Even Orientations and Pfaffian graphs
We give a characterization of Pfaffian graphs in terms of even orientations,
extending the characterization of near bipartite non--pfaffian graphs by
Fischer and Little \cite{FL}. Our graph theoretical characterization is
equivalent to the one proved by Little in \cite{L73} (cf. \cite{LR}) using
linear algebra arguments
An ALMA Dynamical Mass Estimate of the Proposed Planetary-mass Companion FW Tau C
Dynamical mass estimates down to the planet-mass regime can help to
understand planet formation. We present Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter
Array (ALMA) 1.3 mm observations of FW Tau C, a proposed ~10
planet-mass companion at ~330 au from the host binary FW Tau AB. We spatially
and spectrally resolve the accretion disk of FW Tau C in CO (2-1). By
modeling the Keplerian rotation of gas, we derive a dynamical mass of ~0.1
. Therefore, FW Tau C is unlikely a planet, but rather a low-mass star
with a highly inclined disk. This also suggests that FW Tau is a triple system
consisting of three ~0.1 stars.Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ
WL 17: A Young Embedded Transition Disk
We present the highest spatial resolution ALMA observations to date of the
Class I protostar WL 17 in the Ophiuchus L1688 molecular cloud complex,
which show that it has a 12 AU hole in the center of its disk. We consider
whether WL 17 is actually a Class II disk being extincted by foreground
material, but find that such models do not provide a good fit to the broadband
SED and also require such high extinction that it would presumably arise from
dense material close to the source such as a remnant envelope. Self-consistent
models of a disk embedded in a rotating collapsing envelope can nicely
reproduce both the ALMA 3 mm observations and the broadband SED of WL 17. This
suggests that WL 17 is a disk in the early stages of its formation, and yet
even at this young age the inner disk has been depleted. Although there are
multiple pathways for such a hole to be created in a disk, if this hole were
produced by the formation of planets it could place constraints on the
timescale for the growth of planetesimals in protoplanetary disks.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ
Even Orientations of Graphs: Part I
A graph G is 1-extendable if every edge belongs to at least one 1-factor. Let
G be a graph with a 1-factor F. Then an even F-orientation of G is an
orientation in which each F-alternating cycle has exactly an even number of
edges directed in the same fixed direction around the cycle.
In this paper, we examine the structure of 1-extendible graphs G which have
no even F-orientation where F is a fixed 1-factor of G. In the case of cubic
graphs we give a characterization. In a companion paper [M. Abreu, D. Labbate
and J. Sheehan. Even orientations of graphs: Part II], we complete this
characterization in the case of regular graphs, graphs of connectivity at least
four and k--regular graphs for . Moreover, we will point out a
relationship between our results on even orientations and Pfaffian graphs

An Explanation of the Very Low Radio Flux of Young Planet-mass Companions
We report Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) 1.3 mm
continuum upper limits for 5 planetary-mass companions DH Tau B, CT Cha B, GSC
6214-210 B, 1RXS 1609 B, and GQ Lup B. Our survey, together with other ALMA
studies, have yielded null results for disks around young planet-mass
companions and placed stringent dust mass upper limits, typically less than 0.1
M_earth, when assuming dust continuum is optically thin. Such low-mass gas/dust
content can lead to a disk lifetime estimate (from accretion rates) much
shorter than the age of the system. To alleviate this timescale discrepancy, we
suggest that disks around wide companions might be very compact and optically
thick, in order to sustain a few Myr of accretion yet have very weak
(sub)millimeter flux so as to still be elusive to ALMA. Our order-of-magnitude
estimate shows that compact optically-thick disks might be smaller than 1000
R_jup and only emit ~micro-Jy of flux in the (sub)millimeter, but their average
temperature can be higher than that of circumstellar disks. The high disk
temperature could impede satellite formation, but it also suggests that mid- to
far-infrared might be more favorable than radio wavelengths to characterize
disk properties. Finally, the compact disk size might imply that dynamical
encounters between the companion and the star, or any other scatterers in the
system, play a role in the formation of planetary-mass companions.Comment: Accepted for publication in A

High-throughput DNA sequencing to survey bacterial histidine and tyrosine decarboxylases in raw milk cheeses

The aim of this study was to employ high-throughput DNA sequencing to assess the incidence of bacteria with biogenic amine (BA; histamine and tyramine) producing potential from among 10 different cheeses varieties. To facilitate this, a diagnostic approach using degenerate PCR primer pairs that were previously designed to amplify segments of the histidine (hdc) and tyrosine (tdc) decarboxylase gene clusters were employed. In contrast to previous studies in which the decarboxylase genes of specific isolates were studied, in this instance amplifications were performed using total metagenomic DNA extracts.
Results
Amplicons were initially cloned to facilitate Sanger sequencing of individual gene fragments to ensure that a variety of hdc and tdc genes were present. Once this was established, high throughput DNA sequencing of these amplicons was performed to provide a more in-depth analysis of the histamine- and tyramine-producing bacteria present in the cheeses. High-throughput sequencing resulted in generation of a total of 1,563,764 sequencing reads and revealed that Lactobacillus curvatus, Enterococcus faecium and E. faecalis were the dominant species with tyramine producing potential, while Lb. buchneri was found to be the dominant species harbouring histaminogenic potential. Commonly used cheese starter bacteria, including Streptococcus thermophilus and Lb. delbreueckii, were also identified as having biogenic amine producing potential in the cheese studied. Molecular analysis of bacterial communities was then further complemented with HPLC quantification of histamine and tyramine in the sampled cheeses.
Conclusions
In this study, high-throughput DNA sequencing successfully identified populations capable of amine production in a variety of cheeses. This approach also gave an insight into the broader hdc and tdc complement within the various cheeses. Kilometric radiation power flux dependence on area of discrete aurora
Kilometer wavelength radiation, measured from distant positions over the North Pole and over the Earth's equator, was compared to the area of discrete aurora imaged by several low-altitude spacecraft. Through correlative studies of auroral kilometric radiation (AKR) with about two thousand auroral images, a stereoscopic view of the average auroral acceleration region was obtained. A major result is that the total AKR power increases as the area of the discrete auroral oval increases. The implications are that the regions of parallel potentials or the auroral plasma cavities, in which AKR is generated, must possess the following attributes: (1) they are shallow in altitude and their radial position depends on wavelength, (2) they thread flux tubes of small cross section, (3) the generation mechanism in them reaches a saturation limit rapidly, and (4) their distribution over the discrete auroral oval is nearly uniform. The above statistical results are true for large samples collected over a long period of time (about six months). In the short term, AKR frequently exhibits temporal variations with scales as short as three minutes (the resolution of the averaged data used). These fluctuations are explainable by rapid quenchings as well as fast starts of the electron cyclotron maser mechanism. There were times when AKR was present at substantial power levels while optical emissions were below instrument thresholds. A recent theoretical result may account for this set of observations by predicting that suprathermal electrons, of energies as low as several hundred eV, can generate second harmonic AKR. The indirect observations of second harmonic AKR require that these electrons have mirror points high above the atmosphere so as to minimize auroral light emissions. The results provide evidence supporting the electron cyclotron maser mechanism
