    Glycine/Glycolic acid based copolymers

    Glycine/glycolic acid based biodegradable copolymers have been prepared by ring-opening homopolymerization of morpholine-2,5-dione, and ring-opening copolymerization of morpholine-2,5-dione and glycolide. The homopolymerization of morpholine-2,5-dione was carried out in the melt at 200°C for 3 min using stannous octoate as an initiator, and continued at lower reaction temperatures (100-160°C) for 2-48 h. The highest yields (60%) and intrinsic viscosities ([] = 0.50 dL/g; DMSO, 25°C) were obtained after 3 min reaction at 200°C and 17 h at 130°C using a molar ratio of monomer and initiator of 1000. The polymer prepared by homopolymerization of morpholine-2,5-dione was composed of alternating glycine and glycolic acid residues, and had a glass transition temperature of 67°C and a melting temperature of 199°C. Random copolymers of glycine and glycolic acid were synthesized by copolymerization of morpholine-2,5-dione and glycolide in the melt at 200°C, followed by 17 h reaction at 130°C using stannous octoate as an initiator. The morphology of the copolymers varied from semi-crystalline to amorphous, depending on the mole fraction of glycolic acid residues incorporated

    Facilitators and Barriers to Prescribing PreExposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) for the Prevention of HIV

    Background: What is PrEP and who gets it? PrEP is the use of medication by individuals to prevent HIV contraction, approved in 2012 after demonstrating safety and efficacy in the iPrEx study and Partners PrEP2 trials. HIV infection risk is 92% lower in patients using PrEP. Truvada®, a combination of tenofovir and emtricitabine taken orally daily, is the only approved PrEP regimen and is intended to compliment other prevention strategies such as condoms. HIV negative-individuals at risk for exposure to HIV have been identified as men who have sex with men (MSM), IV drug users, heterosexuals who have unprotected sex with partners of unknown HIV status, and those in serodiscordant relationships. Barriers to PrEP Implementation PrEP is effective when patients adhere; however, both the medical community and some high-risk populations have been slow to adopt it as an HIV prevention strategy. Surveys have shown clinicians perceived barriers to PrEP such as adverse side effects, viral drug resistance, increased high-risk behavior, cost, and training. HIV in Vermont New diagnoses of HIV among Vermont residents has remained relatively stable over the last twenty years. Vermont CARES, a non-profit, offers free and anonymous HIV tests and in-person risk-reduction counseling.     Ionotropic receptors are tightly regulated by second messenger systems and are often present along with their metabotropic counterparts on a neuron\u27s plasma membrane. This leads to the hypothesis that the two receptor subtypes can interact, and indeed this has been observed in excitatory glutamate and inhibitory GABA receptors. In both systems the metabotropic pathway augments the ionotropic receptor response. However, we have found that the metabotropic GABAB receptor can suppress the ionotropic GABAA receptor current, in both the in vitro mouse retina and in human amygdala membrane fractions. Expression of amygdala membrane microdomains in Xenopus oocytes by microtransplantation produced functional ionotropic and metabotropic GABA receptors. Most GABAA receptors had properties of α‐subunit containing receptors, with ~5% having ρ‐subunit properties. Only GABAA receptors with α‐subunit‐like properties were regulated by GABAB receptors. In mouse retinal ganglion cells, where only α‐subunit‐containing GABAA receptors are expressed, GABAB receptors suppressed GABAA receptor currents. This suppression was blocked by GABAB receptor antagonists, G‐protein inhibitors, and GABAB receptor antibodies.     Design and performance testing of a monolithic nickel-based SiC catalyst for steam methane reforming

