    Parameters for Systems Exhibiting Local Lattice Distortions, Charge and Spin Ordering

    Keeping in mind the experimental results that indicate local lattice distortions, charge and spin orderings, we have developed a phenomenological approach which allows us to describe the electronic phase diagram of cuprates and related systems in terms of few parameters.In the present work we consider a third-order parameter theory which characterize charge, spin and superconductivity orderings. We are thus led to a theory of three scalar fields. By coupling these scalars to gauge fields we are naturally led to string-like solutions, which we interpret as stripes. This ties nicely with our quantum group conjecture that 1d systems play an important role in the physics of cuprates and related materials. We show that this simple approach can give rough values for two-order parameters which can be naively be interpreted as charge and spin orderings. We also report our attempt to understand how local lattice distortions are involved and what role they play in terms of these two order parameters.Comment: 8 pages revtex, Published in AIP Conference Proceedings 554: Int.     SET based experiments for HTSC materials: II

    The cuprates seem to exhibit statistics, dimensionality and phase transitions in novel ways. The nature of excitations [i.e. quasiparticle or collective], spin-charge separation, stripes [static and dynamics], inhomogeneities, psuedogap, effect of impurity dopings [e.g. Zn, Ni] and any other phenomenon in these materials must be consistently understood. In this note we further discuss our original suggestion of using Single Electron Tunneling Transistor [SET] based experiments to understand the role of charge dynamics in these systems. Assuming that SET operates as an efficient charge detection system we can expect to understand the underlying physics of charge transport and charge fluctuations in these materials for a range of doping. Experiments such as these can be classed in a general sense as mesoscopic and nano characterization of cuprates and related materials. In principle such experiments can show if electron is fractionalized in cuprates as indicated by ARPES data. In contrast to flux trapping experiments SET based experiments are more direct in providing evidence about spin-charge separation.     Ethnobotanical evaluation of some plant resources in Northern part of Pakistan

    An ethnobotanical study on the medicinal and economic plants of Malam Jabba valley, District Swat was conducted with the aims of documenting the inventory of medicinal plants, examinining the current status of the medicinal plants trade and investigating the linkages in the market chain starting from collectors to consumers. The survey reported 50 species of plants belonging to 33 families as ethnobotanically important. These species are used as drugs for treating diseases in traditional system of medicine. The detailed local uses, recipe preparation along with their local names and diseases treated were recorded for each species. Market survey revealed that the structure of medicinal plant trade is complex and heterogeneous, involving many players. The collectors are often not aware of the high market prices and medicinal values, and most of the collected material is sold to local middlemen at a very low price. There was an increase of 3 to 5 folds in prices from collectors to the national market. Training in sustainable harvesting and post harvesting of wild medicinal plant resource, trade monitoring, equitable sharing of benefits of wild resources, improved control on harvesting and trade for the conservation of resources, enhancement of cultivation efforts, future research into trade in wild harvested plants, community participation in natural resource management and value addition in the herbal products to maximize the benefits are recommended

    Pharmaceutically important plants used in traditional system of Arab medicine for the treatment of livestock ailments in the kingdom of Saudi Arabia

    A study on the pharmaceutical importance of some medicinal pants used for the treatment of livestock ailments was conducted during summer 2010 in different parts of Saudi Arabia, where no such study has been conducted so far. The aim of the study was to identify and document the medicinal plants used for the treatment of different livestock ailment in the traditional system of Arab medicine. Ethnoveterinary information was collected through the show-and-tell/semi-structured method and personal interviews during field trips. The methodology is largely based on the Sustainable Livelihood Framework, which is based on the premise that livelihood is not about resource productivity but it is about people and their lives. The study revealed 24 plants species of ethno-veterinary importance. These were used for the curing of various livestock ailments such as gastrointestinal disorders, fever, cough, respiratory tract infection, urinary tract diseases, promote lactation, wound healing, placenta removal, deworming, carminative, paralysis and flatulence in Arab system of medicine. Some plants were used singly while many others were used in combination with other plants or edible items. Similarly, few plants species are considered for the treatment of only one specific disease while several other have multiple such uses. The detail local uses, local recipe preparation, application and disease treated were reported for each species. The study concluded that, the medicinal plant knowledge of the people is strongly influenced by Arab system of traditional medicine and that medicinal plants have exerted and continue to exert, a strong influence on the standardization of plant knowledge among rural populations in Saudi Arabi. However, distinct local use of plants also exists; indicating that plant knowledge specific to the local Badous is alive and practiced. The study recommends scientific validity and toxicity tests of the medicinal plants used in traditional Arab system of medicine.Key Words: Medicinal plants, livestock, diseases, traditional system of medicine, local recipes

    Prescription Patterns of Antidepressants: The Effect of the Black Box Warning among Pediatric Patients

    Introduction: Our aim was to investigate the prescription patterns of antidepressant in the southern Israel during the years 2000 to 2005, before and after the FDA black box warning issued regarding the prescription of antidepressants in children. Patients and methods: A cross sectional study. Data regarding prescription of anti-depressant drugs was examined retrospectively. All information was obtained from the computerized databases of the Clalit Health care services, southern county. Data was analyzed by using descriptive statistics, and analytical statistics. Multi-variate analysis was performed when applicable.Results: When comparing the prescription rate of fluoxetine and fluvoxamine versus other SSRI’s included in the health agencies warnings during the years mentioned, there was a gradual increase in the percentage of the other SSRI’s until 2003 from 12.2% in 2000 to 64.2% in 2003 and then a reversal of this trend from 51.9% in 2004 to 47.8% in 2005.Discussion and conclusions: This study shows that the CSM advice has not had a significant effect in reversing the rising prevalence of antidepressant prescribed to children and adolescents in primary care. It has however changed the choice of antidepressant medication chosen within the group of SSRI’s

    Phylogenetic Study of Indian Collembolan: an Evaluation in Uttar Pradesh

    Springtails (Collembola) from the largest of the three lineages of modern hexapods that are no longer considered insects (the other two are the Protura and Diplura). Although the three orders are sometimes grouped together in a class called Entognatha because they have internal mouthparts, they do not appear to be any more closely related to one another than they all are to insects, which have external mouthparts. Collembolans are omnivorous, free-living organisms that prefer moist conditions. They do not directly engage in the decomposition of organic matter but contribute to it indirectly through the fragmentation of organic matter and the control of soil microbial communities. The word "Collembola" is from the ancient Greek "Glue" and "Peg"; this name was given due to the existence of the collophore, which was previously thought to stick to surfaces in order to stabilize the insect.
