Coronary Artery Reperfusion
The effects of coronary artery reperfusion 3 hr after coronary occlusion on contractile function and the development of myocardial damage at 24 hr was studied experimentally. In 14 control and 6 reperfused dogs, relationships between epicardial ST segment elevation 15 min after coronary occlusion and myocardial creatine phosphokinase activity (CPK) and histologic appearance 24 hr later were examined. The electrocardiograms were recorded from 10 to 15 sites on the left ventricular epicardium and transmural samples for CPK and histology were obtained from the same sites where epicardial electrocardiograms had been recorded. An inverse relation existed between ST segment elevation (mv) 15 min after occlusion and log CPK activity (IU/ mg of protein) 24 hr later, log CPK = - 0.06ST + 1.26. In dogs subjected to coronary artery reperfusion, there was significantly less CPK depression (log CPK = - 0.01ST + 1.31, [P < 0.01]) than that expected from the control group. In the control group 97% of specimens showing ST segment elevations over 2 mv at 15 min showed abnormal histology 24 hr later. In contrast, in the reperfused group 43% of sites exhibiting elevated ST segment at 15 min showed abnormal histology 24 hr later. In six additional dogs it was shown that the paradoxical movement of the left ventricular wall could be reversed within 1 hr of perfusion. Therefore, by enzymatic and histologic criteria, as well as by functional assessment, coronary artery reperfusion 3 hr after occlusion resulted in salvage of myocardial tissue
Energy landscapes, ideal glasses, and their equation of state
Using the inherent structure formalism originally proposed by Stillinger and
Weber [Phys. Rev. A 25, 978 (1982)], we generalize the thermodynamics of an
energy landscape that has an ideal glass transition and derive the consequences
for its equation of state. In doing so, we identify a separation of
configurational and vibrational contributions to the pressure that corresponds
with simulation studies performed in the inherent structure formalism. We
develop an elementary model of landscapes appropriate to simple liquids which
is based on the scaling properties of the soft-sphere potential complemented
with a mean-field attraction. The resulting equation of state provides an
accurate representation of simulation data for the Lennard-Jones fluid,
suggesting the usefulness of a landscape-based formulation of supercooled
liquid thermodynamics. Finally, we consider the implications of both the
general theory and the model with respect to the so-called Sastry density and
the ideal glass transition. Our analysis shows that a quantitative connection
can be made between properties of the landscape and a simulation-determined
Sastry density, and it emphasizes the distinction between an ideal glass
transition and a Kauzmann equal-entropy condition.Comment: 11 pages, 3 figure

Relationship between Structure, Entropy and Diffusivity in Water and Water-like Liquids
Anomalous behaviour of the excess entropy () and the associated scaling
relationship with diffusivity are compared in liquids with very different
underlying interactions but similar water-like anomalies: water (SPC/E and
TIP3P models), tetrahedral ionic melts (SiO and BeF) and a fluid with
core-softened, two-scale ramp (2SRP) interactions. We demonstrate the presence
of an excess entropy anomaly in the two water models. Using length and energy
scales appropriate for onset of anomalous behaviour, the density range of the
excess entropy anomaly is shown to be much narrower in water than in ionic
melts or the 2SRP fluid. While the reduced diffusivities () conform to the
excess entropy scaling relation, for all the systems
(Y. Rosenfeld, Phys. Rev. A {\bf 1977}, {\it 15}, 2545), the exponential
scaling parameter, , shows a small isochore-dependence in the case of
water. Replacing by pair correlation-based approximants accentuates the
isochore-dependence of the diffusivity scaling. Isochores with similar
diffusivity scaling parameters are shown to have the temperature dependence of
the corresponding entropic contribution. The relationship between diffusivity,
excess entropy and pair correlation approximants to the excess entropy are very

