    Implementing Social Emotional Activities into the English Language Arts Curriculum

    Over the last decade social emotional learning has revealed itself to be an important element in students\u27 academic growth. Social emotional learning requires students to learn the skills necessary to effectively communicate with others as well as maintaining a positive classroom environment, where all students feel supported, safe and heard. When students become more connected to their own emotions, they are developing an essential skill that will help them inside and outside of the classroom. Research shows that implementation of social emotional lessons can improve both immediate and long-term social-emotional ability as well as academic growth. Despite this research, teachers have struggled to implement social emotional lessons into their classroom. The focus of this project is to show how social emotional learning can be seamlessly implemented into the English language arts curriculum. This paper provides strategies/lessons to achieve this objective. During English language arts instruction, providing lessons that encourage whole group discussion, collaboration, metacognitive thinking strategies, and emotional literacy, will help students improve their social emotional skills. Additionally, they are becoming more connected to the literature by developing their tier 2 vocabulary and deepening their understanding of characters’ emotions within a story. The English language arts curriculum provides natural opportunities to support students in the area of social emotional learning and combining these is the missing piece for academic growth

    El presente estudio de prefactibilidad tiene como objetivo determinar la viabilidad de mercado, técnica, social y económica para la instalación de una planta de producción de un snack a base del alga Chondracanthus chamissoi reforzado con Spirulina platensis. La principal motivación del proyecto es aportar a la mejoría de ciertos indicadores de salud, relacionados con la malnutrición en el Perú, específicamente la alta prevalencia de anemia, sobrepeso y obesidad, al ofrecer un alimento de tipo snack bajo en calorías y alto en hierro. Dentro de las principales metas del Ministerio de Salud del Perú (MINSA), destaca la urgencia por reducir los índices de anemia en el país. Esto va de la mano con la oportunidad de negocio encontrada, que se desarrollará en ocho capítulos y determinarán la viabilidad del proyecto. El acto de consumir snacks se ha convertido en un hábito para satisfacer antojos sin cubrir necesidades nutricionales. Se espera crear un sustituto que concilie el sabor característico de los alimentos de este tipo con la buena nutrición. En consecuencia, se pretende desarrollar la industria peruana para el procesamiento de productos marinos y alimentos saludables.The objective of this pre-feasibility study is to determine the market, technical, social and economic feasibility for the installation of a production plant for a snack made of the algae Chondracanthus chamissoi reinforced with Spirulina platensis. The main motivation of the project is to contribute to the improvement of certain health indicators, related to malnutrition in Peru, specifically the high prevalence of anemia, overweight and obesity, by offering a snack food type low in calories and high in iron. Among the main goals of the Peruvian Ministry of Health (MINSA), the urgency to reduce anemia rates in the country stands out. This goes hand in hand with the business opportunity found, which will be developed in eight chapters and will determine the viability of the project. The act of consuming snacks has become a habit to satisfy cravings without covering nutritional needs. It is hoped to create a substitute that reconciles the characteristic flavor of foods of this type with good nutrition. Consequently, it is intended to develop the Peruvian industry for the processing of marine products and healthy foods

    The hallmark of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) is the abnormal activity of p210(Bcr-Abl) kinase. Selective kinase inhibitors such as imatinib or nilotinib have been established successfully for the treatment of CML. Despite high rates of clinical response, CML patients can develop resistance to these kinase inhibitors mainly due to point mutations within the Abl kinase domain of the fusion protein. Previously, we reported that a crude extract of the mushroom Daedalea gibbosa inhibited kinase activity of Bcr-Abl kinase. Here we report on the identification of the active component of Daedalea gibbosa, oleic acid, which inhibited Bcr-Abl kinase autophosphorylation in Ba/F3 cells and exhibited anti-CML activity in a BCR/ABL-positive mouse model

    Brain Mechanisms of Virtual Reality Breathing Versus Traditional Mindful Breathing in Pain Modulation: Observational Functional Near-infrared Spectroscopy Study

    BackgroundPain is a complex experience that involves sensory-discriminative and cognitive-emotional neuronal processes. It has long been known across cultures that pain can be relieved by mindful breathing (MB). There is a common assumption that MB exerts its analgesic effect through interoception. Interoception refers to consciously refocusing the mind’s attention to the physical sensation of internal organ function. ObjectiveIn this study, we dissect the cortical analgesic processes by imaging the brains of healthy subjects exposed to traditional MB (TMB) and compare them with another group for which we augmented MB to an outside sensory experience via virtual reality breathing (VRB). MethodsThe VRB protocol involved in-house–developed virtual reality 3D lungs that synchronized with the participants’ breathing cycles in real time, providing them with an immersive visual-auditory exteroception of their breathing. ResultsWe found that both breathing interventions led to a significant increase in pain thresholds after week-long practices, as measured by a thermal quantitative sensory test. However, the underlying analgesic brain mechanisms were opposite, as revealed by functional near-infrared spectroscopy data. In the TMB practice, the anterior prefrontal cortex uniquely modulated the premotor cortex. This increased its functional connection with the primary somatosensory cortex (S1), thereby facilitating the S1-based sensory-interoceptive processing of breathing but inhibiting its other role in sensory-discriminative pain processing. In contrast, virtual reality induced an immersive 3D exteroception with augmented visual-auditory cortical activations, which diminished the functional connection with the S1 and consequently weakened the pain processing function of the S1. ConclusionsIn summary, our study suggested two analgesic neuromechanisms of VRB and TMB practices—exteroception and interoception—that distinctively modulated the S1 processing of the ascending noxious inputs. This is in line with the concept of dualism (Yin and Yang)

    Diabetic neuropathy (DN) is a multifactor complication of diabetes. It is a late finding in type 1 diabetes, but can be an early finding in type 2 diabetes. The cause of DN is still unclear and, like other complications of diabetes, it may be the result of various pathological conditions. Animal models and biomarkers of DN have been extensively used in neuropathic research. The most useful model of DN should exhibit the key feature present in human pathology. Diabetic rodents show behavioral, functional, structural and molecular biomarkers and they are widely used as models to investigate the etiology of DN as well as to screen the efficacy of the potential therapeutic interventions.
