    Get PDF
The purpose of this study was to discover the health promoting needs of homeless women, residing in a shelter. A qualitative participatory action research (PAR) approach was used to solicit a deeper understanding of the women\u27s health promoting needs. PAR is designed as a systematic inquiry, including collaboration with those affected by the issue being studied for purposes of taking action, empowerment, and effecting change. The specific aims for this study were 1) describe the health promoting needs of homeless women in the context of their lives as homeless women; 2) develop and implement a plan for meeting the health promoting needs of homeless women in the context of their lives as homeless women. The research questions for this study were 1) What are the health promoting needs of homeless women?; 2) What does the homeless woman need in order to maintain or improve her health and well-being?; 3) What are the health promoting activities identified by homeless women that promote their health and well being within the context of living in a shelter for homeless women?; and, 4) What is the process developed and adopted by homeless women living in a shelter to promote their health and well being? Participation in this study was voluntary, totaling twenty-one (21) women who were recruited at various stages of the study. All women residing in the shelter met the inclusion criteria. The research team consisted of the homeless women and the researcher in the roles of co-researchers and co-participants. The PAR approach consisted of four (4) phases, planning, acting, observing and reflecting, and evaluating. The data were collected through group and individual interviews. Each interview was audio taped and documented. Open-ended questions were utilized to elicit a deeper and comprehensive view of the women\u27s health promoting needs and solutions to identified problems. The management of the data was completed manually by the researcher by entering data in to a computerized Word document. The analysis and interpretations of the data were presented to the research team who then validated the accuracy of the analysis and interpretation of the researcher. The team selected the activity to develop as an intervention. The findings from this study indicated that a group of homeless women who resided in a shelter identified exercise as their health promoting need. They planned and developed a six (6) week walking class to meet self determined group outcomes. The concept of commitment emerged from the data. The women began to understand how this concept impacted on their likelihood of participating in the walking classes. They took leadership roles throughout the study period. The findings of this study will be utilized to guide the development of culturally appropriate, community-based education/health promotion programs for homeless women at this shelter currently and in the future

The formation and functioning of the Trusteeship Council procedure for examining petitions

Thesis (M.A.)--Boston UniversityIt is difficult to understand petitions as a particular aspect of the Trusteeship System without knowledge of the historical forces which helped to shape the modern concept of trusteeship. It is easy, in fact, to think of trusteeship as a purely contemporary phenomenon. The opening statement of the Secretary-General of the United Nations at the first session of the Trusteeship Council highlights this point: "This is an occasion of historic significance. For the first time in the world's history a permanent international body, whose membership is composed solely of official representatives of Governments, is assembled to deal exclusively with the problems of non-self-governing peoples." The statement of the Secretary-General is, of course, correct, but it does not tell the lay reader any of the precedents behind the formation of this August body. If one accepts the principle that the protection of native rights is the cornerstone of modern trusteeship, there is evidence that ever since the 16th century there seems to have been a logical progression toward the evolution of the philosophy eventually advanced in the Covenant of the League of Nations and presently in the Charter of the United Nations. Get PDF
A single cyberattack event involving 1 major corporation can cause severe business and social devastation. In this single case study, a major U.S. airline company was selected for exploration of the strategies information technology administrators and airline managers implemented to reduce the financial devastation that may be caused by a cyberattack. Seven participants, of whom 4 were airline managers and 3 were IT administrators, whose primary responsibility included implementation of strategies to plan for and respond to cyberattacks participated in the data collection process. This study was grounded on the general systems theory. Data collection entailed semistructured face-to-face and telephone interviews and collection and review of public documents. The data analysis process of this study involved the use of Yin\u27s 5-step process of compiling, disassembling, reassembling, interpreting, and concluding, which provided a detailed analysis of the emerging themes. The findings produced results that identified strategies organizational managers and administrators of a U.S. airline implemented to reduce the fiscal influence of cyberattacks, such as proactive plans for education and training, active management, and an incident response plan. The findings of this study might affect social change by offering all individuals a perspective on creating effective cyberculture. An understanding of cyberculture could include the focus of a heightened understanding, whereby, to ensure the security of sensitive or privileged data and information and of key assets, thus, reducing the fiscal devastation that may be caused by cyberattacks

    Get PDF
This is a phenomenological, qualitative study of 25 school nurses employed in a large, urban school district in the Midwestern section of the United States. The study’s participants possess histories of professional work experiences in nursing specialties other than school nursing. Given the wide range of potential nursing opportunities currently available to registered nurses with baccalaureate degrees, participants’ responses regarding their selection of school nursing as a career, their past and present job satisfaction levels in school nursing, challenges, success definitions, and the integration of work with home life all bring clarity to the participants’ perspectives on this specialty of nursing. The insights of these school nurses assist in illuminating the personal and professional values of this cohort of school professionals
