    Effect of statins on coronary bifurcation atherosclerosis: an intravascular ultrasound virtual histology study

    This study is aimed at assessing by intravascular ultrasound virtual histology (VH-IVUS) the effect of statins on coronary bifurcation atherosclerosis in non-culprit vessels. In this non-randomized study, in 48 patients, 51 bifurcation atherosclerotic sites in non-culprit vessels without significant angiographic stenosis, underwent baseline and 12 months follow-up VH-IVUS. Patients received treatment with either simvastatin (20 mg daily, n = 24) or rosuvastatin (10 mg daily, n = 24) for the same period. VH-IVUS analysis of bifurcation lesions included the 5-mm proximal, bifurcation only (side-branch point) and 5-mm distal subsegments. Overall plaque and external elastic membrane volume decreased after 1 year (115.7 ± 35.5 to 106.1 ± 29.3 mm3, P < 0.001; and 241.0 ± 57.0 to 232.4 ± 54.2 mm3, P = 0.005, respectively). Similarly, overall dense calcium volume significantly increased (7.1 ± 5.3 to 11.0 ± 8.5 mm3, P < 0.010), while fibrous and fibrofatty volumes significantly decreased (36.9 ± 19.2 to 24.1 ± 11.7 mm3, P < 0.001; and 5.1 ± 3.8 to 2.3 ± 2.0 mm3, P < 0.001, respectively), and necrotic core volume did not change significantly (17.0 ± 11.1 to 19.8 ± 13.5 mm3, P = 0.053). There were no significant differences in compositional analysis between the simvastatin and rosuvastatin treatment groups. However, within groups, necrotic core volume significantly increased in the simvastatin treatment group (19.7 ± 13.9 to 24.3 ± 16.1 mm3, P = 0.029) but not in the rosuvastatin treatment group. The independent clinical predictors for reduction of necrotic core volume by multiple stepwise logistic regression analysis were the percent change of HDL-cholesterol level (P = 0.041, odds ratio: 1.052, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.002 to 1.104) and the percent change of hsCRP level (P = 0.021, odds ratio: 0.989, 95% CI: 0.980 to 0.998). After 1 year, overall dense calcium volume significantly increased whilst fibrous and fibrofatty volumes significantly decreased; no significant change in the content of necrotic core was observed. Although changes in the volumes of all plaque components were not significantly different between the simvastatin and rosuvastatin treatment groups, halting of necrotic core progression was apparent in the rosuvastatin group

    On the Characteristic Difference of Neoclassical Bootstrap Current and Its Effects on MHD Equilibria between CHS Heliotron/Torsatron and CHS-qa Quasi-Axisymmetric Stellarator

    The characteristic difference of neoclassical bootstrap current and its effects on MHD equilibria are described for the CHS heliotron/torsatron and the CHS-qa quasi-axisymmetric stellarator. The direction of bootstrap current strongly depends on collisionality in CHS, whereas it does not in CHS-qa because of quasi-axisymmetry. In the CHS configuration, it appears that enhanced bumpy (Bs1) and sideband components of helical ripple (By1) play an important role in reducing the magnetic geometrical factor, which is a key factor in evaluating the value of bootstrap cuffent, and determining its polarity. The bootstrap current in CHS-qa is theoretically predicted to be larger than that in CHS and produces significant effects on the resulting rotational transform and magnetic shear. In the finite B plasmas, the magnetic well becomes deeper in both CHS and CHS-qa and its region is expanded in CHS. The existence of co-flowing bootstrap current makes the magnetic well shallow in comparison with that in currentless equilibrium

    Orbit Topology and Confinement of Energetic Ions in the CHS-qa Quasi-Axisymmetric Stellarator

