Cross-cultural evidence does not support universal acceleration of puberty in father-absent households
Father absence in early life has been shown to be associated with accelerated reproductive development in girls. Evolutionary social scientists have proposed several adaptive hypotheses for this finding. Though there is variation in the detail of these hypotheses, they all assume that family environment in early life influences the development of life-history strategy, and, broadly, that early reproductive development is an adaptive response to father absence. Empirical evidence to support these hypotheses, however, has been derived from WEIRD (Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich and Democratic) populations. Data from a much broader range of human societies are necessary in order to properly test adaptive hypotheses. Here, we review the empirical literature on father absence and puberty in both sexes, focusing on recent studies that have tested this association beyond the WEIRD world. We find that relationships between father absence and age at puberty are more varied in contexts beyond WEIRD societies, and when relationships beyond the father-daughter dyad are considered. This has implications for our understanding of how early-life environment is linked to life-history strategies, and for our understanding of pathways to adult health outcomes, given that early reproductive development may be linked to negative health outcomes in later life. The factorial representation of balanced labelled graphs
AbstractConsider a graph G with m edges and m+1 vertices. Label the vertices of G from 0 to m. Label each edge with the positive difference of its end labels. If these edge labels take on the values from 1 to m, the graph is said to be properly labelled. If, in addition, the end labels x,y of each edge satisfy x ⩽ r < y for some fixed integer r, the proper labelling is balanced. We introduce sequences of integers to represent properly labelled graphs. Using these sequences, we count balanced labelled graphs as well as a subclass of these which possess symmetry
A Survey for Outer Satellites of Mars: Limits to Completeness
We surveyed the Hill sphere of Mars for irregular satellites. Our search
covered nearly the entire Hill Sphere, but scattered light from Mars excluded
the inner few arcminutes where the satellites Phobos and Deimos reside. No new
satellites were found to an apparent limiting red magnitude of 23.5, which

Extreme Kuiper Belt Object 2001 QG298 and the Fraction of Contact Binaries
Extensive time-resolved observations of Kuiper Belt object 2001 QG298 show a
lightcurve with a peak-to-peak variation of 1.14 +-0.04 magnitudes and
single-peaked period of 6.8872 +- 0.0002 hr. The mean absolute magnitude is
6.85 magnitudes which corresponds to a mean effective radius of 122 (77) km if
an albedo of 0.04 (0.10) is assumed. This is the first known Kuiper Belt object
and only the third minor planet with a radius > 25 km to display a lightcurve
with a range in excess of 1 magnitude. We find the colors to be typical for a
Kuiper Belt object (B-V = 1.00 +- 0.04, V-R = 0.60 +- 0.02) with no variation
in color between minimum and maximum light. The large light variation,
relatively long double-peaked period and absence of rotational color change
argue against explanations due to albedo markings or elongation due to high
angular momentum. Instead, we suggest that 2001 QG298 may be a very close or
contact binary similar in structure to what has been independently proposed for
the Trojan asteroid 624 Hektor. If so, its rotational period would be twice the
lightcurve period or 13.7744 +- 0.0004 hr. By correcting for the effects of
projection, we estimate that the fraction of similar objects in the Kuiper Belt
is at least 10% to 20% with the true fraction probably much higher. A high
abundance of close and contact binaries is expected in some scenarios for the

A Wide-Field CCD Survey for Centaurs and Kuiper Belt Objects
A modified Baker-Nunn camera was used to conduct a wide-field survey of 1428
square degrees of sky near the ecliptic in search of bright Kuiper Belt objects
and Centaurs. This area is an order of magnitude larger than any previously
published CCD survey for Centaurs and Kuiper Belt Objects. No new objects
brighter than red magnitude m=18.8 and moving at a rate 1"/hr to 20"/hr were
discovered, although one previously discovered Centaur 1997 CU26 Chariklo was
serendipitously detected. The parameters of the survey were characterized using
both visual and automated techniques. From this survey the empirical projected
surface density of Centaurs was found to be SigmaCentaur(m<18.8)=7.8(+16.0
-6.6)x10^-4 per square degree and we found a projected surface density 3sigma
upper confidence limit for Kuiper Belt objects of SigmaKBO(m< 18.8)<4.1x10^-3
per square degree. We discuss the current state of the cumulative luminosity
functions of both Centaurs and Kuiper Belt objects. Through a Monte Carlo
simulation we show that the size distribution of Centaurs is consistent with a
q=4 differential power law, similar to the size distribution of the parent
Kuiper Belt Objects. The Centaur population is of order 10^7 (radius > 1 km)
assuming a geometric albedo of 0.04. About 100 Centaurs are larger than 50 km
in radius, of which only 4 are presently known. The current total mass of the
Centaurs is 10^-4 Earth Masses. No dust clouds were detected resulting from
Kuiper Belt object collisions, placing a 3sigma upper limit <600 collisionally

