    Interesting similarities have been shown between the reactions of sym-trinitrobenzene with cycloalkanones, and with phloroglucinol. Previously unsuspected common intermediates have been shown to intervene. The structurally similar products in each case are tricyclic nitropropene nitronates. Protonation of these yields the corresponding nitronic acids in certain instances

    The occurence of flow breakdown during the wind tunnel testing of a powered V/STOL aircraft was studied. Flow breakdown is the low forward speed test limit in a solid wall wind tunnel and is characterized by a vortex which forms on the floor and walls of the wind tunnel thereby failing to simulate free air conditions. The flow is caused by the interaction of the model wake and tunnel boundary layer and affects the model's aerodynamic characteristics in such fashion as to negate their reliability as correctable wind tunnel data. The low speed test limit was examined using a model that possessed a discretely concentrated powered lift system using a pair of lift jets. The system design is discussed and the tests and results which show that flow breakdown occurs at a velocity ratio of approximately 0.20 are reported

    A computerized Langmuir probe system

    For low pressure plasmas it is important to record entire single or double Langmuir probe characteristics accurately. For plasmas with a depleted high energy tail, the accuracy of the recorded ion current plays a critical role in determining the electron temperature. Even for high density Maxwellian distributions, it is necessary to accurately model the ion current to obtain the correct electron density. Since the electron and ion current saturation values are, at best, orders of magnitude apart, a single current sensing resistor cannot provide the required resolution to accurately record these values. We present an automated, personal computer based data acquisition system for the determination of fundamental plasma properties in low pressure plasmas. The system is designed for single and double Langmuir probes, whose characteristics can be recorded over a bias voltage range of ±70 V with 12 bit resolution. The current flowing through the probes can be recorded within the range of 5 nA–100 mA. The use of a transimpedance amplifier for current sensing eliminates the requirement for traditional current sensing resistors and hence the need to correct the raw data. The large current recording range is realized through the use of a real time gain switching system in the negative feedback loop of the transimpedance amplifier

    Healthcare-associated pneumonia: Diagnostic criteria and distinction from community-acquired pneumonia

    Summary Background: Traditionally, pneumonia developing in patients who receive healthcare services in the outpatient environment has been classified as community-acquired pneumonia (CAP). However, recent investigations suggest that this type of infection, known as healthcare-associated pneumonia (HCAP), is distinct from CAP in terms of its epidemiology, etiology, and risk for infection with multidrug-resistant (MDR) pathogens. Methods: A Medline literature review of available clinical studies using the term HCAP was conducted to determine outcomes compared to CAP and effective empiric treatment strategies. Results: Analysis of multi-institutional clinical data showed that mortality in hospitalized patients with HCAP is greater than that in CAP, and patients with HCAP received inappropriate initial empiric antibiotic treatment more frequently than CAP patients. The bacterial pathogens associated with HCAP also differed from CAP with potentially MDR Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria being more common in HCAP. Conclusions: All patients hospitalized with suspected HCAP should be evaluated for their underlying risk of infection with MDR pathogens. Because HCAP is similar to hospital-acquired pneumonia (HAP), both clinically and etiologically, it should be treated as HAP until culture data become available

    Cu-NMR study on the disordered quantum spin magnet with the Bose-glass ground state

    Cu-NMR study has been performed on the disordered spin-gap system Tl1-xKxCuCl3 In the high-field H > HC=\Delta/\mu_B, where \Delta is the spin-gap, the hyperfine field becomes extremely inhomogeneous at low temperatures due to the field-induced magnetic order, indicating that the ordered spin state must be different from the pure TlCuCl3. In the low field H < HC, a saturating behavior in the longitudinal nuclear spin relaxation rate 1/T1 was observed at low temperatures, indicating existence of the magnetic ground state proposed to be Bose-glass phase by Fisher.Comment: RHMF200

    1^1H-NMR Study of the Random Bond Effect in the Quantum Spin System (CH3_3)2_2CHNH3_3Cu(Clx_xBr1x_{1-x})3_3

    Spin-lattice relaxation rate T11T_1^{-1} of 1^1H-NMR has been measured in (CH3_3)2_2CHNH3_3Cu(Clx_xBr1x_{1-x})3_3 with x=0.88x=0.88, which has been reported to be gapped system with singlet ground state from the previous macroscopic magnetization and specific heat measurements, in order to investigate the bond randomness effect microscopically in the gapped composite Haldane system (CH3_3)2_2CHNH3_3CuCl3_3. It was found that the spin-lattice relaxation rate T11T_1^{-1} in the present system includes both fast and slow relaxation parts indicative of the gapless magnetic ground state and the gapped singlet ground state, respectively. We discuss the obtained results with the previous macroscopic magnetization and specific heat measurements together with the microscopic μ\muSR experiments.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, to be published in J.
