    User adaptive Web engine : a marketing application in E-commerce

Eng.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, 2008.Includes bibliographical references (p. 51).In order to improve the effectiveness of communications in marketing, companies must now find ways to target their marketing campaigns to the right people, and present content in a way that the end user is most comfortable with. Contrary to classical market segmentation, the user adaptive Web engine in this paper segments users based on cognitive and cultural dimensions. To build a Web site that changes based on what the user has clicked on, the system must be capable of figuring out what version to serve, and be able to morph between different versions of the Web site. The engine to achieve this goal has two main components: the presentation engine, and the math engine. I am responsible for building the presentation engine, and to ensure that it interfaces well with the math engine. First, I designed the entire system to make sure that it follows the main principle of software engineering-modularity. Then, I implemented the presentation engine. As part of the research group, I helped create working prototypes for two industry partners. Lastly, 501 participants in a study conducted in Japan evaluated the prototype Web site. Results showed significant positive effects of morphing in terms of user experience, and probability of purchase. This research has made contributions to how morphing Web sites should be built.     The efficacy of allergen immunotherapy with cat dander in reducing symptoms in clinical practice.

    Background. Allergy to cat dander is a common form of allergic disease. Allergen immunotherapy has been demonstrated to be effective in decreasing allergic symptoms. Objectives. To examine outcomes in allergic asthmatic patients on cat immunotherapy (CIT) compared to allergic asthmatics on traditional immunotherapy (IT) without cat sensitivity. Methods. A retrospective review identified allergic asthmatics on CIT for at least three years. An equal number of allergic asthmatics on IT were identified for comparison. Outcomes investigated include measurements of risk of asthma exacerbation. Results. Thirty-five patients were identified in each group. There were no differences in the CIT group versus the comparison group regarding total number of prednisone tapers (18 tapers versus 14 tapers, resp.), number of patients requiring prednisone tapers (10 patients versus 10 patients, resp.), total number of acute visits (29 visits versus 38 visits, resp.), and number of patients requiring acute visits (15 patients versus 21 patients, resp.). When stratified by concomitant ICS use, patients on CIT were less likely to require an acute visit (46% versus 78%, resp.). Conclusions. Allergic asthmatics with cat sensitivity on CIT with close dander exposure have similar risk of asthma exacerbation compared to allergic asthmatics without cat sensitivity on immunotherapy

    Validation and reliability of the Physical Activity Scale for the Elderly in Chinese population

    Objectives: Physical Activity Scale for the Elderly (PASE) is a widely used questionnaire in epidemiological studies for assessing the physical activity level of elderly. This study aims to translate and validate PASE in Chinese population. Design: Cross-sectional study. Subjects: Chinese elderly aged 65 or above. Methods: The original English version of PASE was translated into Chinese (PASE-C) following standardized translation procedures. Ninety Chinese elderly aged 65 or above were recruited in the community. Test-retest reliability was determined by comparing the scores obtained from two separate administrations by the intraclass correlation coefficient. Validity was evaluated by Spearman’s rank correlation coefficients between PASE and Medical Outcome Survey 36-Item Short Form Health Survey (SF-36), grip strength, single-leg-stance, 5 times sit-to-stand and 10-m walk. Results: PASE-C demonstrated good test-retest reliability (intraclass correlation coefficient  =0.81). Fair to moderate association were found between PASE-C and most of the subscales of SF-36 (rs=0.285 to 0.578, p<0.01), grip strength (rs=0.405 to 0.426, p<0.001), single-leg-stance (rs =0.470 to 0.548, p<0.001), 5 times sit-to-stand (rs =–0.33, p=0.001) and 10-m walk (rs =–0.281, p=0.007). Conclusion: PASE-C is a reliable and valid instrument for assessing the physical activity level of elderly in Chinese population

    A Preliminary Psychometric Investigation of a Chinese Version of the Engaged Teachers Scale (C-ETS)

    This study examines the psychometric properties of a Chinese version of the Engaged Teacher Scale (C-ETS). A translated questionnaire with 16 items was administered to a sample of 341 primary and secondary school teachers in Hong Kong. A series of confirmatory factor analyses were performed to assess the construct, convergent, and discriminant validity of the scale in alternative models. Results provide support for a second-order model with teacher engagement as an overarching construct with four hypothesized dimensions: emotional engagement, cognitive engagement, social engagement (students), and social engagement (colleagues). The C-ETS provides a useful measure for teacher engagement in Chinese societies. Contributions and limitations of the study are discussed

