    The Effect of Using Authentic Texts on Iranian EFL Learners' Incidental Vocabulary Learning: The Case of English Newspaper

    This study intended to investigate the effect of using authentic texts on Iranian EFL learners' incidental vocabulary learning. To this end, a population of 52 Iranian female EFL learners aged 15 to 17 was selected. They were two intact classes; experimental group (25 students) and control group (27 students). Both groups received a pretest at the first session. Regarding the treatment, the authentic reading texts selected from World News for students of English, Level1 was taught to the experimental group while the texts selected from book 1 was taught to the control group. After a month post-test were run among all of the participants in both control and experimental groups to find out the possible effects of the treatment on the participants' vocabulary improvement. The analysis of data paired samples t-test and independent samples t-test showed that there was a significant difference between the post-tests of experimental and control groups. The experimental group outperformed the control group on the post-test

    Effects of Continuous Exercise and Silymarin Supplementation on Tumor Necrosis Factor-alpha (TNF-a) and Liver Leptin in Male Wistar Rats with Fatty Liver Disease

    Background and Objective: Leptin is associated with metabolic disorders and promotes the development of liver steatosis to steatohepatitis. It selectively increases the secretion of Tumor-necrosis factor-α (TNF-a) in response to saturated fatty acid. The general purpose of this research was to determine the effects of eight weeks of continuous training and silymarin supplementation on the serum levels of TNF-α and leptin in Wistar rats with fatty liver disease. Methods: In this experimental study, 40 male Wistar rats aged three weeks and weighting 159±3 grams were randomly divided into five groups: normal diet/saline, high-fat diet/saline (control), high-fat diet/supplemented, high-fat diet/exercise/saline, and high-fat diet/exercise/supplement. The rats were fed 10 grams per 100 grams of body weight (standard diet 13% fat and high-fat diet 41% fat) for eight weeks, and silymarin (140 mg per kilogram body weight) were given by gavage for 2 weeks. The continuous aerobic exercise protocol consisted 30 minutes of treadmill running at 70-75% of VO2max for eight weeks, five days a week. After sacrificing the animals, samples were taken and sent to the laboratory for histological analysis. The expression of leptin and TNF-α in the liver was measured using commercial ELISA kits. Results: The findings showed a greater decrease in hepatic leptin concentration in the high-fat diet + continuous exercise + supplement group (P<0.05) compared to the high-fat diet + continuous exercise + saline group (P<0.05). Tukey's post hoc test showed a greater decrease in the concentration of hepatic TNF-α in the high-fat diet + saline group (compared to the high-fat diet + supplement group) (P<0.05), and the high-fat + exercise + saline group (P<0.05). The weight of the rats in the normal diet + saline group differed significantly from other groups (P<0.05). Conclusion: The results indicated that the combination of continuous training with silymarin supplementation can help reduce leptin and TNF-α in rats with a high-fat diet, an effect not observed by silymarin supplementation alone. Therefore, the combination of continuous aerobic exercises and silymarin supplementation can further oxidize fat and reduce inflammation in the body

    Elucidation of the Professors\' Attitude toward the Implementation of Student Mentoring in the Field of Medical Education: A Qualitative Study

    Background and Objectives: Improvement of the level of student development is one of the most important goals of the higher education system. Regarding the significance of providing and reinforcing the developmental opportunities in medical students and its impact on promoting the health community system, the present study aimed to explain the attitude of professors towards the implementation of student mentoring in the field of medical education.   Methods: The present study was conducted based on a qualitative design. The data were collected during the academic years of 2019-20 through conducting semi-structured interviews with the faculty members of Shiraz University of Medical Sciences, Shiraz, Iran, and continued until the responses were fully reached. Accordingly, initially, 16 professors were selected according to the purposeful sampling method and face-to-face interviews with an approximate time of one hour were conducted in the professors' office. The data were analyzed based on a step by step content analysis through 6 steps.   Results: The participants included 16 cases (9 females and 7 males) with the academic ranks of professor (n=2), assistant professors (n=12), and instructors (n=2). In total, 25 basic themes were extracted and based on the overlapped content, 6 organizational contents were obtained during the research procedure. In the next stage, they were divided into three comprehensive contents of individual, professional, and social empowerment.   Conclusion: The implementation outcome of the student mentoring in medical sciences has been significant in various aspects and has remarkable effects on the improvement of students and the enhancement of the healthcare system of the country. The results indicated that according to the professors’ attitudes, the components of individual, professional, and social empowerment can be achieved if mentoring is performed properly, especially in the field of medical sciences. Due to the sensitivity of this domain and its direct impact on human life and health, it has attracted a great significance. This study can be a basis for further studies related to mentoring in the higher education system

    Effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on lifestyle among Iranian population: A multicenter cross-sectional study

    Background: Quarantine, an unpleasant experience, was implemented in many countries to limit the spread of Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), which it could associated whit lifestyle changes. The present study aimed to determine the changes in Iranian's lifestyle during COVID-19 pandemic. Materials and Methods: In the present cross-sectional study, 2710 Iranian people completed an online researcher-made questionnaire asking lifestyle regarding COVID-19, which includes five sections about physical activity, stress and anxiety, nutrition habit, sleep disorders, and interpersonal relationship in addition to demographic data from January to February 2021, using the multistage cluster sampling method. Results: The participants' mean age was 33.78 +/- 11.50 years and 68.3% of them were female. Traveling, sightseeing, and family visits have been eliminated from 91%, 83.5%, and 77.5% of participants' lives, respectively. There were increase in stress level (P < 0.001), weight of the participants (P < 0.001), sleep problems (P < 0.001), and healthier foods (P < 0.001) but decrease in interpersonal communication (P < 0.001) and the amount of physical activity (P < 0.001). Conclusion: In summary, this study indicates some changes in lifestyle of Iranian people, including changes in some eating practices, physical activity, social communication, and sleeping habits during the pandemic. However, as the COVID-19 pandemic is ongoing, a comprehensive understanding of these behaviors and habits can help develop interventions to mitigate the negative lifestyle behaviors during COVID-19 pandemic
