated memory CD8+ T cell proliferation during a recall response to antigen presented by DCs

First Sagittarius A* Event Horizon Telescope results. II. EHT and multiwavelength observations, data processing, and calibration

We present Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) 1.3 mm measurements of the radio source located at the position of the supermassive black hole Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*), collected during the 2017 April 5–11 campaign. The observations were carried out with eight facilities at six locations across the globe. Novel calibration methods are employed to account for Sgr A*'s flux variability. The majority of the 1.3 mm emission arises from horizon scales, where intrinsic structural source variability is detected on timescales of minutes to hours. The effects of interstellar scattering on the image and its variability are found to be subdominant to intrinsic source structure. The calibrated visibility amplitudes, particularly the locations of the visibility minima, are broadly consistent with a blurred ring with a diameter of ∼50 μas, as determined in later works in this series. Contemporaneous multiwavelength monitoring of Sgr A* was performed at 22, 43, and 86 GHz and at near-infrared and X-ray wavelengths. Several X-ray flares from Sgr A* are detected by Chandra, one at low significance jointly with Swift on 2017 April 7 and the other at higher significance jointly with NuSTAR on 2017 April 11. The brighter April 11 flare is not observed simultaneously by the EHT but is followed by a significant increase in millimeter flux variability immediately after the X-ray outburst, indicating a likely connection in the emission physics near the event horizon. We compare Sgr A*'s broadband flux during the EHT campaign to its historical spectral energy distribution and find that both the quiescent emission and flare emission are consistent with its long-term behavior.http://iopscience.iop.org/2041-8205Physic

Two new flavonoids, bakuisoflavone (1) and bakuflavanone (2), together with 15 known compounds, were isolated from the fruits of Psoralea corylifolia, and their structures were characterized by spectroscopic data. The effects of the isolated compounds on methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus were also examined. We found that two compounds, isobavachalcone (10) and bakuchiol (12), showed noticeable antibacterial effects on the MRSA strains examined. Quantitation of the major constituents, including anti-MRSA constituents, was then performed. The results showed individual contents of 1.26%–16.49% (w/w) among the examined compounds in the ethyl acetate extract from P. corylifolia fruits

Liposarcoma of the uterine corpus: A case report and literature review

Liposarcoma of the uterine corpus is extremely rare. We performed a laparotomy on a 55-year-old woman with the complaints of abdominal distension and genital bleeding who was found to have a uterine tumor, 17 × 16 cm in diameter. The preoperative diagnosis was a lipoma or lipoleiomyoma of the uterine corpus. However, pathological examination revealed proliferation of mature adipocytes and lipoblast-like atypical cells with small, weakly pleomorphic nuclei and foamy or vacuolated cytoplasm present within a fibrous septum. Immunohistochemistry showed that the tumor cells were focally positive for mouse double minute 2 homolog (MDM2). The final pathological diagnosis was a well-differentiated liposarcoma of International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) stage IB (pT1bNxM0). On magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), T1 -weighted and fat-saturated images showed high and low intensity in the tumor, respectively, suggesting that this tumor contained a fat component. The septum inside the tumor had a contrast enhancement on T1-weighted, gadolinium-enhanced imaging. The septum was nonuniformly thickened and partially nodular. In hindsight, these findings may have suggested a well-differentiated liposarcoma in the uterine corpus rather than a lipoma or lipoleiomyoma. Clinicians should be aware of the possibility of a liposarcoma of the uterine corpus when a neoplasm contains adipose tissue and a nonuniformly thickened or partially nodular septum on MRI.
