    Helping Student Athletes Succeed After Sports Through Workshops

    Being a student athlete myself, I found this project would not only benefit me but would benefit my current teammates. What I have noticed is missing in the world of a student athlete is financial literacy programs and what to do after sports whether you make it professionally or not. Using my Capstone Project, I will be using an Innovative approach, emotional intelligence, and creative thinking broken down through workshops to help my fellow student athletes. I am going to meet with many professional contacts in the fields of finance and career-planning. This will go along with researching peer-reviewed sources in order to create workshop resources to help student-athletes succeed after sports. I will also be interviewing several contacts (retired NBA players) in which I have been coached and mentored by as another source

    Cosmology with redshift surveys of radio sources

    We use the K-z relation for radio galaxies to illustrate why it has proved difficult to obtain definitive cosmological results from studies based entirely on catalogues of the brightest radio sources, e.g. 3C. To improve on this situation we have been undertaking redshift surveys of complete samples drawn from the fainter 6C and 7C radio catalogues. We describe these surveys, and illustrate the new studies they are allowing. We also discuss our `filtered' 6C redshift surveys: these have led to the discovery of a radio galaxy at z=4.4, and are sensitive to similar objects at higher redshift provided the space density of these objects is not declining too rapidly with z. There is currently no direct evidence for a sharp decline in the space density of radio galaxies for z > 4, a result only barely consistent with the observed decline of flat-spectrum radio quasars.Comment: 8 pages Latex, To appear in the "Cosmology with the New Radio Surveys" Conference - Tenerife 13-15 January 199

    A lower limit of dz > 0.06 for the duration of the reionization epoch

    Observations of the 21-centimetre line of atomic hydrogen in the early Universe directly probe the history of the reionization of the gas between galaxies. The observations are challenging, though, because of the low expected signal strength (~10 mK), and contamination by strong (>100 K) foreground synchrotron emission in the Milky Way and extragalactic continuum sources2. If reionization happened rapidly, there should be a characteristic signature visible against the smooth foreground in an all-sky spectrum. Here we report an all-sky spectrum between 100 and 200 MHz, corresponding to the redshift range 6 < z < 13 for the 21-centimetre line.     Contrasting effects of long term versus short-term nitrogen addition on photosynthesis and respiration in the Arctic

    We examined the effects of short (<1–4 years) and long-term (22 years) nitrogen (N) and/or phosphorus (P) addition on the foliar CO2 exchange parameters of the Arctic species Betula nana and Eriophorum vaginatum in northern Alaska. Measured variables included: the carboxylation efficiency of Rubisco (Vcmax), electron transport capacity (Jmax), dark respiration (Rd), chlorophyll a and b content (Chl), and total foliar N (N). For both B. nana and E. vaginatum, foliar N increased by 20–50 % as a consequence of 1–22 years of fertilisation, respectively, and for B. nana foliar N increase was consistent throughout the whole canopy. However, despite this large increase in foliar N, no significant changes in Vcmax and Jmax were observed. In contrast, Rd was significantly higher (>25 %) in both species after 22 years of N addition, but not in the shorter-term treatments. Surprisingly, Chl only increased in both species the first year of fertilisation (i.e. the first season of nutrients applied), but not in the longer-term treatments. These results imply that: (1) under current (low) N availability, these Arctic species either already optimize their photosynthetic capacity per leaf area, or are limited by other nutrients; (2) observed increases in Arctic NEE and GPP with increased nutrient availability are caused by structural changes like increased leaf area index, rather than increased foliar photosynthetic capacity and (3) short-term effects (1–4 years) of nutrient addition cannot always be extrapolated to a larger time scale, which emphasizes the importance of long-term ecological experiments

