The aim of the study was to investigate associations between headache types and alcohol drinking, alcohol flushing, and hangover. Alcohol consumption is inhibited by the presence of inactive aldehyde dehydrogenase-2 (ALDH2) whose carriers are susceptible to alcohol flushing and hangovers. We conducted a cross-sectional study of the 2,577 subjects (men/women: 1,018/1,559) who reported having ever experienced headaches unrelated to common colds and alcohol hangovers among 5,408 (2,778/2,630) Tokyo health checkup examinees. We used a questionnaire inquiring about current and past facial flushing after drinking a glass of beer which identifies the presence of inactive ALDH2 with a sensitivity and specificity of approximately 90%. Based on ICHD-II criteria migraine was diagnosed in 419 (75/344) subjects, and tension-type headache (TTH) in 613 (249/364). We classified the headaches of the remaining 1,545 (694/851) of headaches sufferers into the category “other headaches (OH)”. The migraineurs drank alcohol less frequently than the subjects with TTH among current/past alcohol flushers and than the subjects with OH regardless of flushing category. No such difference in drinking frequency was observed between TTH and OH. Current/past flushers drank alcohol less frequently than never flushers, and the likelihood that male migraineurs would avoid alcohol drinking than men with TTH or OH was stronger among current/past flushers than among never flushers. Flushers and women were more susceptible to hangover than never flushers and men, respectively, regardless of headache type. Among never flushers, women with migraine were more susceptible to hangover than women with OH. The difference in alcohol sensitivity may partly explain less alcohol consumption by migraineurs

Myasthenia gravis (MG) patients visiting outpatient clinics frequently complain of headache. However, there have been few reports on the relation between chronic headache and myasthenia gravis (MG). We aimed to investigate whether MG symptoms affect the development or worsening of chronic headache. Among the 184 MG patients who were followed at the MG clinics, tension-type headache was observed in 71 (38.6%) patients and 9 (4.9%) complained of migraine. Twenty-five (13.6%) complained that headache appeared or was exacerbated after the MG onset. The investigation into differences in the clinical characteristics of the MG patients showed that women tended to suffer from MG-associated headache more often than men. Logistic regression analyses revealed that female gender and mild ocular symptoms were independently predictive of headache associated with MG. Our results suggest that treatment of chronic headache should be required to improve the quality of life in MG patients

A 74-year-old woman underwent right hemicolectomy and partial ileal resection for ascending colon cancer with synchronous peritoneal metastasis. Histopathological examination showed moderately differentiated adenocarcinoma with mucinous component, pT4b N3 M1, and Stage IV. Postoperative chemotherapy comprising 36 courses of mFOLFOX6 with bevacizumab was administered. Twenty-two months after the surgery, computed tomography (CT) revealed a 20 mm nodular lesion adjacent to the gastric wall, and laparoscopic resection of the nodule was performed. Thirty-nine months after the second surgery, CT showed a 24 mm nodular lesion involving the liver parenchyma, and partial hepatectomy involving the nodule was performed. Histopathological examination of the nodules resected by the second and third surgeries showed the same features as the primary ascending colon cancer. The nodules were diagnosed as metachronous peritoneal metastases. The patient followed up without chemotherapy after the second and third surgery, showed no recurrence for 26 months after the third surgery. Fortunately, more than 7 years have passed since the primary tumor resection. Hence, surgical resection for synchronous and repeated metachronous peritoneal oligometastases from colon cancer can offer long-term survival

ELECTRODIALYSIS PHENOMENA OF AQUEOUS SOLUTIONS CONTAINING PHOSPHORIC ACID AND METAL IONS

The electrodialysis phenomena of aqueous solutions containing phosphoric acid, Al and Mo ions were investigated in this study. A feasibility study of electrodialysis for treatment of waste phosphoric acid containing metal ions was also carried out. The desalination percentage of various ions shows different values through a kind of ion-exchange membrane. The voltage, solution concentration and feed temperature mainly affect electrodialysis of phosphoric acid containing Al and Mo ions. Higher voltage and feed temperature are beneficial for desalination of Al and Mo ions. At least 30% of Al ions and 7% of Mo ions can be removed from the phosphoric acid by using CMX/ AMX, CM1/ AM1 and CMX-SB/ ACS ion-exchange membranes. The electrodialysis process seems to be a promising one for use in treatment of waste phosphoric acid containing Al and Mo ions. This work was supported by the MEXT, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (A)(1),(17206091).CHEMICAL, ENERGY AND ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING, 50th anniversary editio

Effect of Paraquat-Induced Oxidative Stress on Insulin Regulation of Insulin-Like Growth Factor-Binding Protein-1 Gene Expression

Oxidative stress is thought to play a role in the development of insulin resistance. In order to elucidate the molecular effect of oxidative stress on liver insulin signaling, we analyzed the effect of paraquat (1,1-dimethyl-4,4-dipyridynium; PQ)-derived oxidative stress on the expression of insulin-dependent genes and activation of liver insulin signaling pathway. Incubation of primary cultured rat hepatocytes with 2 mM PQ for 6 h impaired the suppressive effect of insulin on insulin-like growth factor-binding protein-1 (IGFBP-1) gene expression, but did not influence glucose-6-phosphatase gene expression. Insulin-dependent phosphorylation or activation of insulin receptor, insulin receptor substrate-1 and -2, phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase, Akt and forkhead in rhabdomyosarcoma were not affected by PQ pre-treatment. In contrast, PQ treatment impaired insulin-dependent phosphorylation of mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR). These results indicate that PQ-induced oxidative stress impairs insulin-dependent mTOR activation and that this impairment probably causes inhibition of insulin-dependent repression of IGFBP-1 expression

Dispersion and Flocculation Behavior of Fine Metal Oxide Particles in Various Solvents

The objective of this study is to investigate the relation between the flocculation and dispersion of Al2O3, TiO2 and Fe2O3 particles and the properties of solvents such as dielectric constant and solubility parameters. The median diameter of these metal oxide perticles was measured in many organic solvents. The effect of the kind of solvent on the flocculation/dispersion behavior of metal oxide particles was evaluated from these results. Hansen\u27s solubility parameters with three dimensions were applied to the evaluation of the flocculation/dispersion behavior for fine metal oxide particles in organic solvents. The numeral balance among the Hansen\u27s solubility parameters of various solvents was plotted in a triangular chart, and then the points of solvents with similar median diameter of the particle were linked. In the triangular chart, these linked lines were not intersected each other and there was the specific point at which the best dispersibility of the particles was obtained.http://www.kona.or.jp/search/20_263.pd

The purpose of this study is to examine management issues stemming from community sports clubs’(CSCs)missions to encourage the participation of non-members. Therefore, this paper identifies the attitudes of non-members toward the missions of CSCs, non-members’ personal attributes, non-members’ awareness of CSCs, and non-members’ intentions to join CSCs. To do this, we conducted an online survey targeting non-members residing in Tokyo (n=1,996). The main findings are as follows: 1) Non-members do not understand the missions of clubs and they do not feel any empathy toward or have any expectations of clubs’ missions; 2) in particular, it is difficult for CSCs to obtain non-member understanding, sympathy, or expectations of missions around sports promotion and regional promotion; 3) in contrast, as understanding, empathy, and expectations of missions become higher, non-member intentions to join CSCs are enhanced; 4) the attitudes of non-members to missions differ depending on their personal attributes. Among other things, high awareness of CSCs was shown to stipulate understanding, sympathy and expectations of their missions. In conclusion, this study revealed that enhancing the understanding, empathy and expectations of CSCs’ missions is an important management task for encouraging non-members to join the clubs
