Around the corner : the life and death of Grandview's corner grocery stores
The corner grocery store stands as a venerable urban landmark in cities across North
America yet the history of these businesses is often absent from the stories of our cities.
The neighbourhood of Grandview in Vancouver, Canadaâs east side was, at varying
points in time, the site of many corner grocery stores. While some research has been
conducted on Grandviewâs main street (Commercial Drive), a thorough investigation into
the corner grocery stores of âback-streetâ Grandview is needed. This paper attempts to
map out the neighbourhoodâs old corner grocery stores and seeks to reveal the multiple
layers of history that lie beneath each building. To do so, the paper discusses the
changing pattern of grocery retailing in Vancouver from small independent corner stores
to large âmodernâ supermarkets to argue that the demise of the corner grocery is a result
of these shifting consumer patterns. By investigating the history of these often-neglected
businesses, this paper argues that we can begin to see the changing shifts in

Peer-to-peer financing mechanisms to accelerate renewable energy deployment
Despite the clear need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, lack of access to capital and appropriate financing mechanisms has limited the deployment of renewable energy technologies (RETs). Feed-in tariff (FIT) programmes have been used successfully in many countries to make RETs more economically feasible. Unfortunately, the large capital costs of RETs can result both in the slow uptake of FIT programmes and incomplete capture of deployment potential. Subsidies are concentrated in financial institutions rather than the greater population as traditional bank loans are required to fund RET projects. This article critically analyses and considers the political, financial and logistical risks of an innovative peer-to-peer (P2P) financing mechanism. This mechanism has the goal of increasing RET deployment capacity under an FIT programme in an effort to equitably distribute both the environmental and economic advantages throughout the entire population. Using the Ontario FIT programme as a case study, this article illustrates how the guaranteed income stream from a solar photovoltaic system can be modelled as an investment and how P2P lending mechanisms can then be used to provide capital for the initial costs. The requirements for and limitations of these types of funding mechanisms for RETs are quantified and discussed and future work to deploy this methodology is described
New guidelines for the perioperative care of people living with frailty undergoing elective and emergency surgeryâa commentary
Frailty is common in the older population and is a predictor of adverse outcomes following emergency and elective surgery. Identification of frailty is key to enable targeted intervention throughout the perioperative pathway from contemplation of surgery to recovery. Despite evidence on how to identify and modify frailty, such interventions are not yet routine perioperative care. To address this implementation gap, a guideline was published in 2021 by the Centre for Perioperative Care and the British Geriatrics Society, working with patient representatives and all stakeholders involved in the perioperative care of patients with frailty undergoing surgery. The guideline covers all aspects of perioperative care relevant to adults living with frailty undergoing elective and emergency surgery. It is written for healthcare professionals, as well as for patients and their carers, managers and commissioners. Implementation of the guideline will require collaboration between all stakeholders, underpinned by an implementation strategy, workforce development with supporting education and training resources, and evaluation through national audit and research. The guideline is an important step in improving perioperative outcomes for people living with frailty and quality of healthcare services. This commentary provides a summary and discussion of the evidence informing the standards and recommendations in the published guideline
