OPAL and More
We shall summarize some of the research activities performed in collaboration
with Ben Shen in the OPAL experiment at LEP and in the CMS experiment at the
LHC. And we shall recall the LEP legacy to particle physics in general and to
the Standard Model in particular. Short recollections are made in other fields
in which Ben was interested, in particular in Astroparticle Physics.Comment: Talk given at the Benjamin C. Shen Memorial Symposium, UCR, March 8,

Hidden Spoor, Ruan Xiaoxu, And His Treatise On Reclusion
In early medieval China great attention was paid to compiling accounts of men in reclusion, yet the prefaces to these compilations often contain only vague or stale reasoning concerning the nature of reclusion itself. A preface by Shen Yue (441-513) is a notable exception: Shen differentiated between disengagement and reclusion. A slightly later contemporary of Shen, Ruan Xiaoxu (479-536), took issue with him in a unique and tightly constructed disquisition on what Ruan saw as a basic dichotomy in the Way of man: the root and overt traces. Ruan\u27s overlooked treatise is examined here, as are some relevant facets of his life
Calculation of light nucleus reaction cross sections in Geant4
Total reaction cross sections of light projectile nucleus (H-2, H-3, He-3 and
He-4) interactions with nuclei are calculated using Geant4 models, and compared
with experimental data. It is shown that the models give various predictions at
low energies, in the region of the Coulomb barrier. "Shen model" (W.-Q. Shen et
al., Nucl. Phys. {\bf A491} (1989) 130) is identified as an improvement over
other models.Comment: 2 pages text, 8 figure
Fine recycled concrete aggregate as a material replacement in concrete production
As a fast and rapid growing nation, Malaysia undergoes a lot of development especially in construction field. Most of the building nowadays are being made mainly using concrete as it provides many favorable features such as satisfactory compressive strength, durability, availability, versatility and cost effectiveness. However, in pursuing the development era, sometimes the authorities overlooked about the construction and demolition (C&D) waste that had been created along the development progress. Construction and demolition waste is becoming a vital issue especially to the environmental aspect in many large cities in the world (Chen et al., 2002). Shen [1] describe C&D waste as the waste which generated from renovation, site clearing, demolition, construction, roadwork, land excavation and civil and building construction. Construction and Demolition (C&D) waste constitutes a major portion of total solid waste production in the world, and most of it is used in landfills .
Divide and Fuse: A Re-ranking Approach for Person Re-identification
As re-ranking is a necessary procedure to boost person re-identification
(re-ID) performance on large-scale datasets, the diversity of feature becomes
crucial to person reID for its importance both on designing pedestrian
descriptions and re-ranking based on feature fusion. However, in many
circumstances, only one type of pedestrian feature is available. In this paper,
we propose a "Divide and use" re-ranking framework for person re-ID. It
exploits the diversity from different parts of a high-dimensional feature
vector for fusion-based re-ranking, while no other features are accessible.
Specifically, given an image, the extracted feature is divided into
sub-features. Then the contextual information of each sub-feature is
iteratively encoded into a new feature. Finally, the new features from the same
image are fused into one vector for re-ranking. Experimental results on two
person re-ID benchmarks demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed
framework. Especially, our method outperforms the state-of-the-art on the
Market-1501 dataset.Comment: Accepted by BMVC201
Vernunft leeren und Körper beruhigen. Synkretismus im Begriff der Selbstregulation im 22. Kapitel des Chunqiu fanlu
The concept of shen èș«, meaning a person in all his or her physiological, psychological, and sociological aspects, is an important concept in Chinese philosophy. What the nature of shen is, and consequently how to maintain, regulate, and cultivate oneâs own body/self/ person, has been a prominent philosophical issue in China. This article examines how this issue was comprehended in Chapter 22, the âTong guo shenâ é ćèș« (âLinking the State and the Bodyâ) chapter, of the important Chinese philosophical compendium the Chunqiu fanlu æ„ç§çčéČ, traditionally ascribed to Dong Zhongshu èŁä»Čè (c. 179 to 104 BCE). This article follows and expands upon research conducted by Sarah Queen, who suggested that some of the chapters of the unit to which the âTong guo shenâ belongs are characterised by a syncretic approach and suggest familiarity with inner-cultivation techniques. This article particularly focuses on syncretism in the notion of selfregulation in the âTong guo shenâ chapter. It examines the core principles, values, concepts, and ideas of self-regulation in the context of the Chunqiu fanluâs earlier sources. Through an examination of texts and documents produced from the Spring and Autumn period to the end of the Eastern Han dynasty, this paper reconstructs the idea of self-regulation through a mutually corroborative philological and philosophical analysis. The purpose of this research is to contribute to our academic understanding of the concept of selfregulation in Chinese philosophy as well as of the nature of the Chunqiu fanlu in general. IĆĄÄitavanjem tekstova i dokumenata nastalih od Razdoblja proljeÄa i jeseni do kraja dinastije IstoÄni Han, Älanak rekonstruira ideju samoregulacije kroz meÄusobno potkrjepljujuÄe filoloĆĄke i filozofske analize.
