International Symposium on Greenhouse Management for Better Yield and Quality in Mild Winter Climates -- NOV 03-05, 1997 -- ANTALYA, TURKEYWOS: 000081941300003Protected cultivation began in the 1940's in Turkey in glasshouses built in Antalya. After plastics introduced to agriculture, protected cultivation area increased rapidly and now total area has reached to 33,834 ha. Area under low plastic tunnel is 58 % of the total, while the rest belongs to greenhouses. 77 and 23 % of the greenhouses are covered with plastic films and glass, respectively. Most of the greenhouses and tunnels are located on the Mediterranean coast with favorable climatic conditions. Crop production is realized mainly in unheated greenhouses by taking some precautions against frost. Vegetables, ornamental plants and fruits are grown in 95, 4 and 1 % of the total greenhouse area, respectively. This paper is aimed to summarize the present growing conditions such as development of protected cultivation, construction and covering materials, size, cultivated crops and technology of crop production.Int Soc Horticultural Sci, Commiss Protected Cultiva

The effect of pot size and growing media on growth of tomato in soilless culture

This research was aimed at investigating the effect of different pot sizes and growing media on the growth of tomato plants, was carried out in the autumn and spring seasons in a greenhouse. In the autumn, the tomato cv. 'Sagit 146'; and in the spring the tomato cvs. 'Sagit 146' and 'Amfora Fl' were used as plant material. In both seasons 10 pots with one tomato plant in each pot were used in each plots. In the trials, peat, perlite and 1.1 peat-perlite mix were used as substrates, and 2 pot sizes; 8 1 (25x23 cm) and 16 1 (32x28 cm) were used. The nutrient solution recommended by Maas and Adamson (1980) was used as the feeding material. The growing media, pot sizes and interactions between them had no effect on total yield, but growing media affected the total number of fruits and the highest total number of fruits was obtained from the plants raised in perlite in autumn. In spring, pot sizes affected the total yield significantly and the best results were obtained from the plants raised in 16 1 pots. Also, using 2 pot sizes and 3 substrates had no significant effect on the vegetative growth of plants. So, using the 8 1 pot size will prevent over use of substrates providing economical advantages in container cultivation

Effects of different growing media on greenhouse lettuce grown in soilless culture

In this research, the effects of different growing media on lettuce production were investigated. Eight media made from the following materials perlite, pumice, fine sawdust, ground pine (Pinus brutia) bark and mixtures of these materials (1.1) were used. Seedlings with 3-4 leaves were transplanted in 4-liter pots filled with these substrates on 20 December 1995 and watered with a complete nutrient solution. To consider the effects of media on lettuce growing up to a certain time, all the lettuces, regardless of real harvest time, were harvested on 8 March 1996

This investigation was carried out in order to find out the effect of dried tomato waste levels in the concentrates on fattening performance of weaned lambs. In the study 3 different tomato waste levels were used and live weigth gains, feed consumptions and feed efficiencies of lambs were determined. In the research, 28 heads of 2-2.5 months old male lambs of Menemen genotype were fattened individually for 56 days with isonitrogenic and isocaloric concentrates containing 5 %, 10 % and 15 % tomato waste. The differences between the daily live weight gains, feed consumptions and feed efficiencies for the whole fattening period of 56 days were not found statistically significant (P;gt;0.01). As a result, it could be concluded that the live weight gains, feed consumptions and feed efficiencies of lambs are not effected significantly by the levels of tomato waste and the dried tomato waste could be added up to 15 % in lamb fattening concentrates.Bu çalışma, sütten kesilmiş kuzuların besi performansları üzerine karma yeme konan kurutulmuş domates posası düzeyinin etkilerini araştırmak amacıyla düzenlenmiştir. Üç farklı domates posası düzeyinin ele alındığı çalışmada, kuzuların canlı ağırlık artışları, yem tüketimleri ve yemden yararlanma yetenekleri dikkate alınmıştır. Araştırmada Menemen genotipi kuzulardan 2-2.5 aylık erkek 28 baş hayvan, % 5, % 10 ve % 15 düzeyinde domates posası içeren izonitrojenik ve izokalorik karma yemlerle 56 gün süreyle bireysel olarak besiye alınmıştır. Gruplar arasında 56 günlük deneme süresince saptanan günlük canlı ağırlık artışları, yem tüketimi ve yemden yararlanma önemsiz bulunmuştur (P>0.01). Farklı düzeylerde kurutulmuş domates posası içeren karma yemlerle besiye alınan kuzuların canlı ağırlık artışları, yem tüketimleri, yemden yararlanma güçlerinin önemli derecede değişmediği ve kuzu besi yemlerine % 15 düzeyine kadar kurutulmuş domates posası konabileceği sonucuna varılabilmektedir