    The FM-007: An advanced jet commuter for HUB to spoke transportation

    Due to the increasing need for new commuter aircraft, the FM-007 is proposed, a technologically advanced jet propelled short takeoff and landing (STOL) airplane. The proposed commuter is designed for hub to spoke air travel. In order to reduce drag, natural laminar flow technology is integrated into the design using the natural laminar flow airfoil section for the wing. A three lifting surface configuration provides for more efficient cruise flight. This unique design includes a small forward wing (canard), a rear mounted high aspect ratio main wing, and a small horizontal stabilizer high atop the vertical tail. These three surfaces act together to reduce drag by minimizing the downward force the horizontal stabilizer has to account for due to the nose down pitching moment. Commuter aircraft must also incorporate passenger comfort. This is achieved by providing a spacious pressurized cabin with a large galley and reduced cabin noise due to incorporation of noise reduction gear. A basic oval design is adopted, as opposed to a circular design in order to allow for the seating of five passengers abreast. To get STOL capability, an over the wing blown flap is used using a Rolls Royce Tay series engine

    The Composition Gradient in M101 Revisited. II. Electron Temperatures and Implications for the Nebular Abundance Scale

    (Abridged) We use high S/N spectra of 20 HII regions in the giant spiral galaxy M101 to derive electron temperatures for the HII regions and robust metal abundances over radii R = 0.19-1.25 Ro (6-41 kpc). We compare the consistency of electron temperatures measured from the [O III]4363, [N II]5755, [S III]6312, and [O II]7325 auroral lines. Temperatures from [O III], [S III], and [N II] are correlated with relative offsets that are consistent with expectations from nebular photoionization models. However, the temperatures derived from the [O II]7325 line show a large scatter and are nearly uncorrelated with temperatures derived from other ions. Our derived oxygen abundances O/H are well fitted by an exponential distribution over six disk scale lengths, from approximately 1.3 solar in the center to 1/15 solar in the outermost region studied (for solar 12 + log (O/H)=8.7). We measure significant radial gradients in N/O and He/H abundance ratios, but relatively constant S/O and Ar/O. Our abundances are systematically lower by 0.2-0.5 dex than those derived from the most widely used strong-line "empirical" abundance indicators. We suspect that most of the disagreement with the strong-line abundances arises from uncertainties in the nebular models that are used to calibrate the "empirical" scale, and that strong-line abundances derived for HII regions and emission-line galaxies are as much as a factor of two higher than the actual oxygen abundances. However other explanations, such as the effects of temperature fluctuations on the auroral line based abundances cannot be completely ruled out. These results point to the need for direct abundance determinations of a larger sample of extragalactic HII regions, especially for objects more metal-rich than solar.Comment: 50 pages, 14 figures, 8 tables.     Variability in age and size at maturation, reproductive longevity, and long-term growth dynamics for Kemp's ridley sea turtles in the Gulf of Mexico

    Effective management of protected sea turtle populations requires knowledge not only of mean values for demographic and life-history parameters, but also temporal and spatial trends, variability, and underlying causes. For endangered Kemp's ridley sea turtles (Lepidochelys kempii), the need for baseline information of this type has been emphasized during attempts to understand causes underlying the recent truncation in the recovery trajectory for nesting females. To provide insight into variability in age and size at sexual maturation (ASM and SSM) and long-term growth patterns likely to influence population trends, we conducted skeletochronological analysis of humerus bones from 333 Kemp's ridleys stranded throughout the Gulf of Mexico (GOM) from 1993 to 2010. Ranges of possible ASMs (6.8 to 21.8 yr) and SSMs (53.3 to 68.3 cm straightline carapace length (SCL)) estimated using the "rapprochement" skeletal growth mark associated with maturation were broad, supporting incorporation of a maturation schedule in Kemp's ridley population models. Mean ASMs estimated from rapprochement and by fitting logistic, generalized additive mixed, and von Bertalanffy growth models to age and growth data ranged from 11 to 13 yr; confidence intervals for the logistic model predicted maturation of 95% of the population between 11.9 and 14.8 yr. Early juvenile somatic growth rates in the GOM were greater than those previously reported for the Atlantic, indicating potential for differences in maturation trajectories between regions. Finally, long-term, significant decreases in somatic growth response were found for both juveniles and adults, which could influence recruitment to the reproductive population and observed nesting population trends
