Phase diagram of the frustrated, spatially anisotropic S=1 antiferromagnet on a square lattice
We study the S=1 square lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet with spatially
anisotropic nearest neighbor couplings , frustrated by a
next-nearest neighbor coupling numerically using the density-matrix
renormalization group (DMRG) method and analytically employing the
Schwinger-Boson mean-field theory (SBMFT). Up to relatively strong values of
the anisotropy, within both methods we find quantum fluctuations to stabilize
the N\'{e}el ordered state above the classically stable region. Whereas SBMFT
suggests a fluctuation-induced first order transition between the N\'{e}el
state and a stripe antiferromagnet for and an
intermediate paramagnetic region opening only for very strong anisotropy, the
DMRG results clearly demonstrate that the two magnetically ordered phases are
separated by a quantum disordered region for all values of the anisotropy with
the remarkable implication that the quantum paramagnetic phase of the spatially
isotropic - model is continuously connected to the limit of
decoupled Haldane spin chains. Our findings indicate that for S=1 quantum
fluctuations in strongly frustrated antiferromagnets are crucial and not
correctly treated on the semiclassical level.Comment: 10 pages, 10 figure
Representations of hom-Lie algebras
In this paper, we study representations of hom-Lie algebras. In particular,
the adjoint representation and the trivial representation of hom-Lie algebras
are studied in detail. Derivations, deformations, central extensions and
derivation extensions of hom-Lie algebras are also studied as an application.Comment: 16 pages, multiplicative and regular hom-Lie algebras are used,

Complete bandgaps in one-dimensional left-handed periodic structures
Artificially fabricated structures with periodically modulated parameters
such as photonic crystals offer novel ways of controlling the flow of light due
to the existence of a range of forbidden frequencies associated with a photonic
bandgap. It is believed that modulation of the refractive index in all three
spatial dimensions is required to open a complete bandgap and prevent the
propagation of electromagnetic waves in all directions. Here we reveal that, in
a sharp contrast to what was known before and contrary to the accepted physical
intuition, a one-dimensional periodic structure containing the layers of
transparent left-handed (or negative-index) metamaterial can trap light in
three-dimensional space due to the existence of a complete bandgap.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure
Valosin-containing protein regulates the proteasome-mediated degradation of DNA-PKcs in glioma cells.
DNA-dependent protein kinase (DNA-PK) has an important role in the repair of DNA damage and regulates the radiation sensitivity of glioblastoma cells. The VCP (valosine-containing protein), a chaperone protein that regulates ubiquitin-dependent protein degradation, is phosphorylated by DNA-PK and recruited to DNA double-strand break sites to regulate DNA damage repair. However, it is not clear whether VCP is involved in DNA-PKcs (DNA-PK catalytic subunit) degradation or whether it regulates the radiosensitivity of glioblastoma. Our data demonstrated that DNA-PKcs was ubiquitinated and bound to VCP. VCP knockdown resulted in the accumulation of the DNA-PKcs protein in glioblastoma cells, and the proteasome inhibitor MG132 synergised this increase. As expected, this increase promoted the efficiency of DNA repair in several glioblastoma cell lines; in turn, this enhanced activity decreased the radiation sensitivity and prolonged the survival fraction of glioblastoma cells in vitro. Moreover, the VCP knockdown in glioblastoma cells reduced the survival time of the xenografted mice with radiation treatment relative to the control xenografted glioblastoma mice. In addition, the VCP protein was also downregulated in ~25% of GBM tissues from patients (WHO, grade IV astrocytoma), and the VCP protein level was correlated with patient survival (R(2)=0.5222, P<0.05). These findings demonstrated that VCP regulates DNA-PKcs degradation and increases the sensitivity of GBM cells to radiation
The detection of lubricating oil viscosity changes in gearbox transmission systems driven by sensorless variable speed drives using electrical supply parameters
Lubrication oil plays a decisive role to maintain a reliable and efficient operation of gear transmissions. Many offline methods have been developed to monitor the quality of lubricating oils. This work focus on developing a novel online method to diagnose oil degradation based on the measurements from power supply system to the gearbox. Experimental studies based on an 10kW industrial gearbox fed by a sensorless variable speed drive (VSD) shows that measurable changes in both static power and dynamic behaviour are different with lube oils tested. Therefore, it is feasible to use the static power feature to indicate viscosity changes at low and moderate operating speeds. In the meantime, the dynamic feature can separate viscosity changes for all different tested cases
The Diverse Infrared Properties of a Complete Sample of Star-Forming Dwarf Galaxies
We present mid-infrared Spitzer Space Telescope observations of a complete
sample of star-forming dwarf galaxies selected from the KPNO International
Spectroscopic Survey. The galaxies span a wide range in mid-infrared
properties. Contrary to expectations, some of the galaxies emit strongly at 8
micron indicating the presence of hot dust and/or PAHs. The ratio of this
mid-infrared dust emission to the stellar emission is compared with the
galaxies' luminosity, star-formation rate, metallicity, and optical reddening.
We find that the strength of the 8.0 micron dust emission to the stellar
emission ratio is more strongly correlated with the star-formation rate than it
is with the metallicity or the optical reddening in these systems. Nonetheless,
there is a correlation between the 8.0 micron luminosity and metallicity. The
slope of this luminosity-metallicity correlation is shallower than
corresponding ones in the B-band and 3.6 micron. The precise nature of the 8.0
micron emission seen in these galaxies (i.e., PAH versus hot dust or some
combination of the two) will require future study, including deep mid-IR
spectroscopy.Comment: 14 pages, accepted Ap
Organizing information on the next generation web - Design and implementation of a new bookmark structure
The next-generation Web will increase the need for a highly organized and ever evolving method to store references to Web objects. These requirements could be realized by the development of a new bookmark structure. This paper endeavors to identify the key requirements of such a bookmark, specifically in relation to Web documents, and sets out a suggested design through which these needs may be accomplished. A prototype developed offers such features as the sharing of bookmarks between users and groups of users. Bookmarks for Web documents in this prototype allow more specific information to be stored such as: URL, the document type, the document title, keywords, a summary, user annotations, date added, date last visited and date last modified. Individuals may access the service from anywhere on the Internet, as long as they have a Java-enabled Web browser
Threshold Resummation Effects in the Associated Production of Chargino and Neutralino at Hadron Colliders
We investigate the QCD effects in the associated production of the chargino
and the neutralino, and , in the Minimal
Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) at both the Fermilab Tevatron and the CERN
Large Hadron Collider (LHC). We include the next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD
corrections (including supersymmetric QCD) and the threshold resummation
effects. Our results show that, compared to the NLO predictions, the threshold
resummation effects can increase the total cross sections by 3.6% and 3.9% for
the associated production of and
at the LHC, respectively, and by 4.7% for
those of at the Tevatron. In the invariant
mass distributions the resummation effects are significant for large invariant
mass. The threshold resummation reduces the dependence of the total cross
sections at the LHC (Tevatron) on the renormalization/factorization scales to
5% (4%) from up to 7% (11%) at NLO.Comment: revised version with midifications, several references adde
