    Host specialization by Cotesia wasps (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) parasitizing species-rich Melitaeini (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae) communities in north-eastern Spain

    In order to investigate parasitoids of the genus Cotesia (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), larvae of a speciose group of butterflies, the tribe Melitaeini (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae), were collected from several sites in Catalonia, northern Spain, a region that harbours ten out of the 20 European species of Melitaeini. New information on the natural history of the butterflies is presented, and the structure of their communities and patterns of larval parasitism are described. On the basis of mtDNA sequence data (COI gene), microsatellite data (ten loci) and behavioural experiments, we recognize seven biologically distinct species of Cotesia parasitizing the Melitaeini communities within this relatively small geographical area. In particular, the notional species C. melitaearum and C. acuminata each represents a series of cryptic species with narrow host associations. The possibility of direct competition among the parasitoids and/or indirect interactions between butterflies mediated by Cotesia parasitoids is explored

    Pseudobulges in the Disk Galaxies NGC 7690 and NGC 4593

    We present Ks-band surface photometry of NGC 7690 (Hubble type Sab) and NGC 4593 (SBb). We find that, in both galaxies, a major part of the "bulge" is as flat as the disk and has approximately the same color as the inner disk. In other words, the "bulges" of these galaxies have disk-like properties. We conclude that these are examples of "pseudobulges" -- that is, products of secular dynamical evolution. Nonaxisymmetries such as bars and oval disks transport disk gas toward the center. There, star formation builds dense stellar components that look like -- and often are mistaken for -- merger-built bulges but that were constructed slowly out of disk material. These pseudobulges can most easily be recognized when, as in the present galaxies, they retain disk-like properties. NGC 7690 and NGC 4593 therefore contribute to the growing evidence that secular processes help to shape galaxies. NGC 4593 contains a nuclear ring of dust that is morphologically similar to nuclear rings of star formation that are seen in many barred and oval galaxies. The nuclear dust ring is connected to nearly radial dust lanes in the galaxy's bar. Such dust lanes are a signature of gas inflow. We suggest that gas is currently accumulating in the dust ring and hypothesize that the gas ring will starburst in the future.     Epitaxial (111) Films of Cu, Ni, and CuxNi_xNi_yonα−Al on {\alpha}-Al_2OO_3$(0001) for Graphene Growth by Chemical Vapor Deposition

    Films of (111)-textured Cu, Ni, and Cux_xNiy_y were evaluated as substrates for chemical vapor deposition of graphene. A metal thickness of 400 nm to 700 nm was sputtered onto a substrate of α−\alpha-Al2_2O3_3(0001) at temperatures of 250 C to 650 C. The films were then annealed at 1000 C in a tube furnace. X-ray and electron backscatter diffraction measurements showed all films have (111) texture but have grains with in-plane orientations differing by 60∘60^{\circ}. The in-plane epitaxial relationship for all films was [110]metal[110]_{metal}||[101ˉ0]Al2O3[10\bar{1}0]_{{Al}_{2}{O}_{3}}. Reactive sputtering of Al in O2_2 before metal deposition resulted in a single in-plane orientation over 97 % of the Ni film but had no significant effect on the Cu grain structure. Transmission electron microscopy showed a clean Ni/Al2_2O3_3 interface, confirmed the epitaxial relationship, and showed that formation of the 60∘60^{\circ} twin grains was associated with features on the Al2_2O3_3 surface. Increasing total pressure and Cu vapor pressure during annealing decreased the roughness of Cu and and Cux_xNiy_y films. Graphene grown on the Ni(111) films was more uniform than that grown on polycrystalline Ni/SiO2_2 films, but still showed thickness variations on a much smaller length scale than the distance between grains

    W(h)ither the academy? An exploration of the role of university social work in shaping the future of social work in Europe

    A controversial proposal to pilot the training of child protection social workers through an intensive work-based route in England is being supported and funded by the UK Government. Frontline, the brainchild of a former teacher, locates social work training within local authorities (‘the agency’) rather than university social work departments (‘the academy’) and has stimulated debate amongst social work academics about their role in shaping the direction of the profession. As a contribution to this debate, this paper explores the duality of social work education, which derives its knowledge from both the academic social sciences and the experience of practice within social work agencies. While social work education has traditionally been delivered by the academy, this paper also explores whether the delivery of training in the allied professions of probation and nursing by ‘the agency’ is equally effective. Finally, this paper explores the Helsinki model which achieves a synergy of ‘academy’ and ‘agency’. It suggests that there are alternative models of social work education, practice and research which avoid dichotomies between the ‘academy’ and the ‘agency’ and enable the profession to be shaped by both social work academics and practitioners

    The Dynamics of Sustained Reentry in a Loop Model with Discrete Gap Junction Resistance

    Dynamics of reentry are studied in a one dimensional loop of model cardiac cells with discrete intercellular gap junction resistance (RR). Each cell is represented by a continuous cable with ionic current given by a modified Beeler-Reuter formulation. For RR below a limiting value, propagation is found to change from period-1 to quasi-periodic (QPQP) at a critical loop length (LcritL_{crit}) that decreases with RR. Quasi-periodic reentry exists from LcritL_{crit} to a minimum length (LminL_{min}) that is also shortening with RR. The decrease of Lcrit(R)L_{crit}(R) is not a simple scaling, but the bifurcation can still be predicted from the slope of the restitution curve giving the duration of the action potential as a function of the diastolic interval. However, the shape of the restitution curve changes with RR.Comment: 6 pages, 7 figure

    Place attachment in deprived neighbourhoods: The impacts of population turnover and social mix

    This paper examines the determinants of individual place attachment, focussing in particular on differences between deprived and others neighbourhoods, and on the impacts of population turnover and social mix. It uses a multi-level modelling approach to take account of both individual- and neighbourhood-level determinants. Data are drawn from a large sample government survey, the Citizenship Survey 2005, to which a variety of neighbourhood-level data have been attached. The paper argues that attachment is significantly lower in more deprived neighbourhoods primarily because these areas have weaker social cohesion but that, in other respects, the drivers of attachment are the same. Turnover has modest direct impacts on attachment through its effect on social cohesion. Social mix has very limited impacts on attachment and the effects vary between social groups. In general, higher status or more dominant groups appear less tolerant of social mix

    Dynamic scaling for 2D superconductors, Josephson junction arrays and superfluids

    The value of the dynamic critical exponent zz is studied for two-dimensional superconducting, superfluid, and Josephson Junction array systems in zero magnetic field via the Fisher-Fisher-Huse dynamic scaling. We find z≃5.6±0.3z\simeq5.6\pm0.3, a relatively large value indicative of non-diffusive dynamics. Universality of the scaling function is tested and confirmed for the thinnest samples. We discuss the validity of the dynamic scaling analysis as well as the previous studies of the Kosterlitz-Thouless-Berezinskii transition in these systems, the results of which seem to be consistent with simple diffusion (z=2z=2).
