    Dieudonn\'e modules and pp-divisible groups associated with Morava KK-theory of Eilenberg-Mac Lane spaces

    We study the structure of the formal groups associated to the Morava KK-theories of integral Eilenberg-Mac Lane spaces. The main result is that every formal group in the collection {K(n)∗K(Z,q),q=2,3,...}\{K(n)^*K({\mathbb Z}, q), q=2,3,...\} for a fixed nn enters in it together with its Serre dual, an analogue of a principal polarization on an abelian variety. We also identify the isogeny class of each of these formal groups over an algebraically closed field. These results are obtained with the help of the Dieudonn\'e correspondence between bicommutative Hopf algebras and Dieudonn\'e modules. We extend P. Goerss's results on the bilinear products of such Hopf algebras and corresponding Dieudonn\'e modules.Comment: 23 page

    Willingness to test for BRCA1/2 in High Risk Women: Influenced by Risk Perception and Family Experience, rather than by Objective or Subjective Numeracy?

    Genetic testing for breast and ovarian cancer can help target prevention programs, and possibly reduce morbidity and mortality. A positive result of BRCA1/2 is a substantial risk factor for breast and ovarian cancer, and its detection often leads to risk reduction interventions such as increased screening, prophylactic mastectomy and oophorectomy. We examined predictors of the decision to undergo cancer related genetic testing: perceived risk, family risk of breast or ovarian cancer, and numeracy as predictors of the decision to test among women at high risk of breast cancer. Stepwise regression analysis of survey responses from 459 women registered in the Cancer Genetics Network revealed greater likelihood to test for women with more family history, higher perceived risk of mutation, or Ashkenazi descent. Neither subjective nor objective numeracy was associated with the decision to test, although we replicated an earlier finding that subjective numeracy predicted willingness to pay for testing. Findings underscore the need for genetic counselling that disentangles risk perception from objective information to promote better decision-making in the context of genetic testing.     Big Data in Science and Healthcare: A Review of Recent Literature and Perspectives

    Objectives: As technology continues to evolve and rise in various industries, such as healthcare, science, education, and gaming, a sophisticated concept known as Big Data is surfacing. The concept of analytics aims to understand data. We set out to portray and discuss perspectives of the evolving use of Big Data in science and healthcare and, to examine some of the opportunities and challenges. Methods: A literature review was conducted to highlight the implications associated with the use of Big Data in scientific research and healthcare innovations, both on a large and small scale. Results: Scientists and health-care providers may learn from one another when it comes to understanding the value of Big Data and analytics. Small data, derived by patients and consumers, also requires analytics to become actionable. Connectivism provides a framework for the use of Big Data and analytics in the areas of science and healthcare. This theory assists individuals to recognize and synthesize how human connections are driving the increase in data. Despite the volume and velocity of Big Data, it is truly about technology connecting humans and assisting them to construct knowledge in new ways. Concluding Thoughts: The concept of Big Data and associated analytics are to be taken seriously when approaching the use of vast volumes of both structured and unstructured data in science and health-care. Future exploration of issues surrounding data privacy, confidentiality, and education are needed. A greater focus on data from social media, the quantified self-movement, and the application of analytics to small data would also be useful

    The internal magnetic field in superconducting ferromagnets

    We have measured the nonlinear response to the ac magnetic field in the superconducting weak ferromagnet Ru-1222, at different regimes of sample cooling which provides unambiguous evidence of the interplay of the domain structure and the vorticity in the superconducting state. This is {\em direct} proof of coexistence of ferromagnetic and superconductive order parameters in high-TcT_c ruthenocuprates.Comment: 9 pages, 6 figure
