    For the majority of developing nations, malnutrition is a recurring issue. Globally, one in ten people are undernourished and though the problem exists in every country, not surprisingly, the extent is more severe in low-income countries. In this part of the world, smallholders play a key role in the food system as they produce diverse and culturally appropriate food. This has an implication for efforts to combat hunger. Efforts that aim to address the problem of malnutrition in the global south should make smallholders its central focus. The current food system contributes to malnutrition and significantly raises global greenhouse gas emissions. This trade-off should be considered while redesigning the food systems to tackle food insecurity and malnutrition. Thus, the challenge is how to alleviate malnutrition in developing countries without putting more strain on the environment or failing to protect smallholders. Three improvements—fortification, biofortification, and technologies that lessen women's domestic labour—were the subject of my thesis. These treatments are affordable, offer long-term solutions to combat malnutrition, and take advantage of the target population's current eating habits and food preferences. The main portions of my thesis then looked at how to use these advances to combat hunger. The first three chapters can be classified as technological innovations that occur within the food value chain element of the food system, while the final chapter can be classified as a consumer behaviour element of the system because it empowers women by reducing home labour

    Technical efficiency of small-scale honey producer in Ethiopia: A Stochastic Frontier Analysis

    Ethiopian farmers have a long tradition of beekeeping and the country has huge potential for honey production. However traditional mode of production still dominate the sub sector which negatively affect the total production and productivity. A number of studies has been conducted to better understand the working honey production however none of them systematically investigate the extent of technical efficiency of the sub-sector. This paper uses Stochastic Frontier production model to quantifying the extent of technical efficiency and identify exogenous determinant of inefficiency. The result showed that consistent with other studies traditional practice dominate small scale honey production in Ethiopia. The finding also revealed that use of purchased inputs such as bee forage and other supplement is very limited among honey producers indicating that natural bee forage is the primary source of bee forage. The immediate consequence of all these is low production and productivity. The number of hives the household owns, whether the household used improved apiculture technologies, availability of natural forest which is the primary sources of nectar for bees and amount of land owned by the households were found to have a significant influence on the amount of honey produced by beekeeper. Our result further showed that the mean technical efficiency of honey producers is 0.79 implying that, on average honey producer produce 80 percent of the maximum output. The implication is that 20 percent of the potential output is lost due to technical inefficiency. Number of hives owned by a honey produces, distance to district town-a proxy to market access, household wealth, and whether the household head has a leadership role in the PA affect the technical efficiency of honey producers. The finding suggest that policies that aim to expand the use of improved hives is expected to increase the honey production at household level. The result also suggest that investment on rural infrastructure would be instrumental in improving technical efficiency of honey producer

    Access to credit is often viewed as a key to transform semi-subsistence smallholders into market oriented producers. However only few studies have examined factors that affect farmers’ decision to allocate credit on farm activities in general and livestock production in particular. A trivariate probit model with double selection is employed to identify factors that affect farmers’ decision to allocate credit on livestock production using data collected from smallholder farmers in Ethiopia. After controlling for two sample selection bias – taking credit in the production season and decision to allocate credit on farm activities – land ownership and access to a livestock centered extension service are found to have a significant (p<0.001) effect on farmers decision to use credit for livestock production. The result showed farmers with large land holding, and access to a livestock centered extension services are more likely to utilize credit for livestock production. However since the effect of land ownership squared is negative the effect of land ownership for those who own a large plot of land lessens. The study highlights the fact that improving access to credit does not automatically translate into more productive households. Improving farmers’ access to credit should be followed by a focused extension services

    Analysis of milk production, butter marketing and household use of inputs in rural Ethiopia

    This paper uses two triple-hurdle models to analyse the determinants of Ethiopian rural households decisions in (1) milk production, butter marketing and volume of butter sales; and (2) milk production, purchased input use and intensity of purchased input use. Results are based on data collected from 5000 households and 497 rural communities in the highlands of Ethiopia. Availability of feed stands out as an important factor influencing household decision to engage in milk production, indicating the dire need to develop feed resources to promote dairy production in rural Ethiopia. Milk production in rural Ethiopia seems to have an interesting and complex gender dimension. While female-headed households are less likely to be engaged in milk production, perhaps because of resource limitations, they are more likely to manage their dairy farms intensively. Marketing costs matter in dairy production and marketing in rural Ethiopia, suggesting for the need to develop market infrastructures for both dairy outputs and inputs. Our results further show that participation in butter markets as sellers or the amount of butter sales do not respond to price signals, suggesting the need to understand the behavioural aspect of dairy marketing decision in rural Ethiopia.     Global, regional, and national burden of disorders affecting the nervous system, 1990–2021: a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2021

    BackgroundDisorders affecting the nervous system are diverse and include neurodevelopmental disorders, late-life neurodegeneration, and newly emergent conditions, such as cognitive impairment following COVID-19. Previous publications from the Global Burden of Disease, Injuries, and Risk Factor Study estimated the burden of 15 neurological conditions in 2015 and 2016, but these analyses did not include neurodevelopmental disorders, as defined by the International Classification of Diseases (ICD)-11, or a subset of cases of congenital, neonatal, and infectious conditions that cause neurological damage. Here, we estimate nervous system health loss caused by 37 unique conditions and their associated risk factors globally, regionally, and nationally from 1990 to 2021.MethodsWe estimated mortality, prevalence, years lived with disability (YLDs), years of life lost (YLLs), and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs), with corresponding 95% uncertainty intervals (UIs), by age and sex in 204 countries and territories, from 1990 to 2021. We included morbidity and deaths due to neurological conditions, for which health loss is directly due to damage to the CNS or peripheral nervous system. We also isolated neurological health loss from conditions for which nervous system morbidity is a consequence, but not the primary feature, including a subset of congenital conditions (ie, chromosomal anomalies and congenital birth defects), neonatal conditions (ie, jaundice, preterm birth, and sepsis), infectious diseases (ie, COVID-19, cystic echinococcosis, malaria, syphilis, and Zika virus disease), and diabetic neuropathy. By conducting a sequela-level analysis of the health outcomes for these conditions, only cases where nervous system damage occurred were included, and YLDs were recalculated to isolate the non-fatal burden directly attributable to nervous system health loss. A comorbidity correction was used to calculate total prevalence of all conditions that affect the nervous system combined.FindingsGlobally, the 37 conditions affecting the nervous system were collectively ranked as the leading group cause of DALYs in 2021 (443 million, 95% UI 378–521), affecting 3·40 billion (3·20–3·62) individuals (43·1%, 40·5–45·9 of the global population); global DALY counts attributed to these conditions increased by 18·2% (8·7–26·7) between 1990 and 2021. Age-standardised rates of deaths per 100 000 people attributed to these conditions decreased from 1990 to 2021 by 33·6% (27·6–38·8), and age-standardised rates of DALYs attributed to these conditions decreased by 27·0% (21·5–32·4). Age-standardised prevalence was almost stable, with a change of 1·5% (0·7–2·4). The ten conditions with the highest age-standardised DALYs in 2021 were stroke, neonatal encephalopathy, migraine, Alzheimer's disease and other dementias, diabetic neuropathy, meningitis, epilepsy, neurological complications due to preterm birth, autism spectrum disorder, and nervous system cancer.InterpretationAs the leading cause of overall disease burden in the world, with increasing global DALY counts, effective prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation strategies for disorders affecting the nervous system are needed
