Magnetic control assembly qualification model
Fabrication and testing of the magnetic control assembly (MCA) are summarized. The MCA was designed as an add-on unit for certain existing components of the Nimbus and ERTS attitude control system. The MCA system consists of three orthogonal electromagnets; a magnetometer probe capable of sensing external fields in the X, Y, and Z axes; and the control electronics. An operational description of the system is given along with all major drawings and photographs. Manufacturing and inspection procedures are outlined and a chronological list of events is included with the fabrication summary
Resolvent Estimates in L^p for the Stokes Operator in Lipschitz Domains
We establish the resolvent estimates for the Stokes operator in
Lipschitz domains in , for . The result, in particular, implies that the Stokes operator in a
three-dimensional Lipschitz domain generates a bounded analytic semigroup in
for (3/2)-\varep < p< 3+\epsilon. This gives an affirmative answer to a
conjecture of M. Taylor.Comment: 28 page. Minor revision was made regarding the definition of the
Stokes operator in Lipschitz domain
Probing spin entanglement by gate-voltage-controlled interference of current correlation in quantum spin Hall insulators
We propose an entanglement detector composed of two quantum spin Hall
insulators and a side gate deposited on one of the edge channels. For an ac
gate voltage, the differential noise contributed from the entangled electron
pairs exhibits the nontrivial step structures, from which the spin entanglement
concurrence can be easily obtained. The possible spin dephasing effects in the
quantum spin Hall insulators are also included.Comment: Physics Letters A in pres
Symmetry of the Gap in Bi2212 from Photoemission Spectroscopy
In a recent Letter, Shen et al have detected a large anisotropy of the
superconducting gap in Bi2212, consistent with d-wave symmetry, from
photoemission spectroscopy. Moreover, they claim that the change in their
spectra as a function of aging is also consistent with such an intrepretation.
In this Comment, I show that the latter statement is not entirely correct, in
that the data as a function of aging are inconsistent with a d-wave gap but are
consistent with an anisotropic s-wave gap.Comment: 3 pages (Plain TeX with macros), plus 1 postscript figur
Quantum computing through electron propagation in the edge states of quantum spin Hall systems
We propose to implement quantum computing based on electronic spin qubits by
controlling the propagation of the electron wave packets through the helical
edge states of quantum spin Hall systems (QSHs). Specfically, two
non-commutative single-qubit gates, which rotate a qubit around z and y axes,
can be realized by utilizing gate voltages either on a single QSH edge channel
or on a quantum point contact structure. The more challenging two-qubit
controlled phase gate can be implemented through the on-demand capacitive
Coulomb interaction between two adjacent edge channels from two parallel QSHs.
As a result, a universal set of quantum gates can be achieved in an
all-electrical way. The fidelity and purity of the two-qubit gate are
calculated with both time delay and finite width of the wave packets taken into
consideration, which can reach high values with the existing high-quality
single electron source
Modeling of a Cantilever-Based Near-Field Scanning Microwave Microscope
We present a detailed modeling and characterization of our scalable microwave
nanoprobe, which is a micro-fabricated cantilever-based scanning microwave
probe with separated excitation and sensing electrodes. Using finite-element
analysis, the tip-sample interaction is modeled as small impedance changes
between the tip electrode and the ground at our working frequencies near 1GHz.
The equivalent lumped elements of the cantilever can be determined by
transmission line simulation of the matching network, which routes the
cantilever signals to 50 Ohm feed lines. In the microwave electronics, the
background common-mode signal is cancelled before the amplifier stage so that
high sensitivity (below 1 atto-Farad capacitance changes) is obtained.
Experimental characterization of the microwave probes was performed on
ion-implanted Si wafers and patterned semiconductor samples. Pure electrical or
topographical signals can be realized using different reflection modes of the
probe.Comment: 7 figure
Mice with enhanced macrophage angiotensin-converting enzyme are resistant to melanoma
Journal ArticleAngiotensin-converting enzyne (ACE) is a pepitdase responsible for the cleavage of angiotensin I and Several other peptides. Here, gene targeting was used to switch control of the ACE locus from the endogenous promoter to the macrophage-specific c-fms promoter. Challenge of these mice, called ACE 10/10, with the aggressive mouse melanoma cell line B16 showed that they are remarkably resistant to tumor growth
Densification and preservation of ceramic nanocrystalline character by spark plasma sintering
Spark plasma sintering is a hot pressing technique where rapid heating by dc electric pulses is used simultaneously with applied pressure. Thus, spark plasma sintering is highly suitable for rapid densification of ceramic nanoparticles and preservation of the final nanostructure. A considerable portion of the shrinkage during densification of the green compact of nanoparticles in the first and intermediate stages of sintering occurs during heating by particle rearrangement by sliding and rotation. Further densification to the final stage of sintering takes place by either plastic yield or diffusional processes. Full densification in the final stage of sintering is associated with diffusional processes only. Nanoparticle sliding and rotation during heating may also lead to grain coalescence, with much faster kinetics than normal grain growth at higher temperatures. Based on existing models for particle rearrangement and sliding, the contributions of these processes in conjunction with nanoparticle properties and process parameters were highlighted