Extracellular phosphate enhances the function of F508del-CFTR rescued by CFTR correctors
Background: The clinical response to cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) modulators varies between people with cystic fibrosis (CF) of the same genotype, in part through the action of solute carriers encoded by modifier genes. Here, we investigate whether phosphate transport by SLC34A2 modulates the function of F508del-CFTR after its rescue by CFTR correctors. Methods: With Fischer rat thyroid (FRT) cells heterologously expressing wild-type and F508del-CFTR and fully-differentiated CF and non-CF human airway epithelial cells, we studied SLC34A2 expression and the effects of phosphate on CFTR-mediated transepithelial ion transport. F508del-CFTR was trafficked to the plasma membrane by incubation with different CFTR correctors (alone or in combination) or by low temperature. Results: Quantitative RT-PCR demonstrated that both FRT and primary airway epithelial cells express SLC34A2 mRNA and no differences were found between cells expressing wild-type and F508del-CFTR. For both heterologously expressed and native F508del-CFTR rescued by either VX-809 or C18, the magnitude of CFTR-mediated Cl(−) currents was dependent on the presence of extracellular phosphate. However, this effect of phosphate was not detected with wild-type and low temperature-rescued F508del-CFTR Cl(−) currents. Importantly, the modulatory effect of phosphate was observed in native CF airway cells exposed to VX-445, VX-661 and VX-770 (Trikafta) and was dependent on the presence of both sodium and phosphate. Conclusions: Extracellular phosphate modulates the magnitude of CFTR-mediated Cl(−) currents after F508del-CFTR rescue by clinically-approved CFTR correctors. This effect likely involves electrogenic phosphate transport by SLC34A2. It might contribute to inter-individual variability in the clinical response to CFTR correctors

Genomic landscapes of divergence among island bird populations: Evidence of parallel adaptation but at different loci?
When populations colonise new environments, they may be exposed to novel selection pressures but also suffer from extensive genetic drift due to founder effects, small population sizes and limited interpopulation gene flow. Genomic approaches enable us to study how these factors drive divergence, and disentangle neutral effects from differentiation at specific loci due to selection. Here, we investigate patterns of genetic diversity and divergence using whole‐genome resequencing (>22× coverage) in Berthelot's pipit (Anthus berthelotii), a passerine endemic to the islands of three north Atlantic archipelagos. Strong environmental gradients, including in pathogen pressure, across populations in the species range, make it an excellent system in which to explore traits important in adaptation and/or incipient speciation. First, we quantify how genomic divergence accumulates across the speciation continuum, that is, among Berthelot's pipit populations, between sub species across archipelagos, and between Berthelot's pipit and its mainland ancestor, the tawny pipit (Anthus campestris). Across these colonisation timeframes (2.1 million–ca. 8000 years ago), we identify highly differentiated loci within genomic islands of divergence and conclude that the observed distributions align with expectations for non‐neutral divergence. Characteristic signatures of selection are identified in loci associated with craniofacial/bone and eye development, metabolism and immune response between population comparisons. Interestingly, we find limited evidence for repeated divergence of the same loci across the colonisation range but do identify different loci putatively associated with the same biological traits in different populations, likely due to parallel adaptation. Incipient speciation across these island populations, in which founder effects and selective pressures are strong, may therefore be repeatedly associated with morphology, metabolism and immune defence
