We reported the resent advansement of endovascular treatment for cerebral strokepatients, coil embolization for aneurysm, local fibrinolytic therapy for acute major cerebralartery occlusion and stent inplantation for cerebral artery stenosis. Detachable coil embolizationwas done for 101 patient with (105) cerebral aneurysms. Detachable coil treatment technologyfor cerebral aneurysms were effective and safe. We treated intraarterial local fibrinolysisfor 94 patients of acute major cerebral artery occlusion. Our clinical trial may indicate abetter choice for cases with acute ischemic cerebral stroke. Especially early treatment within4 hours from onset may lead to have more enhance of good clinical improvemant. Stentinplantation for carotid artery, vertebral artey and subculavian artery was done for 11patients with arterio-screlotic stenosis. Stent inplantation for cerebral artery stenosis iseffective, although we need more safety protection for embolism and prevention technologyagainst restenosis

Preliminary Clinical Evaluation of Toxicity and Efficacy of A New Astaxanthin-rich Haematococcus pluvialis Extract

Astaxanthin (Ax), a carotenoid ubiquitously distributed in microorganisms, fish, and crustaceans, has been known to be a potent antioxidant and hence exhibit various physiological effects. We attempted in these studies to evaluate clinical toxicity and efficacy of long-term administration of a new Ax product, by measuring biochemical and hematological blood parameters and by analyzing brain function (using CogHealth and P300 measures). Ax-rich Haematococcus pluvialis extracts equivalent to 4, 8, 20 mg of Ax dialcohol were administered to 73, 38, and 16 healthy adult volunteers, respectively, once daily for 4 weeks to evaluate safety. Ten subjects with age-related forgetfulness received an extract equivalent to 12 mg in a daily dosing regimen for 12 weeks to evaluate efficacy. As a result, no abnormality was observed and efficacy for age-related decline in cognitive and psychomotor functions was suggested

Cholestasis induces reversible accumulation of periplakin in mouse liver

Abstract Background Periplakin (PPL) is a rod-shaped cytolinker protein thought to connect cellular adhesion junctional complexes to cytoskeletal filaments. PPL serves as a structural component of the cornified envelope in the skin and interacts with various types of proteins in cultured cells; its level decreases dramatically during tumorigenic progression in human epithelial tissues. Despite these intriguing observations, the physiological roles of PPL, especially in non-cutaneous tissues, are still largely unknown. Because we observed a marked fluctuation of PPL expression in mouse liver in association with the bile acid receptor farnesoid X receptor (FXR) and cholestasis, we sought to characterize the role of PPL in the liver and determine its contributions to the etiology and pathogenesis of cholestasis. Methods Time- and context-dependent expression of PPL in various mouse models of hepatic and renal disorders were examined by immunohistochemistry, western blotting, and quantitative real-time polymerase chain reactions. Results The hepatic expression of PPL was significantly decreased in Fxr −/− mice. In contrast, the expression was dramatically increased during cholestasis, with massive PPL accumulation observed at the boundaries of hepatocytes in wild-type mice. Interestingly, the hepatic accumulation of PPL resulting from cholestasis was reversible. In addition, similar accumulation of PPL at cellular boundaries was found in epithelial cells around renal tubules upon ureteral obstruction. Conclusions PPL may be involved in the temporal accommodation to fluid stasis in different tissues. Further examination of the roles for PPL may lead to the discovery of a novel mechanism for cellular protection by cytolinkers that is applicable to many tissues and in many contexts.http://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/112610/1/12876_2013_Article_974.pd

Individual Radiation Exposure Dose Due to Support Activities at Safe Shelters in Fukushima Prefecture

Immediately after the accidents in the nuclear power stations in Fukushima on March 11, the Japanese Government ordered the evacuation of the residents within a 20-km radius from the station on March 12, and asked various institutions to monitor the contamination levels of the residents. Hirosaki University, which is located 355 km north of Fukushima City, decided to send support staff to Fukushima. This report summarizes the results of the exposure of 13 individual teams from March 15 to June 20. The support teams surveyed more than 5,000 people during this period. Almost all subjects had external contamination levels of less than 13 kcpm on Geiger-Müller (GM) survey meter, which is categorized as “no contamination level.” The 1st team showed the highest external exposure dose, but the 4th team onward showed no significant change. Subsequently, the internal radiation exposure was measured using a whole body counter that indicated undetectable levels in all staff members. Although the measured external radiation exposure dose cannot have serious biological effects on the health of an individual, a follow-up study of the residents in Fukushima and other regions where the radioactive material has spread will be required for a long time

Analysis of the normal transition event of the LHD helical coils

Normal transitions and a subsequent quench were experienced with the pool-cooled helical coils of the Large Helical Device (LHD) during its excitation test. Although the initiated normal zone once started to recover, a disruptive transverse propagation followed and triggered an emergency discharging program. The cryogenic stability of the composite-type superconductor has been studied by sample experiments as well as by numerical calculations. Due to the rather long magnetic diffusion time constant in the pure Al stabilizer, transient stability of the conductor seems to play an important role for driving finite propagation of a normal zone. The cause of the final quench is also discussed from the viewpoint of cooling deterioration due to a possible accumulation of He bubble

Stroke Care Unit (SCU) in Tokushima University Hospital has been opened since November 1999. Patients with acute stroke in SCU were diagnosed by stroke MRI and biomarker immediately after their admission. Diffusion MRI could diagnose the ultra-acute ischemic and hemorrhagic lesion except brainstem ischemic lesion within 3 hrs after onset. Diffusion-Perfusion mismatch was useful to indicate intra-arterial thrombolytic therapy. 3T-MRI was introduced since March 2004,and it can measured functional MR spectroscopy and tractography more quickly compared to 1.5T-MRI. Plasma oxidized LDL in patients with acute cerebral infarction was significantly higher than that in healthy control and it became peak level during 3‐5 day after stroke onset. In conclusion, stroke MRI and plasma oxidized LDL are useful diagnostic tools for acute stroke
