    Infertility has become a common occurrence in males. Oxidant stress has become one of the most common causes of infertility. X-irradiation, or exposure to environmental toxicants and the physical conditions of varicocele and cryptorchidism have been demonstrated to increase testicular oxidative stress. The resultant oxidant stress may lead to an increase in germ cell apoptosis and subsequent hypospermatogenesis. This may result in changes in the dynamics of testicular microvascular blood flow, endocrine signaling, and germ cell apoptosis. Oxidative stress, therefore, becomes a major and the most probable finding associated with male infertility. This raises a possibility of application of antioxidant therapy that could help alleviate the reduced spermatogenesis

    A novel mathematical model of activation and sensitization of platelets subjected to dynamic stress histories

    Abstract Blood recirculating devices, such as ventricular assist devices and prosthetic heart valves, are burdened by thromboembolic complications requiring complex and lifelong anticoagulant therapy with its inherent hemorrhagic risks. Pathologic flow patterns occurring in such devices chronically activate platelets, and the optimization of their thrombogenic performance requires the development of flow-induced platelet activation models. However, existing models are based on empirical correlations using the wellestablished power law paradigm of constant levels of shear stress during certain exposure times as factors for mechanical platelet activation. These models are limited by their range of application and do not account for other relevant phenomena, such as loading rate dependence and platelet sensitization to high stress conditions, which characterize the dynamic flow conditions in devices. These limitations were addressed by developing a new class of phenomenological stress-induced platelet activation models that specifies the rate of platelet activation as a function of the entire stress history and results in a differential equation that can be directly integrated to calculate the cumulative levels of activation. The proposed model reverts to the power law under constant shear stress conditions and is able to describe experimental results in response to a diverse range of highly dynamic stress conditions found in blood recirculating devices. The model was tested in vitro under emulated device flow conditions and correlates well with experimental results. This new model provides a reliable and robust mathematical tool that can be incorporated into computational fluid dynamic studies in order to optimize design, with the goal of improving the thrombogenic performance of blood recirculating devices

    Myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPN), which overproduce blood cells in the bone marrow, have recently been linked with a genetically determined decrease in expression of the MYB transcription factor. Here, we use a mouse MYB knockdown model with an MPN-like phenotype to show how lower levels of MYB lead to stem cell characteristics in myeloid progenitors. The altered progenitor properties feature elevated cytokine responsiveness, especially to IL-3, which results from increased receptor expression and increased MAPK activity leading to enhanced phosphorylation of a key regulator of protein synthesis, ribosomal protein S6. MYB acts on MAPK signaling by directly regulating transcription of the gene encoding the negative modulator SPRY2. Ten consecutive patients with cardiogenic shock were graded using the Society of Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions shock classification and treated with CRP apheresis. All patients tolerated CRP apheresis well and were discharged in good clinical condition

    Cleavage furrow forming and position in animal cells is highly dependent on the position of mitotic spindle as is shown by many studies. There is evidence that external pressure has an important role in defining the position of mitotic spindle which determines the axis of division. It is being hypothesised that the extracellular pressure which compresses the divided cell membrane has a pivotal role in formation of cleavage furrow and determining its position. It is likely this due to the pressure difference between the inside and outside the cell created during anaphase as a result of precise highly ordered cellular processes. As a result of this difference, the resulting force will compreess the middle of the cell membrane from the outside, causing polarization of actin units and cytokinesis

    Superconductor strip with transport current: Magneto-optical study of current distribution and its relaxation