    BACKGROUND: Visual hallucinations (VH) are one of the most striking nonmotor symptoms in Parkinson's disease (PD), and predict dementia and mortality. Aberrant default mode network (DMN) is associated with other psychoses. Here, we tested the hypothesis that DMN dysfunction contributes to VH in PD. METHODS: Resting state functional data was acquired from individuals with PD with VH (PDVH) and without VH (PDnonVH), matched for levodopa drug equivalent dose, and a healthy control group (HC). Independent component analysis was used to investigate group differences in functional connectivity within the DMN. In addition, we investigated whether the functional changes associated with hallucinations were accompanied by differences in cortical thickness. RESULTS: There were no group differences in cortical thickness but functional coactivation within components of the DMN was significantly lower in both PDVH and PDnonVH groups compared to HC. Functional coactivation within the DMN was found to be greater in PDVH group relative to PDnonVH group. CONCLUSION: Our study demonstrates, for the first time that, within a functionally abnormal DMN in PD, relatively higher "connectivity" is associated with VH.     Evaluating the importation of yellow fever cases into China in 2016 and strategies used to prevent and control the spread of the disease

    During the yellow fever epidemic in Angola in 2016, cases of yellow fever were reported in China for the first time. The 11 cases, all Chinese nationals returning from Angola, were identified in March and April 2016, one to two weeks after the peak of the Angolan epidemic. One patient died; the other 10 cases recovered after treatment. This paper reviews the epidemiological characteristics of the 11 yellow fever cases imported into China. It examines case detection and disease control and surveillance, and presents recommendations for further action to prevent additional importation of yellow fever into China

    Magnetic Resonance Water Proton Relaxation in Protein Solutions and Tissue: T1ρ Dispersion Characterization

    BACKGROUND: Image contrast in clinical MRI is often determined by differences in tissue water proton relaxation behavior. However, many aspects of water proton relaxation in complex biological media, such as protein solutions and tissue are not well understood, perhaps due to the limited empirical data. PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Water proton T(1), T(2), and T(1rho) of protein solutions and tissue were measured systematically under multiple conditions. Crosslinking or aggregation of protein decreased T(2) and T(1rho), but did not change high-field T(1). T(1rho) dispersion profiles were similar for crosslinked protein solutions, myocardial tissue, and cartilage, and exhibited power law behavior with T(1rho)(0) values that closely approximated T(2). The T(1rho) dispersion of mobile protein solutions was flat above 5 kHz, but showed a steep curve below 5 kHz that was sensitive to changes in pH. The T(1rho) dispersion of crosslinked BSA and cartilage in DMSO solvent closely resembled that of water solvent above 5 kHz but showed decreased dispersion below 5 kHz. CONCLUSIONS: Proton exchange is a minor pathway for tissue T(1) and T(1rho) relaxation above 5 kHz. Potential models for relaxation are discussed, however the same molecular mechanism appears to be responsible across 5 decades of frequencies from T(1rho) to T(1)

    Abstract Researchers and practitioners devote substantial effort to targeting banner advertisements, but less effort on how to communicate with consumers once targeted. Morphing enables a website to learn (actively and near optimally) which banner advertisements to serve to each cognitive-style segment in order to maximize click-through, brand consideration, and purchase. Cognitive-style segments are identified automatically from consumers&apos; clickstreams. This paper describes the first large-sample random-assignment field-test of banner morphing -over 100,000 consumers viewing over 450,000 banners on CNET.com. On relevant webpages, CNET&apos;s click-through rates almost doubled relative to control banners. We supplement the CNET field test with a focused experiment on an automotive information-andrecommendation website. The focused experiment replaces automated learning with a longitudinal design to test the premise of morph-to-segment matching. Banners matched to cognitive styles, as well as the stage of the consumer&apos;s buying process and body-type preference, significantly increase click-through rates, brand consideration, and purchase likelihood relative to a control. Together the field and the focused experiments demonstrate that matching cognitive styles provide significant benefits above and beyond more-traditional targeting.
