Contests dataset
Data on each contestant, including: sex, residency status (resident/intruder), winner status (winner/loser), body length, body mass, maximum strike force, and number of strikes delivered during the contest
Contest behaviours and striking dataset
Data on which contests escalated to striking, how many strikes each contest included, how many strikes were not on the telson, and the first behaviour of each contest
Anderson&Patek2015_individuals_data
Using 196 museum specimens from 36 stomatopod species, we measured morphological and biomechanical data related to the 4-bar system in the raptorial appendage. These data are divided into two files: Anderson&Patek2015_individuals_data contains the PC scores and KT values for the 196 specimens measured. This data was used to construct the specimen-based morphospace in the manuscript
Anderson&Patek2015_species_data
Using 196 museum specimens from 36 stomatopod species, we measured morphological and biomechanical data related to the 4-bar system in the raptorial appendage. These data are divided into two files: Anderson&Patek2015_species_data contains species averages for Kinematic Transmission (KT) as well as average link lengths (Link1, Link 2, Link 3, and Link 4) and PC scores for the species (PC1-PC8). Note that in the manuscript, we divided links 1, 2 and 3 by link 4 for analyses
data.files
Description of the 4 data files:
All files are tables into a text files and are comma delimited.
The files “merus.txt” and “propodus.dactylus.txt” represent the superimposed coordinates for the raptorial appendages (the merus and the propodus/dactylus respectively). They include animal ID, appendage side, measurement replicates, centroid size, and X and Y coordinate for each landmarks and semi-landmarks.
The file “individuals.informations.txt” includes the animal ID, the sex, the animal total body length and the strike force. Some animals do not have a strike force and have “NA” instead.
The file “spring.contraction.data.txt” includes all the data relative to the spring section of the article. This is the sex of the animals, the spring force when maximally contracted, the spring stiffness, the animal total body length, the centroid size and the superimposed coordinate (X and Y) for each landmarks and semi-landmarks
data.files
Description of 3 data files and associated MatLab files. The data files are named "Field.behavior.data.txt", "Strike.data.txt", and "Lmaculata.raw.digitizing.data.xls". The 2 text files tab delimitated. A detailed description of "Field.behavior.data.txt" can be found in "Field.behavior.Description.txt" in the ReadMe file. A detailed description of the data files "Strike.data.txt" and "Lmaculata.raw.digitizing.data.xls" can be found in "Strike.data.Description" in the ReadMe file. The associated MatLab files are also described in the "Strike.data.Description" text file
