    Critical Workforce Skills for Bachelor-Level Geoscientists: An Analysis of Geoscience Job Advertisements

    Understanding the skills bachelor-level geoscientists need to enter the workforce is critical to their success. The goal of this study was to identify the workforce skills that are most requested from a broad range of geoscience employers. We collected 3668 job advertisements for bachelor-level geoscientists and used a case-insensitive, code-matching function in Matlab to determine the skills geoscience employers seek. Written communication (67%), field skills (63%), planning (53%), and driving (51%) were most frequently requested. Field skills and data collection were frequently found together in the ads. Written communication skills were common regardless of occupation. Quantitative skills were requested less frequently (23%) but were usually mentioned several times in the ads that did request them, signaling their importance for certain jobs. Some geoscience-specific skills were rarely found, such as temporal understanding (5%) and systems thinking (0%). We also subdivided field skills into individual tasks and ranked them by employer demand. Site assessments and evaluations, unspecified field tasks, and monitoring were the most frequently requested field skills. This study presents the geoscience community with a picture of the skills sought by employers of bachelor-level geoscientists and provides departments and programs with data they can use to assess their curricula for workforce preparation

    Partner selection in green supply chains using PSO – a practical approach

    Partner selection is crucial to green supply chain management as the focal firm is responsible for the environmental performance of the whole supply chain. The construction of appropriate selection criteria is an essential, but often neglected pre-requisite in the partner selection process. This paper proposes a three-stage model that combines Dempster-Shafer belief acceptability theory and particle swarm optimization technique for the first time in this application. This enables optimization of both effectiveness, in its consideration of the inter-dependence of a broad range of quantitative and qualitative selection criteria, and efficiency in its use of scarce resources during the criteria construction process to be achieved simultaneously. This also enables both operational and strategic attributes can be selected at different levels of hierarchy criteria in different decision-making environments. The practical efficacy of the model is demonstrated by an application in Company ABC, a large Chinese electronic equipment and instrument manufacturer

    Competing with stationary prediction strategies

    In this paper we introduce the class of stationary prediction strategies and construct a prediction algorithm that asymptotically performs as well as the best continuous stationary strategy. We make mild compactness assumptions but no stochastic assumptions about the environment. In particular, no assumption of stationarity is made about the environment, and the stationarity of the considered strategies only means that they do not depend explicitly on time; we argue that it is natural to consider only stationary strategies even for highly non-stationary environments.Comment: 20 page

    New procedures for testing whether stock price processes are martingales

    We propose procedures for testing whether stock price processes are martingales based on limit order type betting strategies. We first show that the null hypothesis of martingale property of a stock price process can be tested based on the capital process of a betting strategy. In particular with high frequency Markov type strategies we find that martingale null hypotheses are rejected for many stock price processes

    Non-additive probabilities and quantum logic in finite quantum systems

    YesA quantum system Σ(d) with variables in Z(d) and with Hilbert space H(d), is considered. It is shown that the additivity relation of Kolmogorov probabilities, is not valid in the Birkhoff-von Neumann orthocomplemented modular lattice of subspaces L(d). A second lattice Λ(d) which is distributive and contains the subsystems of Σ(d) is also considered. It is shown that in this case also, the additivity relation of Kolmogorov probabilities is not valid. This suggests that a more general (than Kolmogorov) probability theory is needed, and here we adopt the Dempster-Shafer probability theory. In both of these lattices, there are sublattices which are Boolean algebras, and within these 'islands' quantum probabilities are additive

    Texture of fermion mass matrices in partially unified theories

    We investigate the texture of fermion mass matrices in theories with partial unification (for example SU(2)L×SU(2)R×SU(4)c SU(2)_L\times SU(2)_R\times SU(4)_c) at a scale ∼1012\sim 10^{12} GeV. Starting with the low energy values of the masses and the mixing angles, we find only two viable textures with atmost four texture zeros. One of these corresponds to a somewhat modified Fritzsch textures. A theoretical derivataion of these textures leads to new interesting relations among the masses and the mixing angles.Comment: 10 pages(Latex

    The COBE Diffuse Infrared Background Experiment Search for the Cosmic Infrared Background: I. Limits and Detections

    The DIRBE on the COBE spacecraft was designed primarily to conduct systematic search for an isotropic CIB in ten photometric bands from 1.25 to 240 microns. The results of that search are presented here. Conservative limits on the CIB are obtained from the minimum observed brightness in all-sky maps at each wavelength, with the faintest limits in the DIRBE spectral range being at 3.5 microns (\nu I_\nu < 64 nW/m^2/sr, 95% CL) and at 240 microns (\nu I_\nu < 28 nW/m^2/sr, 95% CL). The bright foregrounds from interplanetary dust scattering and emission, stars, and interstellar dust emission are the principal impediments to the DIRBE measurements of the CIB. These foregrounds have been modeled and removed from the sky maps. Assessment of the random and systematic uncertainties in the residuals and tests for isotropy show that only the 140 and 240 microns data provide candidate detections of the CIB. The residuals and their uncertainties provide CIB upper limits more restrictive than the dark sky limits at wavelengths from 1.25 to 100 microns. No plausible solar system or Galactic source of the observed 140 and 240 microns residuals can be identified, leading to the conclusion that the CIB has been detected at levels of \nu I_\nu = 25+-7 and 14+-3 nW/m^2/sr at 140 and 240 microns respectively. The integrated energy from 140 to 240 microns, 10.3 nW/m^2/sr, is about twice the integrated optical light from the galaxies in the Hubble Deep Field, suggesting that star formation might have been heavily enshrouded by dust at high redshift. The detections and upper limits reported here provide new constraints on models of the history of energy-releasing processes and dust production since the decoupling of the cosmic microwave background from matter.Comment: 26 pages and 5 figures, accepted for publication in the Astrophyical Journa

    Coherent Control of Isotope Separation in HD+ Photodissociation by Strong Fields

    The photodissociation of the HD+ molecular ion in intense short- pulsed linearly polarized laser fields is studied using a time- dependent wave-packet approach where molecular rotation is fully included. We show that applying a coherent superposition of the fundamental radiation with its second harmonic can lead to asymmetries in the fragment angular distributions, with significant differences between the hydrogen and deuterium distributions in the long wavelength domain where the permanent dipole is most efficient.