    The orbit topology and confinement of neutral beam-injected energetic ions are investigated for the current target configuration of the CHS-qa quasi-axisymmetric stellarator. It was shown that tangentially co-injected neutral beam (NB) heating is efficient even at a low magnetic field strength Bt of 0.5 T, whereas the heating efficiency of the counter-injected NB becomes significantly lower as Bt decreases because of the increase of first orbit loss. The energy loss rate increases as the beam injection angle becomes perpendicular, suggesting that the residual non-axisymmetric ripple in the peripheral domain plays a role in enhancing the transport of trapped ions. An interesting observation involves the appearance of the island structure in both the gyro motion following orbit and the guiding center collisionless orbit of counter-moving transit beam ions.     The Modular Multilevel Converter (MMC) with cascaded full bridge cells is available for AC/AC transmission system without transformers in high voltage line. This research applied a Hexagonal MMC (H-MMC) to 3-phase AC-AC back-to-back (BTB) system. The H-MMC has six arm modules with floating capacitors and is required to regulate the input-output power and capacitor voltages by controlling currents in arm modules. Theory of the power flow of H-MMC is analyzed and the control scheme of the power flow and capacitor voltage regulation is proposed. Currents in the arm modules are controlled by the internal model principle and H-MMC can operate appropriately.     Intracluster Short Gamma-Ray Bursts by Compact Binary Mergers

    One of the possible origins of short gamma-ray bursts (SGRBs) is merging of compact binaries, and the effect of large kick velocity is a signature that can be used as an observational test for this hypothesis. Intracluster SGRBs that escaped from a host galaxy in a galaxy cluster are interesting in this context, since they would escape more easily by cluster tidal force, and would have brighter afterglow luminosity by dense intracluster gas, than those in general field galaxies. Here we calculate the escape fraction of compact binaries from their host galaxies in a galaxy cluster, and discuss some observational implications. We found that the escape fraction strongly depends on the nature of dark matter subhalos associated with member galaxies. If the amount of dark matter around member galaxies is not large and the gravitational potential for an escaping binary is determined mostly by stellar mass, most of SGRBs should escape and be observed as hostless, which is a much higher fraction than those in the field. Hence, statistics of intracluster SGRBs could give important information about the dark matter distribution in galaxy clusters, as well as hints for the origin of SGRBs.Comment: 6 pages, 1 figure, accepted to ApJ Letters; added discussion about evolution of galaxies and cluster

    Effects of Current Profile on Global Ideal MHD Stability in a Compact Quasi-Axisymmetric Stellarator

    The global ideal magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) stability for a proposed compact quasi-axisymmetric stellarator CHS-qa has been investigated taking the effect of bootstrap current into account. Assuming experimentally achievable density and temperature profiles, the stability properties of global low-n modes have been studied by using threedimensionalnumerical codes based on fixed boundary MHD equilibria including self-consistent bootstrap current for the CHS-qa reference configuration. Consequently it has been shown that values of edge rotational transform play a crucial role in triggering external kink instability. Concerning a lot of other possibilities in experimental practice to change the total parallel current, we have also studied equilibria with increased or decreased parallel current, but fixed profile. The onset of external kink modes depends on rotational transform or current profile, and we found a stable equilibrium in spite of the edge rotational transform above 0.5. The results imply the possibility of stabilizing external kink modes through current and/or pressure profile control in high beta equilibria

    SDSSp J104433.04−-012502.2 at z=5.74z=5.74 is Gravitationally Magnified by an Intervening Galaxy

    During the course of our optical deep survey program on Lα\alpha emitters at z≈5.7z \approx 5.7 in the sky area surrounding the quasar SDSSp J104433.04−-012502.2 at z=5.74z=5.74, we found that a faint galaxy with mBm_B(AB) ≈25\approx 25 is located at \timeform{1".9} southwest of the quasar. Its broad-band color properties from BB to z′z^\prime suggest that the galaxy is located at a redshift of z∼1.5z \sim 1.5 -- 2.5. This is consistent with no strong emission line in our optical spectroscopy. Since the counter image of the quasar cannot be seen in our deep optical images, the magnification factor seems not to be very high.     Variation of Heating Efficiency of Magnetically Sheared CHS Plasmas by Polarization Control of 106GHz EC-Wave

    To clarify the effect of polarization on electron cyclotron heating (ECH) in magnetized plasmas, experiment controlling the polarization of injected EC-waves is carried out in Compact Helical System (CHS). In the experiment, plasmas are generated and sustained only with 106.4 GHz ECH power. Magnetic field at the magnetic axis is 1.9 T so that the wave frequency is second harmonic. The optimum direction of linear polarization for the shortest time-delay of density start-up from the start of power injection and the optimum direction for the highest electron temperature and plasma stored energy during plasma duration show clear difference. The difference is attributed to the CHS magnetic configuration with strong shear and the plasma volume expansion from magnetic axis to the last closed flux surface
