Unraveling Gluon Jet Quenching through J/ψJ/\psi Production in Heavy-Ion Collisions

Jet quenching has long been regarded as one of the key signatures for the formation of quark-gluon plasma in heavy-ion collisions. Despite significant efforts, the separate identification of quark and gluon jet quenching has remained as a challenge. Here we show that J/ψJ/\psi in high transverse momentum (pTp_\text{T}) region provides a uniquely sensitive probe of in-medium gluon energy loss since its production at high pTp_\text{T} is particularly dominated by gluon fragmentation. Such gluon-dominance is first demonstrated for the baseline of proton-proton collisions within the framework of leading power NRQCD factorization formalism. We then use the linear Boltzmann transport model combined with hydrodynamics for the simulation of jet-medium interaction in nucleus-nucleus collisions. The satisfactory description of experimental data on both nuclear modification factor RAAR_{\text{AA}} and elliptic flow v2v_2 reveals, for the first time, that the gluon jet quenching is the driving force for high pTp_\text{T} J/ψJ/\psi suppression. This novel finding is further confirmed by the data-driven Bayesian analyses of relevant experimental measurements, from which we also obtain the first quantitative extraction of the gluon energy loss distribution in the quark-gluon plasma.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, version published in Science Bulleti

    2,5-Dibromoterephthalic acid dihydrate

The asymmetric unit of the title compound, C8H4Br2O4·2H2O, contains one half-molecule of 2,5-dibromoterephthalic acid (DBTA) and one water molecule. The DBTA molecule is centrosymmetric. In the crystal structure, intermolecular O—H⋯O hydrogen bonds link the molecules, forming a three-dimensional framework

In the title compound, C15H12O3·H2O, the two rings are oriented at a dihedral angle of 69.12 (3)°. In the crystal structure, intermolecular O—H⋯O hydrogen bonds link the molecules into a three-dimensional framework

The title molecule, C16H16Br2O8, lies on a crystallographic twofold axis. Weak intramolecular C—H⋯O hydrogen bonds may, in part, control the conformation of the molecule. In the crystal structure, molecules are connected into a two-dimensional network via weak intermolecular C—H⋯O hydrogen bonds

Association between intention to call EMS in stroke patients and level of hospital classification and emergency medical service usage among stroke patients in China

Introduction: Different categories of hospitals in China have varying levels of patient education. Stroke recognition and emergency medical services (EMS) usage in patients appears to be closely associated with patient education in hospital. This study aimed to explore the effect of hospital classification in China on a patient’s ability to recognise stroke symptoms and the likelihood of using the EMS.Material and methods: A cross-sectional, community-based study was conducted from January to May 2017, and 1,426 residents who had previously been hospitalised were analysed. The patients involved in the study were from 69 administrative areas in China. Multivariable logistic regression models were developed separately for primary, secondary, and tertiary hospitals to identify the associations between hospital grades and patient stroke recognition or the prospects of them using the EMS.Results: Among the 1,426 patients studied, 725 had been admitted to tertiary hospitals, 448 to secondary hospitals, and 253 to primary hospitals. According to univariate analysis, tertiary hospital patients were more likely to use the EMS than patients in primary and secondary hospitals. The difference therein was still significant after full adjustment. Conclusions: Patients in tertiary hospitals were significantly more likely to use the EMS promptly compared to patients in primary or secondary hospitals. Therefore, patient education on timely EMS usage at stroke onset should be enhanced in primary and secondary hospitals in China

Poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) and [6,6]-phenyl-C71 butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) polymer solar cell is studied by using GPVDM simulations and experiments. The research focuses on the effects of active layer thickness on solar cell structures as bulk heterojunction (BHJ) (ITO/P3HT:PCBM/Al) as compared to a bilayer structure (ITO/P3HT/PCBM/Al). The optimal active layer thickness of 200 nm is obtained in the simulation for BHJ solar structure. The results also indicate that bulk heterojunctions exhibit slightly higher efficiency than bilayer solar cell with the same thickness, possibly due to a better and worthier total surface region for charge separation and reduced recombination between the electrons and holes. BHJ solar cell is fabricated in the experiment by using spin coating. The results show that higher spin speeds result in a thinner active layer, and the device coated at 2500 rpm had the highest power conversion efficiency of 0.91 % because of a higher Isc and fill factor, despite a low absorption. The results suggest that bulk resistance, and morphology of the active layer play important roles in the carrier transport in the P3HT:PCBM solar cell

A case-control study on risk factors of breast cancer in China

Introduction: To screen the risk factors associated with breast cancer among Chinese women in order to evaluate the individual risk of developing breast cancer among women in China. Material and methods: A case-control study on 416 breast cancer patients and 1156 matched controls was conducted in 14 hospitals in 8 provinces of China in 2008. Controls were age- and region-matched to the cases. Clinicians conducted in-person interviews with the subjects to collect information on demographics and suspected risk factors for breast cancer that are known worldwide. Conditional logistic regression was used to derive odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) for the associations between risk factors and breast cancer. Results: Compared with matched controls, women with breast cancer were significantly more likely to have higher body mass index (BMI, OR = 4.07, 95% CI; 2.98-5.55), history of benign breast disease (BBD) biopsy (OR = 1.68, 95% CI; 1.19-2.38), older age of menarche (AOM) (OR = 1.41, 95% CI: 107-187), stress anticipation (SA), for grade 1-4, OR = 2.15, 95% CI; 1.26-3.66; for grade 5-9, OR = 3.48, 95% CI; 2.03-5.95) and menopause (OR = 2.22, 95% CI: 1.50-3.282) at the level of p < 0.05. Family history of breast cancer (FHBC) in first-degree relatives (OR = 1.66, 95% CI; 0.77-3.59) and use of oral contraceptives (OC) (OR = 1.59, 95% CI; 0.83-3.05) were associated with an increased risk of breast cancer at the level of p < 0.20. Conclusions: Our results showed that BMI, history of BBD biopsy, older AOM, SA and menopause were associated with increased risk of breast cancer among Chinese women. The findings derived from the study provided some suggestions for population-based prevention and control of breast cancer in China.Medicine, General & InternalSCI(E)15ARTICLE2303-309
