    Barriers to occupational therapy fieldwork education in Iran: The perspectives of fieldwork educators and students

    Background: Clinical education is a vital factor in the process of learning in medical sciences universities. The aim of the present study was to explore the perspectives of fieldwork educators and students concerning barriers to occupational therapy fieldwork education in Iran. Materials and Methods: A qualitative research was conducted from May 2019 to April 2020 to address the study objectives. The data analysis was performed using conventional content analysis based on Graneheim and Lundman's approach. Purposive sampling was used to enroll 12 educators and 14 students of various backgrounds (physical disabilities-adult, physical disabilities-pediatrics, psychosocial-adult, and psychosocial-pediatrics) in the study. Results: The findings indicated that the main themes were related to fieldwork educators, fieldwork settings, educational planning, students, and educational regulation. Conclusions: It can be concluded that the perspectives of students and occupational therapy educators regarding the field of clinical education are not only important but also useful for the attainment of effective clinical education and the development of knowledge related to rehabilitation nursing education. Therefore, educational planners should develop effective programs based on these themes. © 2021 Wolters Kluwer Medknow Publications. All rights reserved

    Increasing mothers� confidence and ability by creating opportunities for parent empowerment (COPE): A randomized, controlled trial

    Objectives Premature neonates are at great risk for cerebral palsy, developmental delays, hearing problems and visual impairments. Interventions to reduce the morbidities and adverse health outcomes in these neonates and improve parent-infant interaction are highly important. This study was conducted to determine the effect of the Creating Opportunities for Parent Empowerment (COPE) program on the perceived maternal parenting self-efficacy of premature parents. Materials & Methods This was a randomized controlled trial with equal randomization (1:1:1 for 3 groups) and parallel group design. Forty-five preterm neonates were randomly allocated to treatment (n=15), supervision (n=15) and control (n=15) groups. COPE program was provided in the form of a 4-phase educational-behavioral intervention to the treatment and supervision groups. The primary outcome was parental self-efficacy, which was assessed by the Perceived Maternal Parenting Self-Efficacy inventory. All the measurements were performed pre-and post-completion with the valid equipment and by blind assessors. Results COPE mothers reported significantly stronger beliefs regarding their parental role and have more confidence to their ability in caring of neonates compared with control mothers (P-value <0.001). Conclusion An educational-behavioral intervention would strengthen mothers� belief in themselves and knowledge about their neonates and would enhance premature mothers� ability to care for their neonates as well as parent-infant interaction. © 2020, Iranian Child Neurology Society.     Prevalence of Psychiatric Symptoms and Mental Health Services in Students with Specific Learning Disabilities in Tehran, Iran

    Children with specific learning disabilities are at a greater risk of mental health problems than their non-disabled peers. Further interventions and research will be required. This is a cross-sectional study. A sample of 107 students (7 to 11 years old) with specific learning disabilities were randomly selected from educational and rehabilitation settings in Tehran. The Child Symptom Inventory-4 (CSI-4) (parent checklist) was administered. Among children studied, 86 subjects (82.8 %) in some of the categories of psychiatric symptoms gained scores above the cut-off point. The most prevalent psychiatric symptoms were related to attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, generalized anxiety disorder and oppositional defiant disorder. There were not any statistically significant differences between the genders. In addition to direct education, 15 subjects (14 %) were receiving medication, 2 subjects (1.9 %) were receiving only occupational therapy, 2 subjects (1.9 %) were receiving only speech therapy, and 5 subjects (4.7 %) were receiving both occupational and speech therapy. The emphasis on considering co-morbid symptoms and usage of mental health services are important issues for students with specific learning difficulties

    Studying the situation of providing services for people with disability are very important and in current situation which is dominate on system providing rehabilitation services in Iran, private rehabilitation centers can be the best and the most important focus for this study. This research performed by qualitative method and with phenomenology type, and purposeful sampling did as purposeful and based on similar samples. The samples of this study consisted of 14 managers of private rehabilitation centers who had especial experiences about the theme of research and providing rehabilitation services. The method of executing research was base on deep and open semi-structured interview that use from method focus group discussion which is a type of semi-structure interview for collecting data from samples. Collected data were analyzed by written analyze method and used from suggested Van Manen suggestion method. Managers of private rehabilitation centers meet different problems and confront with different situations in their centers. General problem which appear as a frame of problems related to private politic, especial problems related to private rehabilitation centers activities, and intra/extra communication. The delivery of services to private sector does not mean depriving the responsibility from Welfare Organization and its rehabilitation deputy. The organization should issue establishment license for private rehabilitation centers and administer it

