    Challenge of monitoring cohesive movement in homing fish using fine-scale 3D positioning

    Rockfish, which are well known for their site fidelity and homing ability, live sympatrically with many conspecifics. Conspecifics may be external drivers influencing rockfish movement, and rockfish may move cohesively while travelling. We tested whether rockfish formed a group when returning to their original habitat after artificial displacement and examined the routes they travelled to return home. A fine-scale multi-individual simultaneous positioning method was used to observe the movement trajectories of tagged fish. Our results showed that tagged fish, released in groups, returned to their original habitat (5 of 8 fish) but generally did not travel with other individuals. There was one exception in which 2 individuals moved together for ~100 s immediately after release. These 2 fish had no designated leader, alternating as leader and follower. Our hypothesis was partially corroborated by these rockfish possibly travelling cohesively. The returning fish tended to travel along the sea bottom and the coastline, independent of current; thus, they likely used visual cues, rather than olfactory or social cues, to return home

    Possible ability of bovine follicular fluid to attract migrating bull spermatozoa

    AimTo examine the potential of bovine follicular fluid (BFF) to attract bull spermatozoa. MethodsThe ability of the BFF to attract bull sperm was evaluated by observing changes in sperm migration after being placed in a cross-column chamber. The movement parameters of the heads and flagella of the sperm that were attracted to the BFF were analyzed by using the Computer Assisted Sperm Analysis system. ResultsIt was observed that 61.6% of the bull sperm migrated toward the BFF when the BFF was used at a concentration of 0.1%, but 67.2% of the sperm did not migrate toward the BFF at a concentration of 10%. Relatively larger numbers of both precapacitated and postcapacitated bull sperm migrated toward the BFF (0.1%). The ability of the 0.1% BFF to attract sperm probably affected both the normal artificial insemination (AI) fertility sperm and the poor AI fertility spermatozoa. The flagellar curvilinear ratio of the sperm winding to the 0.1% BFF was significantly higher than that of the prewinding sperm. ConclusionThese results could suggest that BFF potentially attracts bull sperm at a certain concentration, irrespective of the capacitation status of the sperm.     Abscess Formation of the Round Ligament of the Liver: Report of a Case

    Abscess formation of the round ligament of the liver is very rare. We report a case of a 70-year-old female with abscess of the round ligament after an endoscopic papillotomy for choledocholithiasis. On the 21st day following papillotomy, abscess formation of the round ligament was found by ultrasonographic examination. Surgical treatment was performed because conservative therapy was not effective. The purulent fluid and necrotic tissue at the round ligament were completely removed. Cultures obtained from the abscess grew Staphylococcus epidermidis, but the mechanism of abscess formation in this case remains unclear.</p

    Multiple gastrointestinal stromal tumors in neurofi bromatosis type 1 treated with laparoscopic surgery

    Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) have been reported to occasionally occur in patients with neurofi bromatosis type 1 (NF-1), and many cases have had multiple lesions predominantly involving the small intestine. We report herein a case of multiple GISTs associated with NF-1 from whom laparoscopic surgery was benefi cial. In a 79-year-old female admitted with anemia and melena, the abdominal computed tomography revealed a tumor arising from the small intestine. Laparoscopic surgery was performed, and another small tumor was revealed during laparoscopic observation. Extracorporeal partial and wedge resection of the small intestine were undertaken. Both lesions were diagnosed as typical GISTs of low risk. Laparoscopic surgery would be useful for examination and a minimally invasive approach to tumors of the small intestine, especially on cases with the possibility of multiple tumors.</p

    Impact of Energetic Ion Driven Global Modes on Toroidal Plasma Confinements

    Excitation of energetic-ion-driven Alfv6n eigenmodes (AEs) and their impact on energetic ion confinement are widely and intensively studied in helical devices such as CHS and LHD as well as major tokamaks. The excitation of AEs sensitively depends on the parameter space defined by the averaged beam beta and the velocity ratio V6nlV6 (V611 : injected beam ion velocity, Va: Alfv6n velocity). In LHD, these two relevant parameters are widely scanned without suffering from current disruptions. So far, toroidicity induced AE (TAE), global AE (GAE) and energetic particle mode (EPM) or resonant TAE (R-TAE) were identified during tangential neutral beam injection (NBI) in CHS and LHD. Moreover, a new coherent mode with the frequency by about 8 times higher than the TAE frequency was observed in NBI heated plasmas of LHD at low magnetic field (<0.6T). This mode may be induced by helical field components of the confinement field. Nonlinear phenomena of bursting amplitude modulation and fast frequency chirping are clearly seen for TAEs and EPMs in CHS and LHD. EPMs in CHS and bursting TAEs in LHD enhance radial transport of energetic ions in certain plasma conditions

    Successful Endoscopic Injection Sclerotherapy of High-Risk Gastroesophageal Varices in a Cirrhotic Patient with Hemophilia A

    A 68-year-old man with hemophilia A and liver cirrhosis caused by hepatitis C virus was referred to our hospital to receive prophylactic endoscopic treatment for gastroesophageal varices (GOV). He had large, tense, and winding esophageal varices (EV) with cherry red spots extending down to lesser curve, predicting the likelihood of bleeding. Esophageal endoscopic injection sclerotherapy (EIS) was performed with a total 15 mL of 5% ethanolamine oleate with iopamidol (EOI). Radiographic imaging during EIS demonstrated that 5% EOI reached the afferent vein of the varices. He was administered sufficient factor VIII concentrate before and after EIS to prevent massive bleeding from the varices. Seven days after EIS, upper gastrointestinal endoscopy (UGIE) showed that the varices were eradicated almost completely. Eighteen months after EIS, the varices continued to diminish.
