The purpose of this study was to compare strength and endurance differences in shoulder external and internal rotation torque ratios among four levels of school-aged baseball players, The subjects (N=97) were assessed the strength and endurance strength of shoulder internal and external rotation muscles with Kin Com dynamometer. The functional scapular plane of shoulder movement was used as the testing position, Strength development of IR and ER generally varied with school-aged increased, Comparing with adult pitchers, adolescence and pre-adolescence baseball pitchers had relatively weak shoulder external rotation muscles, especially after high repetition muscle contraction. In order to prevent shoulder injury in adolescence and pre-adolescence baseball throwers, muscle endurance in shoulder external rotators must be emphasized

A rare, highly aggressive primitive neuroectodermal tumor of the kidney: Case report and literature review

AbstractWe report a case of a 14-year-old boy who initially suffered from a sudden onset of abdominal pain for 2 weeks with a protrusive soft mass over the left upper abdomen. No obvious symptomatic symptoms or body weight loss were observed. However, early lung metastasis was detected after an initial computed tomographic examination. Even after we performed salvage en bloc resection of the huge retroperitoneal tumor after primary neoadjuvant chemotherapy, the final outcome was still poor. A diagnosis according to radiologic findings was uncharacteristic. Finally, a pathologic diagnosis based on histologic and immunohistochemical results revealed a rare renal peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor

Prenatal Diagnosis of Pulmonary Sequestration by Ultrasound and Magnetic Resonance Imaging

A 36-year-old multigravida, G2P1, underwent routine ultrasound scan at 22+1 weeks of gestation, which revealed a single normally growing fetus with left intrathoracic mass and left displacement of the cardiac apex. The left intrathoracic wedge-shaped hyperechogenic mass, measuring 32 × 25 mm in size, was situated at the lower portion of the left lung. A combination of color and power Doppler ultrasound allowed visualization of a vessel arising from the descending aorta, which supplied the mass. The diagnosis of extralobar pulmonary sequestration was made. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was also performed and revealed a well-defined mass with homogeneous high-signal intensity when compared with normal lung tissue in the left upper lung field, which was compatible with pulmonary sequestration. The pulmonary mass was followed up by color and power Doppler every 2 weeks. The peak velocity of 11.85 cm/sec and the diameter of the feeding artery of 1.19 mm gradually decreased and disappeared 8 weeks later. The intrathoracic mass disappeared 10 weeks later at 32+1 gestational weeks. Repeat MRI also revealed spontaneous regression of the mass in favor of resorption of sequestration. The fetus was delivered at 38+1 gestational weeks. A male newborn weighing 2,520 g was spontaneously delivered with an Apgar score of 8 at 1 minute and 9 at 5 minutes. In our patient, it is suggested that progressive decreases in the peak velocity of the feeding vessel heralded the spontaneous regression of pulmonary sequestration not associated with hydrops/hydrothorax

Resveratrol Impedes the Stemness, Epithelial-Mesenchymal Transition, and Metabolic Reprogramming of Cancer Stem Cells in Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma through p53 Activation

Cancer stem cells (CSCs) are able to self-renew and are refractory to cancer treatment. To investigate the effects of resveratrol on CSCs of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC), we employed a behavior selection strategy to isolate CSCs based on radioresistance, chemoresistance, and tumor sphere formation ability. These NPC CSCs displayed stem cell properties and underwent metabolic shift to predominately rely on glycolysis for energy supply. Intriguingly, we found that resveratrol turned off the metabolic switch, increased the reactive oxygen species (ROS) level, and depolarized mitochondrial membranes. These alterations in metabolism occurred concomitantly with the suppression of CSC properties including resistance to therapy, self-renewal capacity, tumor initiation capacity, and metastatic potential in NPC CSCs. We found that resveratrol impeded CSC properties through the activation of p53 and this effect could be reversed by knockdown of p53. Furthermore, resveratrol suppressed the stemness and EMT through reactivating p53 and inducing miR-145 and miR-200c, which were downregulated in NPC CSCs. In conclusion, we demonstrated that resveratrol employed the p53 pathway in regulating stemness, EMT, and metabolic reprogramming. Further investigation of the molecular mechanism of p53 activation by resveratrol may provide useful information for the development of novel therapies for cancer treatment through targeting to CSCs

    CHARACTERISTICS OF ASYMMETRIC HEADS

Calculations shows that asymmetric ring heads exhibit sharp field gradient for both the Hx and Hy field components at large inclination and low spacings. These characteristics can be exploited to improve bit density in longitudinal and vertical recording, respectively

When anything less than perfect isn't good enough:How parental and supervisor perfectionistic expectations determine fear of failure and employee creativity

    No full text
In the quest to get the best from those for whom they are responsible, some parents and managers seek or demand perfection. But do such expectations benefit the targets, in terms of their capacity for creativity? The present research examines how perfectionistic parental and supervisor expectations influence employees’ fear of failure and creativity; in particular, the authors propose that perfectionistic parental expectations promote a fear of failure, which undermines employee creativity later in life. In line with social cognitive theory, when perfectionistic supervisor expectations repeat and reinforce these early life experiences, the negative mechanism may be strengthened. Tests of the hypotheses rely on two time-lagged field studies in different cultures (214 U.S. employees, 276 supervisor–employee–parent triads from a Chinese organization) and show that the indirect effect of parents’ perfectionistic expectations on creativity, through fear of failure, is stronger when perfectionistic supervisor expectations are high. This study thus offers unique insights into how familial and work experiences can jointly affect a person's fear of failure and further creativity at work