    Previous studies have shown the adverse effects of gestational diabetes on hippocampal neuronal density in animal models. This study was conducted to determine the effect of gestational diabetes on retinal ganglionic cell density, the thickness of the retinal layer and apoptotic ganglionic cell density in 28-day-old of rat offspring. In this experimental study, 10 Wistar rat dams were randomly allocated in control and diabetic groups. Gestational diabetes was induced by 40 mg/kg/body weight of streptozotocin at the first day of gestation, intraperitoneally, dams in control group received an equivalent volume normal saline. At postnatal day 28, six offspring of each gestational diabetes and controls were randomly selected, sacrificed and sections (6 micrometer) were taken from the eye and stained with hematoxylin and eosin. The density of ganglionic cells and the number of dUTP end-labeling (TUNEL)-positive cells were evaluated in 20000 μm2 area of ganglion layer of the retina. The ganglionic cells density were reduced (27.4) in gestational diabetic offspring in compared to controls (22.5±1.5 vs. 31.0±0.9, P&lt;0.01). The apoptotic ganglionic cells of retina in interventional group significantly increased in compared to controls (6.74±0.60 vs. 5.12±0.26, P&lt;0.02). This study showed that the uncontrolled gestational diabetes can reduce the number of ganglionic cells and increase apoptotic ganglionic cells of retina layer in rat offspring. © 2014, Universidad de la Frontera.     Participation in Peer-Play Activities Among Children With Specific Learning Disability: A Randomized Controlled Trial

    OBJECTIVE: Children with a specific learning disability (SLD) have deficits in social and academic competence and executive function (EF). In this study, we used the Model of Human Occupation to investigate the effect of peer-play activities on occupational values and competence as well as EF skills (i.e., behavior regulation and metacognition) in children with SLD. METHOD: Forty-nine children ages 7-11 yr with SLD were randomly assigned to the peer-play and control groups. Outcome measures were the Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function and the Child Occupational Self-Assessment (COSA). RESULTS: Data analysis showed that the effects of the intervention on EF skills were medium to large. The occupational values and competence did not change according to the COSA. CONCLUSION: Occupational therapy practitioners can use peer-play activities to enhance EF in children with SLD; however, perceived occupational values and competence may not show any changes with the peer-play intervention using a self-assessment instrument.     Atorvastatin attenuates the antinociceptive tolerance of morphine via nitric oxide dependent pathway in male mice

    The development of morphine-induced antinociceptive tolerance limits its therapeutic efficacy in pain management. Atorvastatin, or competitive inhibitor of 3-hydroxy-methyl-glutaryl coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase, is mainstay agent in hypercholesterolemia treatment. Beyond the cholesterol-lowering activity, exploration of neuroprotective properties of this statin indicates its potential benefit in central nervous disorders. The aim of the present study was to assess the effects of atorvastatin in development and expression of morphine-induced analgesic tolerance in male mice and probable involvement of nitric oxide. Chronic and acute treatment with atorvastatin 10 and 20 mg/kg, respectively, could alleviate morphine tolerance in development and expression phases. Chronic co-administration of nitric oxide synthase (NOS) inhibitors including L-NAME (non selective NOS inhibitor; 2 mg/kg), aminoguanidine (selective inducible NOS inhibitor; 50 mg/kg) and 7-NI (selective neuronal NOS inhibitor; 15 mg/kg) with atorvastatin blocked the protective effect of atorvastatin in tolerance reversal. Moreover, reversing the atorvastatin effect was also observed in acute simultaneous treatment of L-NAME (5 mg/kg) and aminoguanidine (100 mg/kg) with atorvastatin. Co-treatment of guanylyl cyclase inhibitor, ODQ (chronic dose: 10 mg/kg and acute dose: 20 mg/kg) was associated with prevention of atorvastatin anti-tolerance properties. Our results revealed that the atorvastatin modulating role in morphine antinociceptive tolerance is mediated at least in part via nitric oxide in animal pain models of hot plate and tail flick. © 2016 Elsevier Inc
