Absence of Wharton’s jelly: an association with feto-maternal morbidity

    Get PDF
Umbilical cord contains two arteries and one vein connecting fetus to the placenta and is responsible for blood flow between the two. It is surrounded by Wharton’s jelly which is a gelatinous substance and functions as adventitia layer of umbilical vessels, thereby providing insulation and protection to the umbilical cord. Umbilical cord abnormalities are associated with poor perinatal outcomes. Very few cases of absent Wharton’s jelly are reported in literature. Ours might be the 8th one in which we did a lower segment caesarean section for meconium stained liquor but the baby died after 12 hours

Severe eosinophilic syndrome associated with the use of probiotic supplements: a new entity?

    Get PDF
Severe eosinophilic syndromes related to the administration or use of unsuspected immunogenic substances have been described previously. Many of these diseases presented initially as clusters or isolated cases. The spanish toxic oil syndrome, the eosinophilia myalgia syndrome, and nephrogenic systemic fibrosis are examples of such diseases. We describe 2 cases of a severe eosinophilic syndrome characterized by marked peripheral blood eosinophilia (\u3e15,000 cells/ml), mononeuritis multiplex, and necrotizing vasculitis which developed in a close temporal association with the recent onset use of nonprescription probiotics. There was no history of a prior autoimmune disease. Although both cases had prompt response to immunosuppression with rapid resolution of peripheral blood eosinophilia and accompanying constitutional symptoms, they remained with permanent neurological deficits

Calculation of electron induced ionization cross sections of fusion plasma relevant material: W atoms

The electron induced processes on tungsten (W) and related materials are of prime importance for the fusion plasma application purposes. W and tungsten based materials have been recommended as the plasma facing components such as walls and divertors in the current fusion devices. We report electron impact total ionization cross sections (TICS) for the W atoms. We also report the direct ionization cross sections for the 4f, 5d, 5p and 6s sub shells of the ground state W. The ionization cross sections have been calculated in the variants of distorted wave approximation (DWA) using Hartree-Fock wavefunctions and distorted potential. We have also calculated ionization cross sections in simpler modified Kim and modified Khare models with scaling laws. Present TICS results have been compared with the other available theoretical results. Reasonable agreement with the existing theoretical results have been obtained for the TICS of W atoms by present distorted wave and BEB approaches. The majority of contribution to the total ionization cross section comes from the direct ionization of 6s and 5d subshells
