    Effects of Teachers’ Praises on Elementary School Pupils’ Self-Esteem and School Adjustment

     教師による賞賛が子どもの自尊感情および学校生活への適応に及ぼす影響について検討す るため,小学校5,6年生を対象に,教師からのほめられ経験,自尊感情,学習意欲,学校 生活享受感情の4 種を調査内容とする調査を行った。教師からのほめられ経験については, 学習領域および生活領域の2領域14 項目から成る尺度を新たに作成した。「教師からのほめ られ経験 → 自尊感情 → 学習意欲・学校生活享受感情」を基本的な影響過程とし,収集し たデータに共分散構造分析を適用した。その結果,比較的高い適合度が得られ,教師からの ほめられ経験は,子どもの自尊感情,学習意欲,学校生活享受感情に影響を及ぼすとともに, 自尊感情を媒介して学習意欲および学校生活享受感情に影響を及ぼすことが示唆された。た だし,ほめられ経験の自尊感情への影響に関しては男女差があり,女子においてその影響性 が強いことが示された

    Reverse roll coating with a deformable roll operating at negative gaps

    YesReverse roll coating is probably the most widely used coating operation, yet its full potential has not been exploited as it is shown in this paper which considers operation with a negative gap. We demonstrate through a wide range of experimental data that such operation can yield very thin and stable films with no ribbing or cascade instabilities when low viscosity fluids are used. Typically, stable film thickness less than 5μm can be obtained at speeds up to 150 m/min when a rubber roller is used at -100 μm gap with fluids of viscosity in the range 10-200 mPa.s. These film thicknesses can be made to decrease further down to 1 or 2 microns with a judicious choice of speed ratios (applicator to metering roller) and rubber hardness. Such new findings make this simple coating method an attractive roll to roll technique for application in the newer coating technologies, such as in the production of solar cells and plastic electronics. The data obtained in this study have been underpinned by a model based on the classical lubrication theory, well developed for such flow situations. Essentially it is shown that the film thickness non dimensionalised with respect to the set negative gap is controlled through a single parameter, the elasticity number Ne which combines all the operating parameters. Of course, this flow problem has complexities, particularly at high speed ratios and at zero gap so the data obtained here can serve as a basis for more comprehensive modelling of this classical fluid mechanic problem.Films R&D Centre of Toyobo Co.     Brown Adipose Tissue PPARγ Is Required for the Insulin-Sensitizing Action of Thiazolidinediones

    Brown adipose tissue (BAT) plays a critical role in metabolic homeostasis. BAT dysfunction is associated with the development of obesity through an imbalance between energy expenditure and energy intake. The nuclear receptor peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARγ) is the master regulator of adipogenesis. However, the roles of PPARγ and thiazolidinediones (TZDs) in the regulation of BAT metabolism remain unclear. TZDs, which are selective PPARγ activators, improve systemic insulin resistance in animals and humans. In the present study, we generated brown adipocyte-specific PPARγ-deficient mice (BATγKO) to examine the in vivo roles of PPARγ and TZDs in BAT metabolism. In electron microscopic examinations, brown adipocyte-specific PPARγ deletion promoted severe whitening of brown fat and morphological alteration of mitochondria. Brown adipocyte-specific PPARγ deletion also reduced mRNA expression of BAT-selective genes. Although there was no difference in energy expenditure between control and BATγKO mice in calorimetry, norepinephrine-induced thermogenesis was impaired in BATγKO mice. Moreover, pioglitazone treatment improved diet-induced insulin resistance in the control mice but not in the BATγKO mice. These findings suggest that BAT PPARγ is necessary for the maintenance of brown adipocyte function and for the insulin-sensitizing action of TZDs

    Control of Vicinal Stereocenters through Nickel-Catalyzed Alkyl-Alkyl Cross-Coupling

    Vicinal stereocenters are found in many natural and unnatural compounds. Although metal-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions of unactivated alkyl electrophiles are emerging as a powerful tool in organic synthesis, there have been virtually no reports of processes that generate, much less control, vicinal stereocenters. In this investigation, we establish that a chiral nickel catalyst can mediate doubly stereoconvergent alkyl–alkyl cross-coupling, specifically, reactions of a racemic pyrrolidine-derived nucleophile with cyclic alkyl halides (as mixtures of stereoisomers) to produce vicinal stereocenters with very good stereoselectivity

    Impact of noncontrast PCI for ACS

    Purpose : Contrast-induced acute kidney injury (CI-AKI) is one of the common serious complications of percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS). This study aimed to assess the significance of noncontrast strategy in the setting of ACS. Methods : CI-AKI was defined as an increase in serum creatinine of ≥ 0.5 mg / dL or ≥ 1.25 times from the baseline. One-year worsening renal function (WRF) was defined as an increase of ≥ 0.3 mg / dL in serum creatinine from the baseline after PCI. Results : Of 250 ACS patients, 81 were treated with noncontrast PCI. The average doses of contrast medium in the noncontrast and conventional groups were 17 (9–22) ml and 150 (120–200) ml, respectively. CI-AKI was observed in 4 patients (5%) in the noncontrast group and 29 patients (17%) in the conventional group. Noncontrast PCI was associated with a lower incidence of CI-AKI (adjusted odds ratio, 0.26 ; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.08–0.82). The bootstrap method and inverse probability weighting led to similar results. CI-AKI was associated with a higher incidence of 1-year WRF (adjusted hazard ratio, 2.30 ; 95% CI, 1.12–4.69), while noncontrast PCI was not. Conclusions : Noncontrast PCI was associated with the lower incidence of CI-AKI in ACS patients

    The Japanese version of the Generalized Problematic Internet Use Scale 2 (GPIUS2): Psychometric evaluation and analysis of the theoretical model

    BACKGROUND: The Generalized Problematic Internet Use Scale 2 (GPIUS2) is a self-administered questionnaire that evaluates problematic internet use (PIU) from a multidimensional perspective. We analysed the psychometric properties and adequacy of the theoretical model of Japanese version of the GPIUS2. METHODS: This study included 291 healthy Japanese adults (median age = 25 years; interquartile range 22-43 years; 128 women) who completed the GPIUS2 and several other questionnaires evaluating the degree of PIU, self-esteem, depression, and impulsivity. RESULTS: Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) revealed a similar factor structure between the original and Japanese versions of the GPIUS2, with only minor differences in item composition. Higher-order confirmatory factor analyses revealed a good overall fit for the factorial model suggested by EFA, indicating adequate construct validity. The model showed acceptable internal consistency. Partial correlation analyses between GPIUS2 and other measures, with age as a control variable, revealed good convergent validity. Finally, structural equation modelling showed a good fit to the data, supporting the cognitive-behavioural model of Caplan (2010). CONCLUSIONS: The Japanese version of the GPIUS2 has good psychometric properties and the theoretical model of the original GPIUS2 is applicable to Japanese adults
