Detonation interaction with an interface
Detonation interaction with an interface was investigated, where the interface separated a combustible from an oxidizing or inert mixture. The ethylene-oxygen combustible mixture had a fuel-rich composition to promote secondary combustion with the oxidizer in the turbulent mixing zone (TMZ) that resulted from the interaction. Sharp interfaces were created by using a nitro-cellulose membrane to separate the two mixtures. The membrane was mounted on a wood frame and inserted in the experimental test section at a 45° angle to the bulk flow direction. The membrane was destroyed by the detonation wave. The interaction resulted in a transmitted and reflected wave at a node point similar to regular shock refraction. A detonation refraction analysis was carried out to compare with the measured shock angles. It was observed that the measured angle is consistently lower than the predicted value. An uncertainty analysis revealed possible explanations for this systematic variation pointing to factors such as the incident wave curvature and the role of the nitro-cellulose diaphragm. Analysis of the TMZ and Mach stem formed from the reflection of the transmitted shock wave off the solid boundary were carried out and found to justify the size and strength of these features as a function of the test gas composition. The role of secondary combustion in the TMZ was also investigated and found to have a small influence on the wave structure
Regional Unemployment Disparities.
In this paper we examine the nature of disparities in regional (State) unemployment rates in Australia over the period 1978-1999 and their relationship to the national unemployment rate. As a measure of dispersion we use the sum of the (weighted) deviations of regional unemployment rates from the national rate. We show that this figure may be interpreted as the number of new jobs or labour force movements that would be needed to even out unemployment rates between regions, expressed as a proportion of the total number currently employed in all regions. Using co-integration analysis, we find that there is a (long-run) relationship between the degree of dispersion in the regional unemployment rates and the level of the national unemployment rate. The relationship between the two is negative implying that, as the national unemployment rate falls, micro and/or differentiated labour markets policies need to bite harder (and affect proportionately more people) if equity in unemployment across regions is to be maintained. We also find that the trade-off between dispersion and unemployment has become steeper in the period following significant deregulation of the Australian economy in the early Nineteen-Eighties. It would appear likely that this reflects an increase in differences in the Natural Rate of Unemployment between the regions since that time.UNEMPLOYMENT ; REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Coupled Cluster Channels in the Homogeneous Electron Gas
We discuss diagrammatic modifications to the coupled cluster doubles (CCD)
equations, wherein different groups of terms out of rings, ladders,
crossed-rings and mosaics can be removed to form approximations to the coupled
cluster method, of interest due to their similarity with various types of
random phase approximations. The finite uniform electron gas is benchmarked for
14- and 54-electron systems at the complete basis set limit over a wide density
range and performance of different flavours of CCD are determined. These
results confirm that rings generally overcorrelate and ladders generally
undercorrelate; mosaics-only CCD yields a result surprisingly close to CCD. We
use a recently developed numerical analysis [J. J. Shepherd and A. Gr\"uneis,
Phys. Rev. Lett. 110, 226401 (2013)] to study the behaviours of these methods
in the thermodynamic limit. We determine that the mosaics, on forming the
Brueckner Hamltonian, open a gap in the effective one-particle eigenvalues at
the Fermi energy. Numerical evidence is presented which shows that methods
based on this renormalisation have convergent energies in the thermodynamic
limit including mosaic-only CCD, which is just a renormalised MP2. All other
methods including only a single channel, namely ladder-only CCD, ring-only CCD
and crossed-ring-only CCD, appear to yield divergent energies; incorporation of

A universally programmable Quantum Cellular Automaton
We discuss the role of classical control in the context of reversible quantum
cellular automata. Employing the structure theorem for quantum cellular
automata, we give a general construction scheme to turn an arbitrary cellular
automaton with external classical control into an autonomous one, thereby
proving the computational equivalence of these two models. We use this
technique to construct a universally programmable cellular automaton on a

