On the general problem of quantum phase estimation
The problem of estimating a generic phase-shift experienced by a quantum
state is addressed for a generally degenerate phase shift operator. The optimal
positive operator-valued measure is derived along with the optimal input state.
Two relevant examples are analyzed: i) a multi-mode phase shift operator for

Optical von Neumann measurement
We present an optical scheme that realizes the standard von Neumann
measurement model, providing an indirect measurement of a quadrature of the
field with controllable Gaussian state-reduction. The scheme is made of simple
optical elements, as laser sources, beam splitters, and phase sensitive
amplifiers, along with a feedback mechanism that uses a Pockels cell. We show
that the von Neumann measurement is achieved without the need of working in a

Observational constraints on the neutron star mass distribution
Radio observations of neutron star binary pulsar systems have constrained
strongly the masses of eight neutron stars. Assuming neutron star masses are
uniformly distributed between lower and upper bounds and , the
observations determine with 95\% confidence that and . These limits give observational
support to neutron star formation scenarios that suggest that masses should
fall predominantly in the range , and will also be
important in the interpretation of binary inspiral observations by the Laser

Anisotropic Superparamagnetism of Monodispersive Cobalt-Platinum Nanocrystals
Based on the high-temperature organometallic route (Sun et al. Science 287,
1989 (2000)), we have synthesized powders containing CoPt_3 single crystals
with mean diameters of 3.3(2) nm and 6.0(2) nm and small log-normal widths
sigma=0.15(1). In the entire temperature range from 5 K to 400 K, the
zero-field cooled susceptibility chi(T) displays significant deviations from
ideal superparamagnetism. Approaching the Curie temperature of 450(10) K, the
deviations arise from the (mean-field) type reduction of the ferromagnetic
moments, while below the blocking temperature T_b, chi(T) is suppressed by the
presence of energy barriers, the distributions of which scale with the particle
volumes obtained from transmission electron microscopy (TEM). This indication
for volume anisotropy is supported by scaling analyses of the shape of the
magnetic absorption chi''(T,omega) which reveal distribution functions for the
barriers being also consistent with the volume distributions observed by TEM.
Above 200 K, the magnetization isotherms M(H,T) display Langevin behavior
providing 2.5(1) mu_B per CoPt_3 in agreement with reports on bulk and thin
film CoPt_3. The non-Langevin shape of the magnetization curves at lower
temperatures is for the first time interpreted as anisotropic
superparamagnetism by taking into account an anisotropy energy of the
nanoparticles E_A(T). Using the magnitude and temperature variation of E_A(T),
the mean energy barriers and 'unphysical' small switching times of the
particles obtained from the analyses of chi''(T,omega) are explained. Below T_b
hysteresis loops appear and are quantitatively described by a blocking model,
which also ignores particle interactions, but takes the size distributions from

Measuring the elements of the optical density matrix
Most methods for experimentally reconstructing the quantum state of light
involve determining a quasiprobability distribution such as the Wigner
function. In this paper we present a scheme for measuring individual density
matrix elements in the photon number state representation. Remarkably, the
scheme is simple, involving two beam splitters and a reference field in a

Transverse Phase Locking for Vortex Motion in Square and Triangular Pinning Arrays
We analyze transverse phase locking for vortex motion in a superconductor
with a longitudinal DC drive and a transverse AC drive. For both square and
triangular arrays we observe a variety of fractional phase locking steps in the
velocity versus DC drive which correspond to stable vortex orbits. The locking
steps are more pronounced for the triangular arrays which is due to the fact
that the vortex motion has a periodic transverse velocity component even for
zero transverse AC drive. All the steps increase monotonically in width with AC
amplitude. We confirm that the width of some fractional steps in the square
arrays scales as the square of the AC driving amplitude. In addition we
demonstrate scaling in the velocity versus applied DC driving curves at
depinning and on the main step, similar to that seen for phase locking in
charge-density wave systems. The phase locking steps are most prominent for
commensurate vortex fillings where the interstitial vortices form symmetrical
ground states. For increasing temperature, the fractional steps are washed out
very quickly, while the main step gains a linear component and disappears at
melting. For triangular pinning arrays we again observe transverse phase
locking, with the main and several of the fractional step widths scaling

Acute biphenotypic leukaemia: immunophenotypic and cytogenetic analysis
The incidence of acute biphenotypic leukaemia has ranged from less than 1% to almost 50% in various reports in the literature. This wide variability may be attributed to a number of reasons including lack of consistent diagnostic criteria, use of various panels of antibodies, and the failure to recognize the lack of lineage specificity of some of the antibodies used. The morphology, cytochemistry, immunophenotype and cytogenetics of acute biphenotypic leukaemias from our institution were studied. The diagnostic criteria took into consideration the morphology of the analysed cells, light scatter characteristics, and evaluation of antibody fluorescence histograms in determining whether the aberrant marker expression was arising from leukaemic blasts or differentiated bone marrow elements. Fifty-two of 746 cases (7%) fulfilled our criteria for acute biphenotypic leukaemias. These included 30 cases of acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) expressing myeloid antigens, 21 cases of acute myelogenous leukaemia (AML) expressing lymphoid markers, and one case of ALL expressing both B- and T-cell associated antigens. The acute biphenotypic leukaemia cases consisted of four major immunophenotypic subgroups: CD2± AML (11), CD19± AML (8), CD13 and/or CD33± ALL (24), CD11b± ALL (5) and others (4). Chromosomal analysis was carried out in 42/52 of the acute biphenotypic leukaemia cases; a clonal abnormality was found in 31 of these 42 cases. This study highlights the problems encountered in the diagnosis of acute biphenotypic leukaemia, some of which may be reponsible for the wide variation in the reported incidence of this leukaemia. We suggest that the use of strict, uniform diagnostic criteria may help in establishing a more consistent approach towards diagnosis of this leukaemic entity. Tacrolimus without antilymphocyte induction therapy prevents pancreas loss from rejection in 123 consecutive patients
In this series, antilymphoid induction therapy did not appear to be necessary to prevent early graft loss from rejection. In addition, we have followed cytomegalovirus (CMV) antigenemia (pp65) for CMV infection. Although some patients developed a positive antigenemia in the seropositive to negative donor-recipient combinations, only one patient had a prolonged febrile course for 1 week