Using airborne LiDAR Survey to explore historic-era archaeological landscapes of Montserrat in the eastern Caribbean
This article describes what appears to be the first archaeological application of airborne LiDAR survey to historic-era landscapes in the Caribbean archipelago, on the island of Montserrat. LiDAR is proving invaluable in extending the reach of traditional pedestrian survey into less favorable areas, such as those covered by dense neotropical forest and by ashfall from the past two decades of active eruptions by the Soufrière Hills volcano, and to sites in localities that are inaccessible on account of volcanic dangers. Emphasis is placed on two aspects of the research: first, the importance of ongoing, real-time interaction between the LiDAR analyst and the archaeological team in the field; and second, the advantages of exploiting the full potential of the three-dimensional LiDAR point cloud data for purposes of the visualization of archaeological sites and features
Molecular structural order and anomalies in liquid silica
The present investigation examines the relationship between structural order,
diffusivity anomalies, and density anomalies in liquid silica by means of
molecular dynamics simulations. We use previously defined orientational and
translational order parameters to quantify local structural order in atomic
configurations. Extensive simulations are performed at different state points
to measure structural order, diffusivity, and thermodynamic properties. It is
found that silica shares many trends recently reported for water [J. R.
Errington and P. G. Debenedetti, Nature 409, 318 (2001)]. At intermediate
densities, the distribution of local orientational order is bimodal. At fixed
temperature, order parameter extrema occur upon compression: a maximum in
orientational order followed by a minimum in translational order. Unlike water,
however, silica's translational order parameter minimum is broad, and there is
no range of thermodynamic conditions where both parameters are strictly
coupled. Furthermore, the temperature-density regime where both structural
order parameters decrease upon isothermal compression (the structurally
anomalous regime) does not encompass the region of diffusivity anomalies, as

The Lasting Effects of Growing up in a Military-Connected Home: A Qualitative Study of College-Aged American Military Kids
Being reared as a military kid is a unique experience shared by millions of children all over the world. This study seeks to understand the experiences shared by military kids and how those experiences change their perspectives, behaviours, and relationships. In the present phenomenological study, we conducted 21 in-depth, semi-structured qualitative interviews of college students who were reared as United States military kids (MKs). Using criterion sampling, the participants all met specific criteria, including experiencing deployment of their military parent as well as a minimum of 10 years of parental service during the MK’s lifetime. Interviews were tape-recorded, transcribed, and coded for analysis. Researchers reviewed the transcriptions to find common themes and meta-themes present in a majority of the interviews. Common themes centred around relationships with family, changes during childhood, and military presence in everyday life. Particular findings reported in the present article include demonstrated respect, military pride, military community commonality, anticipation of change, childhood instability, family dynamics, military terminology, adaptability, and an overall positive experience. These common themes are relevant for all involved in the care of military kids and their families, as they underline the unique perspective that MKs have about their childhood and their future
Tracing change in female genital mutilation/cutting: Shifting norms and practices among communities in Narok and Kisii counties, Kenya
In Kenya, there has been a steady and marked decline in the prevalence of female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C) but there is great variance in the prevalence of FGM/C across the country, with prevalence remaining high among certain ethnic groups such as Somali, Samburu, Kisii, and the Maasai. The objectives of this study were: 1) to explore whether and how unprogrammed factors or programmed FGM/C interventions (alternative rites of passage, legal and policy measures, religious-oriented approaches, promotion of girls’ education, intergenerational dialogues, use of rescue centers, and other undocumented approaches) influence community values deliberation in Narok and Kisii counties; 2) to assess what changes in FGM/C norms and practices have occurred in Narok and Kisii counties, and identify factors motivating these changes; and 3) to identify barriers to FGM/C abandonment in these key “hot spots,” and assess how, in light of empirical findings and theoretical models of behavior, intervention efforts might be optimized and coordinated to accelerate abandonment. The study clearly shows that norms and practices of FGM/C are not static even in these study areas. While there might not be widespread abandonment yet, people are reassessing norms and traditions in light of the current social climate. These changes may provide a useful starting point for intervention programs that seek to create dialogue and critical reflection on the practice of FGM/C in an effort to accelerate its abandonment
Exploring the nature and extent of normative change in FGM/C in Somaliland
More than 200 million girls and women alive today have undergone FGM/C across 30 countries in Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. While most affected countries have adopted legal frameworks prohibiting FGM/C, these have been varyingly effective in preventing the practice or significantly accelerating its abandonment. The success of programmatic interventions to address FGM/C has also been variable. One possible reason for the limited success of these initiatives is the neglect of the collectively held social norms underpinning the practice’s continuation. This study, conducted in 30 villages in Somaliland, aimed to investigate: 1) if the norms associated with FGM/C are consistent with a social coordination norm; 2) which norms—if any—are associated with different stages of readiness to change; 3) how, to what extent, and by whom the norms and practices are being contested or altered; and 4) if the stages of readiness to change are associated with gender, location (rural/urban), and generational differences