Flash Point and Chemical Composition of Aviation Kerosene (Jet A)
The relationship between chemical composition, flash point, and ignition energy was examined for eight samples of aviation kerosene (Jet A) with flash points between 29°C (84°F) and 74°C (165°F). We report the results of liquid characterization by two different laboratories. We use the results of headspace gas chromatography carried out by Woodrow and Seiber to characterize the vapor composition at liquid mass loading fractions of 3 and 400 kg/m^3. The composition data were analyzed to obtain analytical representations of vapor pressure and average molar mass as a function of temperature for each flash point fuel. The relationship between composition and flash point is examined by using two prediction methods. The first method is based on the notion of a critical value of fuel-air mass ratio at the flammability limit. The second method is based on Le Chatelier's rule for flammability limits. Both methods show a reasonable correlation between measured and predicted flash point. The relationship between flash point and ignition temperature threshold at a fixed spark ignition energy was examined for four fuels. A linear correlation was obtained for an ignition energy of 0.3 J. The effect of fuel weathering was examined by determining the flashpoints of seven fuel samples obtained from flight tests. The flash point increased about 8°C for fuel that had been exposed to 5 take-off, cruise, and landing cycles
Towards a lightweight generic computational grid framework for biological research
Background: An increasing number of scientific research projects require access to large-scale computational resources. This is particularly true in the biological field, whether to facilitate the analysis of large high-throughput data sets, or to perform large numbers of complex simulations â a characteristic of the emerging field of systems biology. Results: In this paper we present a lightweight generic framework for combining disparate computational resources at multiple sites (ranging from local computers and clusters to established national Grid services). A detailed guide describing how to set up the framework is available from the following URL: http://igrid-ext.cryst.bbk.ac.uk/portal_guide/. Conclusion: This approach is particularly (but not exclusively) appropriate for large-scale biology projects with multiple collaborators working at different national or international sites. The framework is relatively easy to set up, hides the complexity of Grid middleware from the user, and provides access to resources through a single, uniform interface. It has been developed as part of the European ImmunoGrid project
Effect of low-frequency tones and turbulent-boundary-layer noise on annoyance
A laboratory study was conducted to examine annoyance to combinations of low-frequency tones and turbulent-boundary-layer noise. A total of 240 sounds, containing tones in the range from 80 to 315 Hz, were rated by 108 test subjects in an anechoic chamber. The results indicated that tone penalties (defines as the failure of a noise metric to account for the presence of pure tones) are highly dependent on the choice of noise metric. A-weighted sound pressure level underpredicted annoyance by as much as the equivalent of 5 db and unweighted sound pressure level overpredicted by as much as the equivalent of db. Tone penalties were observed to be dependent on the shape of the turbulent boundary-layer noise spectrum
The incidence and risk factors for new onset atrial fibrillation in the PROSPER study
Aims Atrial fibrillation/flutter (AF) is the most common arrhythmia in older people. It associates with reduced exercise capacity, increased risk of stroke, and mortality. We aimed to determine retrospectively whether pravastatin reduces the incidence of AF and whether any electrocardiographic measures or clinical conditions might be risk factors for its development. Methods and results The PROspective Study of Pravastatin in the Elderly at Risk (PROSPER) was a randomized, double-blind controlled trial that recruited 5804 individuals aged 70-82 years with a history of, or risk factors for, vascular disease. A total of 2891 were allocated to pravastatin and 2913 to placebo; mean follow-up was 3.2 years. Electrocardiograms (ECGs), which were recorded at baseline, annually thereafter, and at run-out, were processed by computer and reviewed manually. In all, 264 of 2912 (9.1%) of the placebo group and 283 of 2888 (9.8%) of the pravastatin-treated group developed AF [hazard ratio 1.08 (0.92,1.28), P = 0.35)]. Multivariate analysis showed that PR and QTc intervals, age, left ventricular hypertrophy, and ST-T abnormalities were related to development of AF after adjustment for many variables including alcohol consumption, which itself was univariately predictive of developing AF. Previous myocardial infarction on the ECG was not a risk factor. A history of vascular disease was strongly linked with developing AF but not diabetes and hypertension. Conclusion Pravastatin does not reduce the incidence of AF in older people at risk of vascular disease, at least in the short-medium term. Resolved CO(1-0) Nuclei in IRAS 14348-1447: Evidence for Massive Bulge Progenitors to Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies
High-resolution, CO(1-0) interferometry of the ultraluminous infrared galaxy
IRAS 14348-1447 is presented. The merger system has a molecular gas mass of
\~3x10^10 solar masses and a projected nuclear separation of 4.8 kpc (3.5"),
making it one of the most molecular gas-rich galaxies known and an ideal
candidate for studying the intermediate stages of an ultraluminous merger
event. The CO morphology shows two molecular gas components associated with the
stellar nuclei of the progenitors, consistent with the idea that the molecular
disks are gravitationally bound by the dense bulges of the progenitor galaxies
as the interaction proceeds. In contrast, less luminous infrared galaxies
observed to date with projected nuclear separations of ~<5 kpc show a dominant
CO component between the stellar nuclei. This discrepancy may be an indication
that the progenitors of mergers with lower infrared luminosity do not possess
massive bulges, and that the gas is stripped during the initial encounter of
their progenitors. A comparison of the CO and radio luminosities of the NE and
SW component show them to have comparable radio and CO flux ratios of
f(NE)/f(SW) ~0.6, possibly indicating that the amount of star-forming molecular
gas in the progenitors is correlated with the supernovae rate. The estimate of
molecular gas masses of the nuclei and the extent of the radio emission are
used to infer that the nuclei of IR 14348-1447 have gas densities comparable to

An Extended Radio Counterpart of TeV J2032+4130?
We carried out a 5-pointing mosaic observation of TeV J2032+4130 at 1.4 and
4.8 GHz with the VLA in April of 2003. The analysis of the 4.8GHz data indicate
weak wispy shell-like radio structure(s) which are at least partially
non-thermal. The radio data is compatible with one or more young supernova
remnants or perhaps the signature of large scale cluster shocks in this region