    Hydrogen is a highly promoted carbon-free energy carrier that has drawn significant attention recently due to its potential to decarbonise energy sector. More than three-quarters of hydrogen is currently produced via steam methane reforming (SMR), and nickel-based catalysts are used in most applications. Structured catalysts have been reported to be able to further improve catalyst performance as they can optimise heat and mass transfer, as well as prevent coke formation with its structural and textural proprieties. Silicon carbide (SiC) has excellent hardness, thermal conductivity, and chemical inertness, therefore is a promising material to develop structured nickel-based monolithic SiC catalysts for SMR. In this work, a structured monolithic catalyst support has been formed by a modified freeze-gelation method, initially starting from SiC powder, and nickel has been distributed to form a monolithic nickel-based catalyst by wet impregnation. The results showed that the catalysts can achieve thermodynamic equilibrium at 600 °C with a gas hourly space velocity (GHSV) of 10,000 h−1, while reaching a high methane conversion of 86% at 800 °C and GHSV value of 20,000 h−1 during the performance tests using low feeding concentration and low pressure. This is the first time SiC catalytic materials have had their performance demonstrated for SMR under realistic operating conditions

    s and d-wave symmetries of the solutions of the Eliashberg equations

    We examine the different possible symmetries of the superconducting gap obtained by solving the Eliashberg equations. We consider an electron-phonon interaction in a strong coupling scenario. The Coulomb pseudopotential plays the crucial role of providing the repulsion needed to favour the d-wave symmetry. But the key parameter that allows very anisotropic solutions even with very strong coupling is the small angular range of the interaction due to predominantly electron-phonon forward scattering that is found in the high-Tc superconductors. We find both s and d-wave solutions whose stability depends mainly on the angular range of the interaction.Comment: Uuencoded LaTeX file anf 6 Postscript figures (14 pages).     Milk Diets Influence Doxorubicin-Induced Intestinal Toxicity in Piglets

    Chemotherapy-induced gastrointestinal (GI) toxicity is a common adverse effect of cancer treatment. We used preweaned piglets as models to test our hypothesis that the immunomodulatory and GI trophic effects of bovine colostrum would reduce the severity of GI complications associated with doxorubicin (DOX) treatment. Five-day-old pigs were administered DOX (1 × 100 mg/m2) or an equivalent volume of saline (SAL) and either fed formula (DOX-Form, n = 9, or SAL-Form, n = 7) or bovine colostrum (DOX-Colos, n = 9, or SAL-Colos, n = 7). Pigs were euthanized 5 days after initiation of chemotherapy to assess markers of small intestinal function and inflammation. All DOX-treated animals developed diarrhea, growth deficits, and leukopenia. However, the intestines of DOX-Colos pigs had lower intestinal permeability, longer intestinal villi with higher activities of brush border enzymes, and lower tissue IL-8 levels compared with DOX-Form (all P &lt; 0.05). DOX-Form pigs, but not DOX-Colos pigs, had significantly higher plasma C-reactive protein, compared with SAL-Form. Plasma citrulline was not affected by DOX treatment or diet. Thus a single dose of DOX induces intestinal toxicity in preweaned pigs and may lead to a systemic inflammatory response. The toxicity is affected by type of enteral nutrition with more pronounced GI toxicity when formula is fed compared with bovine colostrum. The results indicate that bovine colostrum may be a beneficial supplementary diet for children subjected to chemotherapy and subsequent intestinal toxicity. </jats:p

Retailers use both short-term and long-term pricing strategies to optimize their market share. This study addresses several critical questions: (1) To what extent do retailers react to competitive price specials? (2) Do retailers alternate price specials of competing brands? and, (3) Can one identify stores or brands, that are price leaders or do retailers/brands set prices independently? We use cointegration analysis to estimate a model which allows us to study both the short- and the long-run dynamics of competitive prices within a single framework

    Many common and chronic diseases are influenced at some level by genetic variation. Research done in population genetics, specifically in the area of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) is critical to understanding human genetic variation. A key element in assessing role of a given SNP is determining if the variation is likely to result in change in function. The SNP Integration Tool (SNPit) is a comprehensive tool that integrates diverse, existing predictors of SNP functionality, providing the user with information for improved association study analysis. To evaluate the SNPit system, we developed an alternative gold standard to measure accuracy using sensitivity and specificity. The results of our evaluation demonstrated that our alternative gold standard produced encouraging results
