    Building a 3.5 m prototype interferometer for the Q & A vacuum birefringence experiment and high precision ellipsometry

    We have built and tested a 3.5 m high-finesse Fabry-Perot prototype inteferometer with a precision ellipsometer for the QED test and axion search (Q & A) experiment. We use X-pendulum-double-pendulum suspension designs and automatic control schemes developed by the gravitational-wave detection community. Verdet constant and Cotton-Mouton constant of the air are measured as a test. Double modulation with polarization modulation 100 Hz and magnetic-field modulation 0.05 Hz gives 10^{-7} rad phase noise for a 44-minute integration.Comment: This draft has been presented in the 5th Edoardo Amaldi Conference on Gravitational Wave

    Geochemistry of reduced inorganic sulfur, reactive iron, and organic carbon in fluvial and marine surface sediment in the Laizhou Bay region, China

    Understanding the geochemical cycling of sulfur in sediments is important because it can have implications for both modern environments (e.g., deterioration of water quality) and interpretation of the ancient past (e.g., sediment C/S ratios can be used as indicators of palaeodepositional environment). This study investigates the geochemical characteristics of sulfur, iron, and organic carbon in fluvial and coastal surface sediments of the Laizhou Bay region, China. A total of 63 sediment samples were taken across the whole Laizhou Bay marine region and the 14 major tidal rivers draining into it. Acid volatile sulfur, chromium (II)-reducible sulfur and elemental sulfur, total organic carbon, and total nitrogen were present in higher concentrations in the fluvial sediment than in the marine sediment of Laizhou Bay. The composition of reduced inorganic sulfur in surface sediments was dominated by acid volatile sulfur and chromium (II)-reducible sulfur. In fluvial sediments, sulfate reduction and formation of reduced inorganic sulfur were controlled by TOC and reactive iron synchronously. High C/S ratios in the marine sediments indicate that the diagenetic processes in Laizhou Bay have been affected by rapid deposition of sediment from the Yellow River in recent decades

    The detection of lubricating oil viscosity changes in gearbox transmission systems driven by sensorless variable speed drives using electrical supply parameters

    Lubrication oil plays a decisive role to maintain a reliable and efficient operation of gear transmissions. Many offline methods have been developed to monitor the quality of lubricating oils. This work focus on developing a novel online method to diagnose oil degradation based on the measurements from power supply system to the gearbox. Experimental studies based on an 10kW industrial gearbox fed by a sensorless variable speed drive (VSD) shows that measurable changes in both static power and dynamic behaviour are different with lube oils tested. Therefore, it is feasible to use the static power feature to indicate viscosity changes at low and moderate operating speeds. In the meantime, the dynamic feature can separate viscosity changes for all different tested cases

    The finite-temperature thermodynamics of a trapped unitary Fermi gas within fractional exclusion statistics

    We utilize a fractional exclusion statistics of Haldane and Wu hypothesis to study the thermodynamics of a unitary Fermi gas trapped in a harmonic oscillator potential at ultra-low finite temperature. The entropy per particle as a function of the energy per particle and energy per particle versus rescaled temperature are numerically compared with the experimental data. The study shows that, except the chemical potential behavior, there exists a reasonable consistency between the experimental measurement and theoretical attempt for the entropy and energy per particle. In the fractional exclusion statistics formalism, the behavior of the isochore heat capacity for a trapped unitary Fermi gas is also analyzed.Comment: 6 pages, 6 figure

    Nanosecond electro-optical switching with a repetition rate above 20MHz

    We describe an electro-optical switch based on a commercial electro-optic modulator (modified for high-speed operation) and a 340V pulser having a rise time of 2.2ns (at 250V). It can produce arbitrary pulse patterns with an average repetition rate beyond 20MHz. It uses a grounded-grid triode driven by transmitting power transistors. We discuss variations that enable analog operation, use the step-recovery effect in bipolar transistors, or offer other combinations of output voltage, size, and cost.Comment: 3 pages, 3 figures.     Optimization of 2-d lattice cellular automata for pseudorandom number generation

    This paper proposes a generalized approach to 2-d CA PRNGs – the 2-d lattice CA PRNG – by introducing vertical connections to arrays of 1-d CA. The structure of a 2-d lattice CA PRNG lies in between that of 1-d CA and 2-d CA grid PRNGs. With the generalized approach, 2-d lattice CA PRNG offers more 2-d CA PRNG variations. It is found that they can do better than the conventional 2-d CA grid PRNGs. In this paper, the structure and properties of 2-d lattice CA are explored by varying the number and location of vertical connections, and by searching for different 2-d array settings that can give good randomness based on Diehard test. To get the most out of 2-d lattice CA PRNGs, genetic algorithm is employed in searching for good neighborhood characteristics. By adopting an evolutionary approach, the randomness quality of 2-d lattice CA PRNGs is optimized. In this paper, a new metric, #rn is introduced as a way of finding a 2-d lattice CA PRNG with the least number of cells required to pass Diehard test. Following the introduction of the new metric #rn, a cropping technique is presented to further boost the CA PRNG performance.     Spin Bose-Metal and Valence Bond Solid phases in a spin-1/2 model with ring exchanges on a four-leg triangular ladder

    We study a spin-1/2 system with Heisenberg plus ring exchanges on a four-leg triangular ladder using the density matrix renormalization group and Gutzwiller variational wave functions. Near an isotropic lattice regime, for moderate to large ring exchanges we find a spin Bose-metal phase with a spinon Fermi sea consisting of three partially filled bands. Going away from the triangular towards the square lattice regime, we find a staggered dimer phase with dimers in the transverse direction, while for small ring exchanges the system is in a featureless rung phase.     High energy neutrino oscillation at the presence of the Lorentz Invariance Violation

    Due to quantum gravity fluctuations at the Planck scale, the space-time manifold is no longer continuous, but discretized. As a result the Lorentz symmetry is broken at very high energies. In this article, we study the neutrino oscillation pattern due to the Lorentz Invariance Violation (LIV), and compare it with the normal neutrino oscillation pattern due to neutrino masses. We find that at very high energies, neutrino oscillation pattern is very different from the normal one. This could provide an possibility to study the Lorentz Invariance Violation by measuring the oscillation pattern of very high energy neutrinos from a cosmological distance.Comment: 11 pages, 6 figure