    The dynamics of magnetic flux distributions across a YBaCuO strip carrying transport current is measured using magneto-optical imaging at 20 K. The current is applied in pulses of 40-5000 ms duration and magnitude close to the critical one, 5.5 A. During the pulse some extra flux usually penetrates the strip, so the local field increases in magnitude. When the strip is initially penetrated by flux, the local field either increases or decreases depending both on the spatial coordinate and the current magnitude. Meanwhile, the current density always tends to redistribute more uniformly.     In predicate encryption, a ciphertext is associated with descriptive attribute values x in addition to a plaintext μ, and a secret key is associated with a predicate f. Decryption returns plaintext μ if and only if f(x)=1. Moreover, security of predicate encryption guarantees that an adversary learns nothing about the attribute x or the plaintext μ from a ciphertext, given arbitrary many secret keys that are not authorized to decrypt the ciphertext individually. We construct a leveled predicate encryption scheme for all circuits, assuming the hardness of the subexponential learning with errors (LWE) problem.     Post-Partum Pituitary Insufficiency and Livedo Reticularis Presenting a Diagnostic Challenge in a Resource Limited Setting in Tanzania: A Case Report, Clinical Discussion and Brief Review of Existing Literature.

    Pituitary disorders following pregnancy are an important yet under reported clinical entity in the developing world. Conversely, post partum panhypopituitarism has a more devastating impact on women in such settings due to high fertility rates, poor obstetric care and scarcity of diagnostic and therapeutic resources available. A 37 year old African female presented ten years post partum with features of multiple endocrine deficiencies including hypothyroidism, hypoadrenalism, lactation failure and secondary amenorrhea. In addition she had clinical features of an underlying autoimmune condition. These included a history of post-partum thyroiditis, alopecia areata, livedo reticularis and deranged coagulation indices. A remarkable clinical response followed appropriate hormone replacement therapy including steroids. This constellation has never been reported before; we therefore present an interesting clinical discussion including a brief review of existing literature. Post partum pituitary insufficiency is an under-reported condition of immense clinical importance especially in the developing world. A high clinical index of suspicion is vital to ensure an early and correct diagnosis which will have a direct bearing on management and patient outcome

    Deniable Attribute Based Encryption for Branching Programs from LWE

    Deniable encryption (Canetti et al. CRYPTO \u2797) is an intriguing primitive that provides a security guarantee against not only eavesdropping attacks as required by semantic security, but also stronger coercion attacks performed after the fact. The concept of deniability has later demonstrated useful and powerful in many other contexts, such as leakage resilience, adaptive security of protocols, and security against selective opening attacks. Despite its conceptual usefulness, our understanding of how to construct deniable primitives under standard assumptions is restricted. In particular from standard lattice assumptions, i.e. Learning with Errors (LWE), we have only flexibly and non-negligible advantage deniable public-key encryption schemes, whereas with the much stronger assumption of indistinguishable obfuscation, we can obtain at least fully sender-deniable PKE and computation. How to achieve deniability for other more advanced encryption schemes under standard assumptions remains an interesting open question. In this work, we construct a flexibly bi-deniable Attribute-Based Encryption (ABE) scheme for all polynomial-size Branching Programs from LWE. Our techniques involve new ways of manipulating Gaussian noise that may be of independent interest, and lead to a significantly sharper analysis of noise growth in Dual Regev type encryption schemes. We hope these ideas give insight into achieving deniability and related properties for further, advanced cryptographic systems from lattice assumptions

    Factors influencing consumer wine choice: The case of wine tourism

    This research was undertaken to examine the relationship between the wine tourism activities of consumers and their subsequent wine choices. Exploratory research was undertaken giving specific attention to wine tourism, first, as a factor of influence on decision-making, second, on levels of consumer involvement and third on long-term consumer loyalty. A convenience sample of 12 wine consumers in Dublin participated in the study. Semi-structured in-depth interviews were used to gather the qualitative data used. The findings clearly establish links made by consumers between their wine tourism experiences and their subsequent wine purchase preferences. The findings highlight the importance of facilitating the co-creation of memorable wine tourism experiences as a determinant of improved consumer involvement as well as the development of long-term consumer loyalty. Implications for industry practitioners suggest a continued focus on the provision of unique wine tourism experiences; while the findings support the theoretical links between consumers own past experiences and their use as a valuable information source when making purchase decisions
