A competency framework for digital curation and data science

"Aligning Digital Preservation across Nations" was a full-day invitational workshop held in conjunction with the International Digital Curation Conference (IDCC) 2013 in Amsterdam on 14 January 2013. The workshop was designed to advance discussion and collective action for digital preservation across national boundaries, including plans and priorities for an Aligning National Approaches to Digital Preservation (ANADP) II conference to be held November 18-20, 2013, Barcelona, Spain, as well as strategies for establishing a sustainable social infrastructure for continuing events and activities. Participants were offered the opportunity to submit position papers in advance and then give short talks about those papers at the workshop. The position papers served as a foundation for further discussion and deliberation throughout the day

    Honored: 1997 Emily Russell Award

The Association of Christian Librarians in recognition of outstanding contribution to Christian librarianship awards the Emily Russel Award. The following article is a revision of the Emily Russel Award presentation made by Sheila Carib/om during the 1997 ACL Conference held at Northwestem College in St. Paul, Minnesota. In summary form, we have attempted to highlight the careers of the 1997 Emily Russel Award recipients

    Bi-invariant metrics on contactomorphism groups

Contact manifolds are odd-dimensional smooth manifolds endowed with a maximally non-integrable field of hyperplanes. They are intimately related to symplectic manifolds, i.e. even-dimensional smooth manifolds endowed with a closed non-degenerate 2-form. Although in symplectic topology a famous bi-invariant metric, the Hofer metric, has been studied since more than 20 years ago, it is only recently that some somehow analogous bi-invariant metrics have been discovered on the group of diffeomorphisms that preserve a contact structure. In this expository article I will review some constructions of bi-invariant metrics on the contactomorphism group, and how these metrics are related to some other global rigidity phenomena in contact topology which have been discovered in the last few years, in particular the notion of orderability (due to Eliashberg and Polterovich) and an analogue in contact topology (due to Eliashberg, Kim and Poltorovich) of Gromov's symplectic non-squeezing theorem.Comment: Expository article, written in occasion of the 5-th IST-IME meeting in S\~ao Paulo (July 2014) in honor of Prof. Orlando Lopes. On a curious variant of the SnS_n-module LienLie_n

We introduce a variant of the much-studied LieLie representation of the symmetric group SnS_n, which we denote by Lien(2).Lie_n^{(2)}. Our variant gives rise to a decomposition of the regular representation as a sum of {exterior} powers of modules Lien(2).Lie_n^{(2)}. This is in contrast to the theorems of Poincar\'e-Birkhoff-Witt and Thrall which decompose the regular representation into a sum of symmetrised LieLie modules. We show that nearly every known property of LienLie_n has a counterpart for the module Lien(2),Lie_n^{(2)}, suggesting connections to the cohomology of configuration spaces via the character formulas of Sundaram and Welker, to the Eulerian idempotents of Gerstenhaber and Schack, and to the Hodge decomposition of the complex of injective words arising from Hochschild homology, due to Hanlon and Hersh.Comment: 26 pages, 2 tables.
