Ion kinetic effects on the tilt mode in FRCs
Theory and simulations have shown that field reversed configurations (FRG's) should be unstable magnetohydrodynamically to the tilting mode, yet tilting seldom is seen in the experiments. Profile effects (within MHD) and ion finite larmor radius (FLR) effects have been prosed to explain the observed stability of FRC's. The present work seeks to test both of these effects
Role of confined phonons in thin film superconductivity
We calculate the critical temperature and the superconducting energy
gaps of a thin film superconductor system, where is the
superconducting energy gap of the -th subband. Since the quantization of
both the electron energy and phonon spectrum arises due to dimensional
confinement in one direction, the effective electron-electron interaction
mediated by the quantized confined phonons is different from that mediated by
the bulk phonon, leading to the modification of in the thin film system.
We investigate the dependence of and on the film thickness
with this modified interaction.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure
Anomalous mirror symmetry breaking in a model insulating cuprate Srâ‚‚CuOâ‚‚Clâ‚‚
Understanding the complex phase diagram of cuprate superconductors is an outstanding challenge. The most actively studied questions surround the nature of the pseudogap and strange metal states and their relationship to superconductivity. In contrast, there is general agreement that the low energy physics of the Mott insulating parent state is well captured by a two-dimensional spin S = 1/2 antiferromagnetic (AFM) Heisenberg model. However, recent observations of a large thermal Hall conductivity in several parent cuprates appear to defy this simple model and suggest proximity to a magneto-chiral state that breaks all mirror planes perpendicular to the CuO₂ layers. Here we use optical second harmonic generation to directly resolve the point group symmetries of the model parent cuprate Sr₂CuO₂Cl₂. We report evidence of an order parameter Φ that breaks all perpendicular mirror planes and is consistent with a magneto-chiral state in zero magnetic field. Although Φ is clearly coupled to the AFM order parameter, we are unable to realize its time-reversed partner (−Φ) by thermal cycling through the AFM transition temperature (TN ≈ 260 K) or by sampling different spatial locations. This suggests that Φ onsets above TN and may be relevant to the mechanism of pseudogap formation
Control of Dephasing and Phonon Emission in Coupled Quantum Dots
We predict that phonon subband quantization can be detected in the non-linear
electron current through double quantum dot qubits embedded into nano-size
semiconductor slabs, acting as phonon cavities. For particular values of the
dot level splitting , piezo-electric or deformation potential
scattering is either drastically reduced as compared to the bulk case, or
strongly enhanced due to phonon van Hove singularities. By tuning via
gate voltages, one can either control dephasing, or strongly increase emission
into phonon modes with characteristic angular distributions.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication as Rapid Comm. in Phys.

Polarization observables in p-d scattering below 30 MeV
Differential and total breakup cross sections as well as vector and tensor
analyzing powers for p-d scattering are studied for energies above the deuteron
breakup threshold up to E(lab)=28 MeV. The p-d scattering wave function is
expanded in terms of the correlated hyperspherical harmonic basis and the
elastic S-matrix is obtained using the Kohn variational principle in its
complex form. The effects of the Coulomb interaction, which are expected to be
important in this energy range, have been rigorously taken into account. The
Argonne AV18 interaction and the Urbana URIX three-nucleon potential have been
used to perform a comparison to the available experimental data.Comment: 31 pages, 8 figure
