Managerial Challenges in Addressing HIV/AIDS: Gujarat State AIDS Control Society (GSACS)

The spread of HIV/AIDS is not merely a problem of public health; it is also an economic, political, and social challenge that threatens to hinder decades of progress in different parts of Gujarat. There is an urgent need to significantly scale-up public health interventions that work to make a meaningful impact. While NGOs and community based organizations have a critical role to play in implementing these interventions amongst the various population groups, the government must shoulder the overall responsibility for planning, coordinating, mobilizing, and facilitating the various HIV/AIDS prevention, care and treatment services in the state. Generally, the departments of HIV/AIDS are dominated by doctor-managers who lack training in management. This working paper was developed with objective of enhancing the skills of the program implementers. In this paper, in first three chapters we describe the overall situation of HIV/AIDS globally and nationally. Major challenges in managing sentinel surveillance, behavior surveillance, targeted interventions and its subcomponents have been described in chapter four. Issues related to integration of HIV/AIDS activities with reproductive health has also been discussed in the chapter. In chapter five, we present a few case studies from Gujarat State AIDS Control Society. These cases focus on the managerial issues in the following areas: Project Management, Blood Bank Management, VCTC/ICTC Management, Behavioral Surveillance and MIS for Targeted Interventions. These case studies bring out the ground level realities and can help participants develop insights for better management of the HIV/AIDS programme.

Service Learning is a powerful form of experiential pedagogy that is gaining popularity in classrooms from preprimary settings through graduate school. It involves students in activities that explicitly and intentionally integrate community involvement with appropriate academic objectives. Sport for development: An integrated literature review

Despite the significant increase of published research in sport-for-development (SFD), to date there have been no attempts to rigorously review and synthesize scholarly contributions in this area. To address this issue, we conducted an integrative review of SFD literature to portray an overarching and holistic picture of the field. Through a comprehensive literature analysis following Whittemore and Knafl's (2005) five-step process, we provide evidence of the status quo of current SFD research foci, authorship, geographical contexts, theoretical frameworks, sport activity, level of development, methodologies, methods, and key research findings. Our study shows an increasing trend of journal publications since 2000, with a strong focus on social and educational outcomes related to youth sport and with football (soccer) as the most common activity. A large majority of SFD research has been conducted at the community level, where qualitative approaches are dominant. The geographical contexts of authorship and study location present an interesting paradox: Although the majority of SFD projects are carried out in Africa, Asia, and Latin America, 90% of SFD authors are based in North America, Europe, and Australia. We conclude our study by providing new perspectives on key issues in SFD and by outlining current research and theoretical gaps that provide the basis for future scholarly inquiry

Preliminary Results for Embankment Dam Stepped Spillway Stilling Basin Research

A stilling basin is an energy dissipator for spillways and other hydraulic structures. Designed to generate a hydraulic jump, the structure is meant to contain the jump and return excess flow safely downstream. Traditional design for these structures was developed by United States Bureau of Reclamation (USBR) scientists. Tests were conducted for a range of expected flow conditions (i.e. Froude number, incoming flow depth, tailwater depth, etc.) with a smooth chute providing the incoming flow conditions. A common question among practicing engineers has become: is the stilling basin design criteria applicable if the approach entrance is a stepped chute? Scientists at the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Agricultural Research Service (ARS) Hydraulic Engineering Research Unit (HERU) has developed a research program to evaluate the stilling basin performance associated with stepped chutes. Physical model tests are conducted in a near prototype scale stepped chute facility. Stilling basin Types I, II, III, and IV are being tested. Preliminary results indicate the Froude number at the stepped chute toe ranges from 3.3 ≤ F ≤ 5.5. Hydraulic jumps within this Froude number range were observed to be oscillatory in nature and result in potentially undesirable wave action downstream of the stilling basin for the lower Froude numbers. Preliminary results indicate that the design criteria developed by USBR scientists are applicable for USBR Type IV stilling basins placed at the toe of stepped chutes. Within the next decade, however, the number of civil rights cases filed in the district courts had risen to 6,133 in 1972, a dramatic percentage increase of 1,972. The only area of civil litigation in the federal courts registering a higher tally in 1972 was the closely related area of prisoner petitions. Comparison of Prices for \u27Organic\u27 and \u27Conventional\u27 Grains and Soybeans in the Northern Great Plains and Upper MIdwest: 1995-2000

Price premiums for organic crops drew the attention of increasing numbers of farmers in the Northern Great Plains and Upper Midwest during the 1990s. Continuing low prices for crops grown with \u27conventional\u27 farming methods during the late 1990s caused a growing number of farmers to explore the possibilities of switching to organic methods and obtaining organic certification. As part of the sustainable agriculture research program in the Economics Department at South Dakota State University (SDSU), we have been comparing \u27organic\u27 and \u27conventional\u27 crop prices over the past six years.
