    The Blue Ocean Project

    No full text
I was fortunate enough to grow up in Maui, Hawai’i, where the volcanoes, jungles, and beaches were my playground. The ocean has always had a strong significance in my life and I have become a conservationist for the many issues surrounding it. The Blue Ocean Project was developed out of this interest; I aim to make others more aware of ocean water contamination and create new methods that communicate water quality results to the public more clearly and more effectively. The information that is currently available to beach users is displayed in an online spreadsheet of measurements without explanation and precautions are issued through warning systems that do not represent water quality. I have developed multiple projects that address these problems and that raise awareness of the issue, which includes a signage system, a mobile app, and two websites. All of my design work aspires to creatively connect people through experiences and emotions. For this project, I have targeted beach users in Hawai’i as the initial demographic but hope to develop this project further on a national level. The challenge for this project was that I had to design for two different types of beach users in Hawai’i, the local residents and the visitors. This required a combination of visual styles as well as an understanding of the language specific to both groups
